<Snip is standby steady>

The last of Dayner’s belonging had just arrived in his newly assigned quarters. He hadn’t had much of a look, he walked into each part of his new accommodation and briefly glanced around, the same way that someone might quickly inspect a Hotel Room they where staying in before they headed out again.
He stood in the center of his new room and stared at the pile of boxes and bags that his belongings where in. He sighed. Unpacking always felt like a chore. albeit an unavoidable one. It didn’t bother him though, he had predetermined before his arrival aboard the Leviathan that he go and perform the usual on-boarding routines first.
This was primarily because he wasn’t as well read about his new posting as he would like to have been. It was hard to read up anything about the Leviathan or it’s missions because most of the information was classified or redacted. This only added to his excitement and intrigue.

He strode out of his quarters and made his way along the corridors to the nearest Turbolift and stepped inside. “Deck 18” He said and the lift whirred into life.
‘I’ll call by the Chief Engineer’s Office first see if they are around, if not I call by Main Engineering next.’ He thought to himself as the lift made it’s way though the ship.
Eventually the lift came to a halt and Dayner stepped out. He walked along the corridor until he found the door marked Chief Engineer’s Office. He pressed the chime and waited to see if anyone was in.

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

As he pressed the chime, Iphigenia walked up behind him. “Welcome to the Leviathan Lieutenant Ruuk.” She said as she placed both hands behind her back. “I see we both had the same idea and are here to see the Chief Engineer.” She looked around him at the door, “Although I am sure you have a much better reason to be here than I do. I just wanted to see if he was free for lunch. I guess you are here to check in with him?” She paused then said, “After your check-in, you should join us for lunch.”

Ruuk turned and was somewhat surprised to find the Captain standing behind him. “Ah Captain, Thank you” He said to her Welcome. “Lunch would be wonderful, Thank you Ma’am”. Not only would lunch be a fantastic opportunity for Ruuk to eat for the first time in what felt like an age (but in reality had he eaten Breakfast that morning.) it would also be a great chance to learn more about his fellow officers.

Henao, CO

“Of course. I am glad I caught you here. Just so you know we have a wonderful spot here on the ship to dine. What do you like to eat?” She asked.

“I am open to most cuisines” Ruuk smiled, “and I’m certainly not opposed to trying new things.”

“Very good. In that case, you will have to try the Hlaka soup paired withe the Darvot fritters and we can have Laurelian pudding for desert.”

“Oh?” Meylan was carrying a briefcase with a surprise to see 2 officers standing near the hatch of the CE’s office. “Good day to both of you, I’m Lieutenant James Meylan, and I’ll be assisting with some desk works for the Chief Engineer. And he’s not here.” He then turned to the panel near the hatch and said =M=Computer, open.=M=

=C=Identification?=C=

=M=Lietenant James Meylan, Engineer, 2057.=M=

=C=Confirm.=C= Usually, the office was locked unless the CE was inside. A few designated ranks could enter in case of an emergency. The room was the place not only allowed some privacy for the Chief but also monitors to evaluate the ship’s health should they desire.

“Come in,” He waved to Ruuk after it opened. “And Captain, would you like to join us?” He thought Iphigenia would be curious about this possibly-mysterious and secret sight to the engineering department.

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

When Lieutenant Meylan arrived, Iphigenia presented a smile. “Well if it isn’t our assistant CE. Your timing is impeccable as always. I take it that Mr. Osedi has not arrived from his leave yet?” she asked Lieutenant Meyland

“The chief is taking a sick leave after a long hour duty shift, Sir.” Meylan let them in while accompanying the two precious senior officers. “We had a routine check performed and he didn’t feel well after that. I hope he’d be fine tomorrow.” Meylan recalled.

She turned to Ruuk to explain, “Our CE had to take a leave of absence. We are fortunate to have Lieutenant Meyland fill in for him until he returns. Not every starship is so lucky to have a CE and an Assistant CE.”

“Thank you” Ruuk said kindly as he gestured his hand to the door, inviting the Captain to enter before he did. Ruuk had been carefully reading up about manners and customs recently and saw this as good time to test his perception of them out. His interest as to the contents of the engineering office was well and truly piqued.

Meylan smiled. He was probably getting used to being called Master Chief so long that, he couldn’t believe he would have a chance to be a member of the officer’s club.

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

“If you would not mind, I would like to join you,” she said as she entered the office after Ruuk gestured.

