Echo looked at himself in the mirror. His dirty-blonde hair tied up in a loose and messy ponytail. His daily ritual of staring into his reflection has so far come up with no information on who he was–or why he was here. The only thing he knew is that he was glad to be here.

After snapping himself out of his mind, he grabbed the outer shirt of his uniform and tossed it on, bringing his appearance to rights as he slipped out of the door of his quarters into the bustling corridor. ‘Bustling’ was the exact opposite of what the corridor actually was, which was quite quiet, something that continuously got on Echo’s nerves, even in the academy. Everything was always so quiet.

He stepped into the lift, which was also quiet. “Bridge.” He said, glad to break up the monotony and quiet. He muttered to himself that he really needed to convince the CO to play some light music through the ship. As he thought about this, the lift slowed to a stop, and he stepped out onto the bridge, glad the noise was present. He walked over to the ready room, ringing the chime.

Inside the ready room, Captain Zachariah Cobb was engaged in matters of extreme importance. He was eating breakfast. Finding his own quarters too sterile and far too quiet, he had developed a habit of arriving for his shift a good couple of hours before his assigned time and, with the overnight duty officer still watching the bridge, retreating to his ready room with a large raktajino, a stream of the days news from Terran and an oversized plate of eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, tomatoes and hot, buttered toast.

As the door chime sounded, he had just placed a huge forkful of bacon into his mouth, so lingered a few moments longer than would be deemed polite before answering with a swallow, “Come in!”

As Echo stepped into the room, he stopped. “Am I interrupting something, sir? If so I can come back later.” He said, gesturing to the door that just closed behind him.

“Nuh-uh,” Cobb shook his head as he continued to chew through another mouthful of eggs. “Pull up a chair, help yourself to coffee, or replicate yourself a plate of breakfast too if you’re hungry. Then tell me what I can do for you at such an early hour?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Echo blinked a bit, before walking over to the replicator and replicating up some toast. After it appeared, he awkwardly pulled up a chair to the other side of the desk. “Ensign Echo reporting for duty.”

Ens Echo

That caught the old man’s attention and he immediately laid down his fork, raising his head and studying his visitor closely for the first time.
“You didn’t board at the station? I suppose we did leave in a bit of a hurry, so I apologise if making your way to us turned out to be an unexpected challenge.”

Leaning back in his chair and taking a long gulp of his coffee, Cobb continued to visually assess the other. There was something about this young man that was…unsettling. Perhaps it was the messy hair, or the expression on the other’s face, as if he were not entirely sure who Cobb was and why he was here.

“Well then,” Zachariah smiled in an attempt to put Echo at ease, “I suppose you’d better tell me a bit about yourself, academy record, past missions, why the hell you’d accept a position on this bloody ship?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

“Academy record, nearly perfect, except for the psychological evaluation…as the Vulcan put it, ‘there’s nothing to evaluate’.” Echo began, darting his eyes around the room and not making eye contact. “Past missions, none. As for accepting the posting, not like there’s anything else for me.”

Cobb frowned, then pushed aside his plate to gain access to his terminal. As he pulled up the file and began to read, the frown only deepened further.

“So, you really don’t remember anything, huh?” he asked, equal parts sympathetic towards, and at the same time, intrigued by, this young man. “You had no personal effects with you? No trinkets?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

“Just what clothes I was wearing. I don’t remember anything to know what stuff was mine–if anything.” Echo said, sadly. After a moment of looking down at his plate, he spoke in his defense.

“That doesn’t make me any less of a person or a Starfleet officer!” He raised his voice, adamant.

Ens Echo

“No, it bloody well does not!” Cobb agreed, giving voice to an immediate surge of protectiveness towards the young man. “And I would never attempt to suggest otherwise. Look,” his eyes caught Echo’s own, his sincerity almost overwhelming in its intensity, “I’ve seen your scores, I know what you’re capable of. And I’m damn lucky to have such a skilled officer on my team.”

Closing down his terminal, he reached for his coffee and allowed the Ensign a moment of silence to absorb his words before adding, “And if the ARU, with all the vast resources at their disposal, have failed to dig up anything troublesome from this lost past of yours, then I don’t intend to waste time forming suspicions of my own. I take people as I find them. And until you offer me a reason to do otherwise, then I will be happy to welcome you to this ship and to this crew.”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

After a few moments, Echo calmed down, especially at his words of praise. “Thank you sir. I’m not going to let you down. I’m a dedicated officer, ready to do my job, and if the keys to my past are out there, cool. If not, then oh well, I’m making new friends, and finding new things.”

Ens Echo

“Well if the keys to your past are out there,” Cobb added, “then perhaps I can help you look for them?”

The Captain sat back and ran a hand along his beard.
“So, how much do you know about all of this anomaly business then? Ah…present company excluded,” he chuckled.

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

“Not a whole lot. All I know is that we’re hunting them. If that’s a good term for it.” Echo said, quietly.
