Sometimes life can give you lemons, atleast that’s what the humans say. Raauhl thought he’d been given a lemon (a sour Earth fruit) when he’d been temporarily assigned away from the Leviathan to assist the Trill medical program.

Being Trill himself he knew he had no right in rejecting the request but it didn’t make it any sweeter, however, meeting Octavia he was quickly reminded why he’d been requested.

He had dealt in the weird and wonderful as part of the RTF task force, he was a Trill and he’d also been a father in one form, in this life or the past. So for this job he was tactically perfect.

Ocatvia was a different kind of a Trill, she never wanted to be joined, she was far younger than most and she was possessed by… for lack of better words demon. Which in the eyes for the RTF ticked every box for Raauhl to make a home visit.

Sitting in the lounge of Hades Starbase all of this seemed like a distance memory, yet whilst he waited for Cobb he couldn’t help but think of his time away.

Commander Raauhl, XO (Incoming)

“Mr Raauhl,” came a familiar, rumbling voice, “missed your old captain too much, I see?”
His laughter was gregarious and heartfelt, as was the bear hug he now pulled the smaller Commander into. The passing months had changed Zachariah Cobb very little - his hair and beard were still long and unkempt, tunic still a little too tight around the waist. Only in his face, where anxious trenches had been gouged deep, could the terror from the Alini system still be seen.

Raauhl didn’t resist the hug, mostly because it caught him so off guard. Cobb was never the hugging time before he’d left he was just about to consider if his old timer CO was day drinking again when Cobb made his next move atleast showing him he hadn’t completely changed

“So, how have you been?” Zachariah fired questions whilst simultaneously producing whiskey and two glasses from an inner pocket and pouring two large measures. “And what in the seven hells has brought you back?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

“I have been well, it seems that the Trill Medical society have yet to learn that an executive officer has better things to do than to baby sit” he rolled his eyes, “And what brings me back is you, It seems the RTF wanted me to go from babysitting to Captain sitting.” The Trill let gave a chuckle and a playful wiggle of his eyebrows before pointing to the captains hands. “And it seems they were right, I should probably drink one to stop you drinking both.”

  • Commander Raauhl

“There’s plenty more in the reserves,” Zachariah handed a measure to Raauhl. “Although maybe I do need some sitting.”
Playfulness evaporated on a breath, tension rising like a swell from knotted stomach to terrified eyes. “I crossed the threshold, Ryder,” iron grip locked onto the younger man’s left arm. “At Alini. I saw what awaits us on the other side.”

Raauhl had several different thoughts at the sudden change in his Captain’s voice but in this instance decides not to question it. Cobb had always been eccentric but this was different, it was something he’d have to keep an eye out for.

But with a blink the moment was passed, the captain silent only while he gulped his own draught. “Made a change from babysitting anomalies, eh? Or maybe not so different after all. At any rate, Mr Raauhl, you and I have been reunited just in time. I hear we have ourselves a mission. And a mostly new crew!”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Thankful for the old Cobb to return, (that alone an odd thought) Raahul smiled, “Yes well nothing like keeping on the move. The RTF does like to keep us busy. Hopefully the crew, as new as it seems will eb up for the task. Though I very rarely think any of us can be in this job”

  • Commander Raauhl, XO

“Oh, there’s truth in that and no mistake,” Cobb exhaled. “Although having just met with some of our newcomers, I’ll give the top brass their due, they’ve built us an impressive team. They always do…”
So many had served on the Leviathan since its inception two years ago. Hampton, Kastil, Manhattan, Synthi-er. All brilliant. All memorable. All long gone, Cobb knew not where. Did he dare to hope for different, this time out? Or was this vessel’s tragic history doomed, always, to repeat.

“We have a long voyage ahead,” the captain drained then refilled his glass. “About two hundred lightyears between us and the Kessik system still. Of course, the ARU will expect us to complete that in a matter of days. By any means possible.”
Cerulean eyes locked onto Raauhl’s brown-flecked blue, searching for acknowledgement, for understanding of what was being proposed. By any means possible. The ARU had their methods and not all of them endorsed by the UFP.
