“Just what clothes I was wearing. I don’t remember anything to know what stuff was mine–if anything.” Echo said, sadly. After a moment of looking down at his plate, he spoke in his defense.

“That doesn’t make me any less of a person or a Starfleet officer!” He raised his voice, adamant.

“No, it bloody well does not!” Cobb agreed, giving voice to an immediate surge of protectiveness towards the young man. “And I would never attempt to suggest otherwise. Look,” his eyes caught Echo’s own, his sincerity almost overwhelming in its intensity, “I’ve seen your scores, I know what you’re capable of. And I’m damn lucky to have such a skilled officer on my team.”

Closing down his terminal, he reached for his coffee and allowed the Ensign a moment of silence to absorb his words before adding, “And if the ARU, with all the vast resources at their disposal, have failed to dig up anything troublesome from this lost past of yours, then I don’t intend to waste time forming suspicions of my own. I take people as I find them. And until you offer me a reason to do otherwise, then I will be happy to welcome you to this ship and to this crew.”

After a few moments, Echo calmed down, especially at his words of praise. “Thank you sir. I’m not going to let you down. I’m a dedicated officer, ready to do my job, and if the keys to my past are out there, cool. If not, then oh well, I’m making new friends, and finding new things.”

Ens Echo

“Well if the keys to your past are out there,” Cobb added, “then perhaps I can help you look for them?”

The Captain sat back and ran a hand along his beard.
“So, how much do you know about all of this anomaly business then? Ah…present company excluded,” he chuckled.

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

“Not a whole lot. All I know is that we’re hunting them. If that’s a good term for it.” Echo said, quietly.

Ens Echo

Cobb chuckled. “Well then, you know about as much as I do.” Reaching into his desk, he rummaged for a few moments then pulled out a Padd and handed it to Echo. “Here, this has all of the history of the ARU and the RTF. It’s about all I can give you for now until I’ve got word of your clearance levels but…it’s been invaluable to me over the past few days.”

He leaned forward and dropped his voice to an almost conspiratorial whisper. “These RTF folks, they’re…well, they can be somewhat unnerving at first. But from what I hear they know their stuff and they’ll get the job done when the time comes. As for you, I’d imagine you’ll have your hands more than full in the science department. There is a lot of work underway to wring every last useful detail we can out of some barely-tangible information from ARU Command. I’m sure you’ll be able to make yourself useful.”

“So,” the Captain cleared the last morsel of food from his plate with a regretful expression, “I’ve asked a lot from you. Do you have anything you want to ask me? About the ship? Or the crew? Or even yours truly? Within reason, of course.” he added, laughing.

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

“I probably already know the answer to this, all things considered, but maybe you have information I don’t. What do you know of a thing called Project Geneva, probably from the late 21st century.” Echo asked. He’d seen the words on the few recovered terminals from the explorer he was found in, but knew little to nothing about it.

Ens Echo

“Project Geneva?” Zachariah sat back and ran a hand through his hair. “I remember studying it back in school as a wee lad. A multi-generational colony ship, right?” He searched his memory for any more potent details that could possibly relate to the young man sitting in front of him. But came up only with blanks.

“The ship was destroyed, if I recall correctly? No survivors.”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Echo blinked at him on the last statement. “Then I’m a ghost. That was probably a story fabricated at a later date, I’m not sure.”

Ens Echo

The old man blinked and rubbed at the back of his neck. “I…don’t follow. What could Geneva mean to you other than a school history project? Did you have ancestors on there?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

“I know limited details, but I remember seeing the words ‘project geneva’ on the explorer I was found on.” Echo said, shrugging, “I was curious what the records claimed happened.”

Ens Echo

Cobb frowned. “But if what you suggest is true, that would make you…” he attempted to sum the years quickly in his head, shrugged, gave up, “…centuries old? And yet I’m told you passed every test at the Academy with distinctions? How…is that possible? Where have you been in those intervening years to amass such knowledge?”

Suddenly nothing made sense and the captain was beginning to feel as one in the middle of a lake with their boat midway to capsizing.

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Echo shrugged. “You know as much as I do. My best guess is we hit some sort of temporal anomaly while drifting. That wouldn’t explain my seemingly-permanent memory loss of everything pre-awakening, nor how I know so much. To be fair, Starfleet was, and is, just as surprised as I am.”
