Ryder acknowledged the salute with a nod and whilst smiling, “At ease Crewman.” He waved his hand dismissively, he had forgotten that it had taken him months to train his previous crew not to act so formally around him unless he was with someone of equivalent rank or higher. Looks like he would have to start again. “No need to salute me in future Crewman unless I’m accompanied with the Captain, and by all mean return you cap to its previous position. There’s no need for you to feel uncomfortable both physically and mentally around me.” He waited a moment allowing her the moment to dress herself down if she so desired.

Jessie dropped her salute and swiftly turned her cap backwards once again, tucking the cane rolls back out of her eyes. Giving her coveralls a quick tug, she attempted to make herself for comfortable and presentable. “Aye sir!”

“Whats your name Crewman? How do you prefer to be addressed?” The question was simple enough, Ryder often preferred his given name or Commander if extremely necessary and to other Trill, they likely would call him Raauhl.

  • Commander Ryder, XO

“My name sir? Jessie Polizzi. Friends call me Jess,” she responded showing her crooked Klingon teeth. The crewman wondered why the XO of the ship had bothered stopping and talking to a lowly crewman who’s main job was cleaning faeces out of cages. Without thinking, she raised her arm and took a whiff of her arm pit. Not good. Next order of business was a shower. Honestly, Klingon latrines had a better odour.

Polizzi, Crewman

Very few things surprised Ryder these days especially on this shop but seeing the young quarter Klingon snif herself did cause him to stifle a laugh expertly. “Well Jess, if you don’t mind. How are you finding the transition to the RTF? I’m still trying to get to know everyone did you join the ship under its new job role or was you a part of the original crew?” Ryder had urge to check to make sure if he spelled too, but then stopped himself.

  • Commander Ryder, XO

“Just recently joined sir. Been on a couple of ships and starbases after finishing training. Wasn’t smart enough for the Academy, sir,” Jess said as she shifted her weight to the other foot. In her 6 years in Starfleet she did not recall ever speaking to the second in command or captain. Crewman were barely noticed by many unless they happened to work directly together. Her dark brown eyes watched him intently wondering where he was going with the questions. Did he know about the secret “E” club the other crewmen were running on the enlisted deck? “Joining the RTF gets me extra credits towards my degree in genetics with ecology and evolution. Seemed a good fit too. Since we are look for the unknown lifeforms and such. Might not be smart enough for the Academy, but not as dumb as I look. Sir.”

Jess, Science

Hearing her interest in Ecology Ryder smiled, “That’s quite the ambition. I’m not sure if you know much about me, I’d be rude to assume everyone knew everything about the ships XO but before being an XO I was a scientist and with that majored in Botany and Ecology at the Trill Science Academy. Its a very good field to get into, feel free to use me as a tutor if you so desired to, though I am sure the Chief Science Officer and the other scientist onboard are already doing everything they can to help. ” He paused thinking for a moment, “When you are ready to submit your papers send them to me, or if you have anything now do so anyway. If I’m impressed with what I see then maybe we can see about sponsoring you for a place here on the ship with a commission, providing you meet the requirements but so far you have the right head for it, and you’re clearly ambitious enough. Never tell yourself you’re not smart enough, it most certainly is never the case.”

  • Commander Raauhl, XO

“Thank you Sir. I will keep that in mind. I appreciate the offer for help,” Jessie said leaning heavily on the broom and pushing her hat back from her eyes. She had heard scuttlebutt around the ship, but was not sure of its accuracy. On slightly aware her next question was a bit inappropriate, she chewed on her bottom lip thinking if she should ask or not. Raauhl had seemed eager to help her out and answer questions. Eyeballing him slowly up and down, she finally asked, “Can I ask you a personal question, sir?”

Polizzi, Science

Intrigued by the sudden question he nodded with a smile, “Sure shoot. You’ve earnt at least one” He teased wondering just what she might want to know that she would consider personal and interesting enough that she required and answer for it.

  • Commander Raauhl, XO

Stretching her neck and spine to make herself appear even taller, she looked the Commander square in the eyes, “Scuttlebutt has it....mind you, I ain’t one for spreading it....but talk is, you have a way with the ladies. If you know what I mean. You are alright looking. Guess you could handle yourself alright in a fight. And you are kinda a smooth talker. I am all that too, but I don’t seem to have much luck.”

Polizzi, Science

Raauhl was certainly not expecting that sort of question and had to stop himself from pulling a smile, it eas clear that Polizzi was serious and the last thing he wanted to do was upset a Klingon. “Well I am not sure who this scuttlebutt is but they may have exaggerated my abilities but if its relationship advice you’re looking for then I’ll try my best.” The Trill officer thought for a moment and then decided on his answer before saying it verbally, “I think relationships are tricky you need to be patient just because things aren’t working with some people doesn’t mean it won’t work with others. Love, so to speak isn’t something you can force on someone its something that should come naturally. It’s likely not anything you’re doing wrong or doing right but just that you haven’t met the right person yet, you’re young so you have plenty of time. My previous host Loran didn’t find their mate until they were sixty and some Trill don’t ever mate, its sometimes considered a bit of an inconvenience.”

  • Commander Raauhl, XO

“Sixty? That’s a bit old. What was wrong with him?” Jessie made a gesture with her smallest finger. She growled lowly, then titled her head back and let out a laugh that came from the bottom of her belly. Tears ran down the corners of her eyes before she finally stopped laughing at her own juvenile joke. “Well Commander, I hope I don’t have to wait that long. How will I know when I have meet this right person? “
