DiNozzo went to his office just to get away from everyone for a while. He had such a long day and a long shift and he needed to rest and he finally got that time to rest. SO he went to his office and started working on his stuff. He went ahead and went through everything for the tactical station and realizing that somethings could be different. He thinks that there are somethings that could be new for weapons and shields and thought it was best to go and talk to the captain about it.

CTO
<Snip>

“Yes Ensign how may I help you. Although I am not Security Chief I am Chief Tactical Chief. But how may I help you Ensign..” He said.

Chief Tactical Officer DiNozzo

“Oh, yes. Good evening, Sir.” Tom was a little surprised to see the CTO was here. “Equipment check, Sir. My training phaser has a response lag. I needed a clearance to get into the Armory and get someone to look at it. But maybe you can, Sir?” As a Junior Officer, he was supposed to know in and out of his gear. But he couldn’t compare to folks who live with this every day.

Ens Little, Eng

He looked shocked at the ensign and thought about it. He then looked back at him and said “A equipment check. Hmmm interesting. I can definitely help you get clearance to get into the Armory and I can definitely take a look at it ensign. But know this. I’ll be able to show you once.” He said.

CTO DiNozzo

“Thank you, Sir.” Tom handed him the phaser in the holster with a training use marking strap on it. “I think it’s probably mechanical fatigue here. I used this since the Academy so it’s been 5 years now.”

Ens Little, Eng

“Since the Academy? 5 years old now? Did you ever think of switching it to a Star-Fleet issued phaser from the ship? Cause it seems like some of the circuitry inside might have been fused apart.” He said. Wile looking at it.

CTO DiNozzo

“No, Sir. I mean yes Sir.” He hesitated for a few seconds and corrected his response. “Ship security wasn’t my assignment. But I kept the training, so If one day I need to use the real one, I will hit the target without hesitation.”

“Ensign,” as he sat there sighing “I am more then willing to help you out. But the thing is, why were you assigned to security. I mean its a good department. But why was it not your first choice?” He said. ” Look we need to get you a more issued phaser if you’re gonna be here. I can fix this one but if you’d like you can keep it, and use it on the holodeck.” He added.

“Well, at least I hope so. Maybe I need to see the issue phaser and get familiar with it too. Sir?” He then gave a thinking face toward that ‘toy gun.’

Little, Eng

“That sounds like a good idea. Let’s go to the Armory and I’ll be able to allow you to get a more issued phaser.” He said.

CTO DiNozzo

“Well, engineering wasn’t my choice at all, Sir.” He half laughed while remembering his first 3 choices before entering the Academy. “I’m just filling the gap. The seat was available so I hopped in.” The truth was, his medical record suggested he was unfit for direct action. But he was capable of supporting the boots on the ground as an engineer slash science bud. At least the institution sort of trained him to perform that. However, he has a lot to learn to implement his knowledge and training in reality.

“Yes, Sir. Thank you, Sir. And let’s go there too.” He was somewhat excited to see the inventory. He also hoped to see other officers there. At the time whoever was there was supposed to be having fun (training or inspection) with their shiny friends.

Little, Eng

He smiled at the ensign and said. “All you need to do kid is to follow you department heads orders. I’m just a department head of Tactical but I can help with anything you need. Come. Let’s go to the Armory.” He said to Ensign Little.

CTO DiNozzo

“Will keep that in mind, Sir.” Tom followed the path to the place he had trouble. The Armory guard didn’t say anything this time but nodded to the CTO and opened the hatches for them.

The Armory, as expected, crawled with phasers and users. The few and the proud crews sitting, chatting, and polishing gears. He was one of the few “not-really-combatant” guests and first-timer there.

Little, Eng

“Easy Ensign. I know how complicated. But if you need to I can help you with your phaser training. If needed. To be honest ensign, if I may, the guests and first-timers don’t really uh you know not really combatant to much people. So I apologize. So like I said, good luck. And here’s your starfleet issued phaser.” He said.

CTO DiNozzo

“Sure thing, Sir.” Tom lifted his “new friend” and said, “This is heavier than I thought. Are you training with this all the time?”

“Need help gentlemens?” An NWO (N Weapons Officer) walked up to them and asked. He was behind the counter with a PADD. Possibly he was checking his next schedule.

Little, Eng

“I’m just helping him get a new phaser for him. So that way he doesn’t need his training phaser.” He said to the weapons officer.

CTO DiNozzo

“You’re still using the training phaser?” The NWO turned to Little, “You aren’t a security personnel, are you?”

NWO

“Well guessed.” He said, “I was fortunate never had to use it. But as this gentleman suggested, I may need to get as real as possible.”

