Streaks of light shot past the view port as Than watched idly from his seat in the lounge of the Broadsword. His face reflected in the window looked expressionless, the dark spots flowing down each side of his head unmoving like his eyes. Beside him he was aware of another presence, the man not unfamiliar yet almost unknown to him though a personal friend of the Captain of the ship he had left not two weeks before.

Almost at the same moment that Than remembered to breathe, the light slowed to individual specks of light and the sound of a Starship travelling at warp speed changed to the dull hum, almost silence by comparison to an engineer, of the ship holding position where it had dropped to normal space. Now, aside from the lights the dull shape of another ship filled the view port.

“Ready?” The voice of the man beside him asked. “They’ll be expecting you, although on the graveyard shift you’ll probably have to spend the night in the lounge there before getting access to quarters.”

He glanced to his side and noted the man beside him, thick dark hair and calm grey green eyes had his lips twisted into a grin as he teased him. Looking back to the ship outside the window he took a moment before looking back at the man to reply. “At least their lounge might have some decent food and something worth drinking, Sir.”

That brought a laugh from the other man who turned to look out the window as well, bringing the four Captains pips into view on his collar as he shifted his body. Mason Black had only recently taken over command of the Broadsword after his previous posting, but he wasn’t proud enough to consider himself apart from people of a lower rank than he was. Especially not people he had met and drank with casually in an earlier life. “If they do, let me know and I’ll make sure Captain Knight gets to hear that the Saracen lounge serves watered down swill.” Throwing Than a wink he pushed himself to his feet. “Come on Lieutenant, I’ll walk you to the transporter. Everything is cleared and ready, all you gotta do is get torn apart and put back together on that ship over there.”

“Thanks for giving me a ride Captain,” the Trill came to his feet and picked up the gear bag that was leaning against another chair near him. “I know Captain Knight asked a favor to get me here quicker, but thank you.”

“Don’t mention it, we were going this way anyway and I know you were happy seeing your old ship again, even if she has got a new coat of paint and had some upgrades since you were last here.” Pausing to finish the drink that Mason had ordered earlier, he slid the empty glass back onto the table and turned to lead the Engineer to the nearest transporter room.

--------------------------- a few moments later ----------------------------

“Good luck, Lieutenant Osedi,” Mason raised a hand briefly in farewell. “And congratulations on your posting, its’ been a time coming.” Giving a head tilt forward to indicate to the Transporter Officer to begin, Mason smirked. “Go ahead and tear him apart, Chief.”

Than opened his mouth to reply with something witty and caustic in farewell, but too quickly his world faded to white.

Then his vision faded back in another transporter room, but one of a clearly different design and different face looking at him. “Hi.” Was the only thing Than managed to say to keep from looking too awkward, then tilted his own head to click his neck, making sure that everything seemed to be where it was supposed to be.

“Welcome to the Leviathan,” the transporter officer replied. “You travel light?”

Looking down, he noted the simple gear bag in his hand and shrugged. “Keep it simple, less to carry that way right?” Than smiled and stepped down off the pad, dropping the bag to his feet and adjusting his cuffs. “I know its’ late,” the smile turned into a smirk, “but is your lounge still open?” Taking a small chit out of his pocket, he offered it to the Transporter Officer, a standard issue transfer authorization chit was in his fingers, confirming he was who he was supposed to be and was supposed to be here.

An extremely tall Kelpien male said in a neutral tone, “It’s never too late. The lounge is always open. We have to keep things going around there 24/7…in terms of Standard Earth days and hours.” He took the device and scanned it, “Ah…you are our new Engineer! Welcome, Lieutenant Osedi. Glad to have you aboard the Leviathan. Your quarters are located on Deck three. It is a stateroom with a nice-sized living area with a workstation as well as a separate bathroom and bedroom. Your office is located on Deck Eighteen. I take it you are already aware of the boarding procedures?”

Transporter NE

“Do you mean aside from the standard medical check-in and reporting to the Executive Officer to get assigned the correct access and security clearances, as well as a comm-badge for this ship?” The statement was slightly turned into a question at the end, inviting the Kelpien to step in with anything he had forgotten. “I’m pretty sure I have it covered, although maybe the excitement of my own bathroom might have made me forget something. Does this ship have anything else I need to do?” Lifting his bag, he slung it over his shoulder but made no move to walk out the door yet.

The Kelpian lifted his chin and placed his hands behind his back. “Those are the ones. I apologize, sir. I hope my tone was not…rude. In any case, I also hope I have not offended you. Most of the time people come aboard this ship and behave like they know what they are supposed to do but they don’t. Then they say, “Well the Transporter Operation didn’t say anything about that.” It is annoying as I once heard a human woman say. I also find it more irritating when the proper procedures are not followed.”

Transporter NE

“Procedures are there for a reason,” Than shrugged slightly. “No need to apologize, no offence was taken and I didn’t take any tone as rude, just being helpful, thank you. I’d hate to come on board thinking I knew what I was doing and the ship has something specific that I have to do that I missed when skimming the protocol guide for the Leviathan.”

“So, Deck Three is it? Looks like I’ll have time to stow my kit and freshen up, even grab a bite to eat in the lounge and a little sleep before I get into reporting for duty. Thanks again Chief!” Throwing a casual salute the Transporter Officers way, he turned for the door to head to his quarters but paused and looked back. “What’s good in the lounge? The ship have anything special that people prefer?”

Lt Osedi, CE

The Transporter NE raised his eyebrows a bit, a surprised reaction to the CE asking his opinion on the food that was good in the lounge. No one ever asked him about this before. There was what appeared to be a slight smile as he began speaking, “Oh…um..let’s see. I particularly enjoy the salted kelp soup, as well as the kelp and flower fruit cakes.” He thought for a moment, “Outside of Kelpian foods, I have enjoyed the tofu bites as well as the Terran vegetable soup, with a slice of plain white bread. I think the most popular entrees are the bacon, steak and fried chicken. The humans seem to love those. If you are ever in need of a lunch companion I’d be happy to join you.”

Transporter NE

“I’d look forward to that, what should I call you though?” Than asked the Officer. “There are some turkish foods using falafel that you might like. I’m pretty partial to a Falafel kebab myself, or vegetable wraps in the Bajoran style with some hot sauce.”
