Monsant frowned to himself as he stepped aboard the ship that would be his home for the foreseeable future, and gave his earring a nervous brush.

It wasn’t that he hadn’t been looking forward to a deep space posting; far from it. But now that the reality of the situation was upon him - now that he was wearing an active officer’s uniform with a single pip, rather than a cadet’s jumpsuit - now that he could gaze out a window and not clearly see either his own home star, or the home star of his ancestors without extensive concentration - now it was real.

His father had been little help; although he had served briefly as a provisional officer in both the Federation and the Bajoran forces, his brief service had not provided him much insight. His mother and uncle were far more helpful, in that regards.

Uncle Cox had said, “Earn your crewmate’s respect both on and off duty, and the rest will follow. In space, you all depend on each other to survive. Oh, and learn poker.”

Mom had said, “Never look down on an enlisted crewman, and don’t fall in love with your superior officer.” She had then gotten in an argument with dad… which was a bit confusing for Monsant; mom had been a full Commander, dad had only a provisional Ensign’s grade.

In any respect, he knew that the first thing he needed to do was check in. Carrying his duffelbag lazily over his shoulder, he made his way to the sickbay, and found the medical crewman on duty.

“Pardon me, Chief, is there anyone available to perform my boarding physical, or should I make an appointment instead?”

“Nope we are in a down time,” Jasmine said with a half grin. “Between duty shifts. It is always the most hectic with people who push through and come in half dead or the ones that are looking for an excuse to get off their shift. Come with me,” she motioned for him to follow leading him across the room towards an open bed. “I’m Dr. Wynter not to be confused with Lt. Commander Wynter who is my husband. The easy way to tell us apart is I fix the things he breaks,” she gave a small laugh. “Now who are you,” she asked pulling out a tricorder.

Monsant was parsing the statements as he followed. So, the doctor was married a commander, so likely another member of the senior staff… something useful to know about his new home. “Ah. Well, I am Ensign Kavox Monsant, just assigned as a science officer here. I’ll try not to break too many things; I wouldn’t want to be accused of putting your husband out of a job after all.” He said this with a lazy grin, as he settled in next to the bed.

“Meh,” she waved her hand. “He needs to work for his paycheck. If you break something it will give him something to do besides Gaggle and Bang all day because everything is running smoothly. That man surfs the extranet more than anyone I know,” Jasmine joked. “Besides a good scientist takes risks or I have been told. So Monsant, Kavox, Ensign,” she read the title on the chart the way Starfleet presented it on permanent records. “Tell me a little about yourself.” While she waited for him to begin, Jasmine activated the tricorder and began to scan him.