Little, Eng

“Easy Ensign. I may be a gentleman but he isn’t wrong. Although Ensign I am a Lieutenant. But the ensign isn’t wrong. I mean think about it you never know if we would get boarded on here or not. So that’s why I suggested he’d get a real phaser just to be on the safe side.” He said.

CTO DiNozzo

“Of course, Sir.” Tom turned to the Lieutenant. “I wouldn’t get access here without your help. Much appreciated, Sir.”

“So, do you still need that training phaser?”

“Yes. Well, it’s a kind of my buddy since the Academy so, I’d like to keep it. I originally was going to ask if you guys can fix that for me.”

“We do know how. But strange, aren’t you an engineer who can do that yourself?” The NWO smirked while sizing the Ensign from top to bottom, uniformly.

“Correct. But obviously, you guys know better. Can’t compete with the crews who live with that.” He smirked back. “Besides, you have a much better replicator right? For parts?”

Little, Eng

“I might. If you can just leave that phaser here. I’ll see what I can do. Lieutenant?” The NWO turned to him.

NWO

“Oh yes.’ DiNozzo hands the NWO the training phaser and smiles. “I feel like it’s best if he has one of the phaser we have. It’s more up-to-date and more issued than a training phaser. Just letting you know.” He said.

CTO DiNozzo

-bump-

“No problem, Sir.” The NWO smiled, walked to the counter, put the Little phaser in a box, and tagged a ‘broken’ sign. He then walked to the officers and said, “Well, actually there’s a holo deck available now. Well, it’s sort of someone just canceled the reservation. Would you gentlemens like to go in? To test a real phaser?” He looked at the Lieutenant and then smiled at Ensign’s holster.

NWO

“I’m fine with that. Let’s do it. Ensign we’re gonna test out your ability with a star-fleet-issued phaser. NWO, I’m gonna give him different types of simulations so he knows what to do.” He said. Not knowing what the ensigns abilities are.

CTO

-bump-

“Your reservation is confirmed.” The NWO left a smile and took a PADD, “Take it easy Ensign, the objective is to test your phaser. But you do remember the safety rules, right?”

NWO

”… Such as never pointing a phaser toward your fellow officer? I won’t.” Tom assured the NWO and put a hand on his holster. “I might not be familiar with your training scenarios, but I’ll do as trained to, Sir.” He said that to the CTO.

Little, Eng

“Alright. Follow me ensign.”

CTO

“Aye, Sir.” Tom followed the CTO while the NWO somehow left him with a good luck gesture.

Little, Eng

DiNozzo then set up something kn the holodeck and then made a scenario. “Alright this scenario is one where you’re on a starship. And Klingons are boarding your ship and they have captured the engine room. It is your job to stop them. Understood?” He said.

CTO

“My ship? Sir?” Tom replied with a surprised face, “Where are the securities? Are they on the scene?”

Little, Eng

“Look around. There are holo projected security teams.” The CTO said.

Tom gave a phew face and said, “Phaser in stun, ready, Sir.”

Little, Eng

“Alright. I’ll be on the other side of the room. Computer start program.” He said to the computer.

CTO

As the words echoed in the room, the grids turned to a simulated environment. Where a ship was on Red Alert status, meaning red stripes, red beeps, and red-shirted crews everywhere stumbling around. Tom was ready, but who knows if the phaser was the same.

That’s the only way to find out. He thought. Unlike peacetime repairs, the alert status told him this wasn’t a drill, ironically. The scenario already stated the objective is to stop the Klingons. But that’s only possible if crews could figure out some kind of measures. The scenario reminded him a Klingon number one, who only cared about his honor and career.

As his thought process had interrupted by a deck shake, he went to the engine room with a few red-shirted crews.

Little, Eng

As the Chief Tactical Officer was standing on the other side of the holodeck wall, he can see that the ensign is having a hard time trying to figure things out with the fact that he didn’t know if it was a his actual phaser or not. He pressed the intercom.

“Mr. Little, the phaser in your hand is the one we got out of the weapons storage. So don’t worry.” He said to the ensign.

CTO

=^= Aye, Chief Tactical Officer. =^= Tom barely reached the comm with a little bit of shaky hand. The words from him were supposed to comfort the Ensign in yellow. But his heartbeat stopped for a second. Then he stared at his newly issued phaser and thought Oh my, I hope I won’t damage the deck. The weight of this toy was a little surprising to him. But it actually stabled the grip and potentially the aiming too.

As they approached a section a few blocks from the destination, two, no three invaders with armor approached the crews. One had a disruptor rifle, other had a spear, another had a… Pain stick?