Henao, CO

“By all means, you are the Captain after all.” Ruuk said as he followed the Captain into the Office.

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

As Iphigenia walked into the office she observed the various consoles. She wasn’t sure why but she have always had a fascination with engineering although when it came to the discipline she never knew what she was doing. “I don’t know if you know, Lieutenant Ruuk, Lieutenant Meyland was the one who chose your application for the Containment Architect role. You were one of many and I had no idea what to look for.”

Henao, CO

“Then I have you to thank” Ruuk smiled at the CE.

“Oh, never mind, Sir. I’m glad you found one.” He said that while bringing an additional chair in front of the guests. “I was trained to take care of the cores. We had a containment specialist before. He was taking both as the architect and the Chief Engineer. Oh, Have a seat and make yourself home!” He gestured to both of them. “Would you like something? Oh, let me remind you. Anything you ordered here tastes a little bit, you know, uniquely.” He smiled. Engineering decks were proud of having replicators that specialized for parts. Most machine repairs could be done here without the need to resupply from starbases. But because of that, those appetizers formed from the magical synthesizers somehow tasted oily and ion-ly; Those were spinach-blended, splendidly sparkling experiences.

“Nothing for me, thank you.” Ruuk said as he took a seat.

“I guess we can have something later at the mess hall.” Meylan replied.

The office was probably far from saying, cozy. It was more like a museum of machines. A few pictures hanging on the wall showed the ship and its skeleton. Below them had a display table not for jewelry but for warp and impulse engine plastic models. And let’s not forget 1/200 sized ship model stated ‘SS Leviathan’ on the right side. The desk, piled with a screen and console, potentially for monitoring the ship’s health. The status showing was not so different from the table in Main Engineering, except here was more like a simplified, summary status. Another desk, however, was a bunk. The below was piled with PAADs; The previous encounters related to creatures and some empty frascos left by the previous CE.

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

“I’m keen to learn more about my assignment here on the Leviathan. I’ve done my best to read as much as I can into the ship and it’s missions. But as you will know, information on the ARU is… difficult to ascertain.” Dayner said in reference to the fact that all of the Documents he could find with information about the ARU or the Leviathan was heavily redacted. This meant that Dayner wasn’t quiet as prepared for this posting as he would like to be. But he knew in time that all he needed to know would be revealed.

“Consider that as Levi’s way of welcome.” The assisting CE smirked and said about the not-so-colorful document that everyone received on board this ship. “I will register your information now so you can access computer logs and that desk,” He pointed to the desk with a bunk. “will be yours. There’s only one bed here. On this ship, the CA is used to taking CE’s role. With Captain’s permission, I could add your access to this office, just in case.”

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

Iphigenia looked at Meylan as she said, “Well…your job may very well be one of the most dangerous jobs here on the ship. The last CA was…well never mind about that. Why don’t I give you a rundown of your duties?” She sat in a nearby chair and continued, “As you know we deal with events or phenomena that are beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding. As humans and other beings have started to explore the vastness of space we have naturally encountered beings and species that have abilities that we once thought were…uh..paranormal in nature.” She looked at Meylan again, then she continued, “Your job will include creating the algorithm codes in the Leviathan’s computer to contain these anomalies when they do board the ship, in addition, there is a specific area on the ship we have set up to keep them contained until we can hand them off to a secure location. You will manage this area. We must always ensure that these anomalies do not escape for if they do, they can wreak havoc on the ship. Some of them are dangerous, and some of them are harmless but have the ability to alter the mind of the crew and manipulate us into doing…stupid things. After we are done here, I will give you a tour of the area and let you see them first hand. Finally during missions, as we encounter these anomalies you will develop the best strategy, working with our CTO and Security to ensure that we capture and continue these beings.”

Henao, CO

Meylan took a seat after both officers sat. He carefully listened to the job description and operating procedures the CO stated with hands crossed, and elbows on the desk. He respectfully confirmed and said, “Understood, Sir. We have Ensign Little specialized in computer-related issues. I will notify him and see how he can implement his expertise in dealing with future unknown threats. We might run a drill when our new CA is ready!” He smiled at Ruuk and turned to the skipper. “If I may add to what you’ve just briefed, now the Engineering team has 3 things to do: Lieutenant Than Osedi and I are mainly for warp core and impulse engines, Ensign Tom Little is responsible for computer cores, and Lieutenant… Dayner Ruuk is here to contain the anomalies while working with other teams. We need to integrate specialties and rehearse to meet the intent of securing the ship’s mobilization and the dangerous anomalies.” He turned to Ruuk, “The latest anomaly was on the USS Celeste. You can access what happened after your registration is complete. From that desk.” He pointed to that bunk desk again. “You can also ask me if the document is redacted or complicated to understand.”

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

“A drill would be very welcomed” Ruuk said. His actual contact with Anomalies was very limited. “I find any opportunity to learn in a practical a rewarding one.”

He turned a moment and looked at the Desk. It was functional work space which would suit him nicely. He didn’t bother with personal effects in his work spaces, that was something he reserved from his Quarters. He was quite a fastidious person, especially when it came to the cleanliness of his work station.

“It seems like I have a steep learning curve ahead of me” He continued. “But rest assured I will work tirelessly to get up to speed.” He said to both Meylan and the CO. He was determined to make a success of his time in this role - both from a personal pride point of view, and the fact that the safety of the Ship and it’s Crew would depend on it.

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

“A task you will succeed at no doubt. She said to Dayner, ” Ensign LIttle will be your contact for the computer training related to your position. He is very patient and I think you will find him quite easy to work with. Lieutenant Osedi, will be your commanding officer when he is not available Lieutenant Meyland will fill in for him. Lieutenant Osedi will not bother you much and so long as you prove competent at your job he will rely on your expertise.” She stood as she said, “I think I have stayed long enough. I will leave you two to get better acquainted.”

Henao, CO

At that precise moment, the door to the office opened and the Chief Engineer was revealed standing on the other side, pausing in slight surprise at the sight of three people in the office. One hand that was half raised to his lips held a very large, oversized cup of coffee that smelt like it could also be used as an industrial degreaser or perhaps a poltergeist solvent if the need arose, and Than took a sip of this drink before tilting his head slightly looking at them. “Are we having a party?” His voice asked casually, “I must have missed the memo, I would have brought cake.”

Lt Osedi, CE

“There he is,” Iphigenia said with a smile. She placed her arm around the man’s shoulders as he entered the room. “This is the mysterious Osedi. He roams the ship and we might not see him for days.” she teased him. “No party. We are onboarding the new containment architech. Discussing training and trying not to scare him away during his first few weeks on the ship.”

“Ah, speaking of a cake!”Meylan stood from the chair and yielded to the CE. “I might recommend one from the engineering recipe. Probably no one tried that before, though.” He implied the delicacy of parts
-use-only replicators.

“Is there a reason no one has tried the recipe?” Iphigenia asked suspiciously with squinted eyes as she placed both hands on her hips.

“It’s a little bit greasy.” Meylan whispered to the dubious listener, “This was part of the dept’s culture. Engineers tend to get their hands dirty, so we eat this without using utensils. Usually, this is for an annual celebration. To remember who we are and what we do. And a wish for another year’s safe voyage. But… It was banned for years because it’s way above the fleet’s new standard of sugar intake. And the way we eat this is so-called, so unhealthy.” He shook his head after he explained.

“May Introduce our new Containment Architect, Lieutenant Ruuk.” He then turned to him, “This is the man in charge, Lieutenant and Chief Engineer Osedi.” His tone was somehow excited.

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

Ruuk stood up and extended his hand to the Chief Engineer. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant Osedi. The Captain and Lieutenant Meylan speak very highly of you.” He said warmly.

“I actually was just headed out. I wanted to come and welcome Lieutenant Ruuk aboard, give him a quick debrief.” She looked at Osedi and said, “You are the only one on the ship with an assistant and a specialist. I must admit I am a little jealous myself.”

Henao, CO

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

“Thank you, Captain. I appreciate it.” He said in response to the Captain wishing you welcome him aboard.

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

“You are welcome to visit us sometimes, Captain. A crash course for non-engineer crew might help you understand what we do.” Meylan smiled. He was aware that the CO is a fast learner and came from a business family. Although, he was puzzled by the motive that she joined the fleet while owning an industry already.

She gave Meylan a look that could only be interpreted as No Thank You. Last time she attempted to blend in with the engineering crew she almost lost her hand. It would have been a shame if she had. Iphigenia was proud of her hands they were small, smooth and always well manicured. The unfortunate incident in engineering had left her with a crushed hand and several broken nails. Since then she’d decided to leave engineering to the Engineers.
She nodded at all three men then exited the room.

He then said to the CA, “I’m curious, what’s your background? Have you encountered weird creatures before? How did you deal with it? Oh, one question at a time.”
