Calloway grimaced. “Ewww, so you’re going to make me socialize as a punishment. That’s rough.” She feigned a long suffering sigh. “But I suppose it’ll be the least I can do for breaking your ship.” She really did seem to not like the idea of socializing but at least recognized the joke within it.

“Oh yes” he warned, seizing the moment, “socializing, we can’t have the gremlin of the Manhattan hiding away in a dark corner now can we?”

“Yes, we definitely could,” she deadpanned.

“If your level 3 Engineering, I could use you from time to time down here as well. Without the support from Beta we do a lot of in house modifications ourselves, be handy to have someone to make sure we tidy up the thought process behind it. Interested?”

She brightened up a little bit. “Sure! Been awhile since I really got my hands dirty in something other than soil and code, so why not. Happy to help. Just send stuff my way and so long as I’m not working on anything immediately pressing. And if we’re ever dealing with significant damage to the ship and you’re short handed, just call me. I’ll do what I can to help.”

~Faye Calloway, Data Scientist

“That’s helpful, thank you” Max said and then the smile turned into the grin. “If your helpful enough I might get you your own Engineers tool belt with named tools, I can’t do much about the tunic color though.”

“Easy there Chief,” Faye said dryly. “I’m a gremlin, remember? I don’t do fancy tool belts. I just borrow what I need and put them back when I’m done with a nice little note of thanks.” How much of that was actually true remained to be seen.

Just then the Warp Core pulsed as Engineers on the deck below them moved around the consoles, the rhythmic hum of the ships heart coming to life louder and more noticeable as before. Like most ships, it was smooth, calming and the colors as the antimatter flows created the reaction swirled deep in the core for those that started at it long enough. To some, the core itself had it’s own sound and frequency and they would know it simply by closing their eyes and listening. Max’s smile returned and he looked at Faye.

Her brows rose in a question as she gazed at him. It wasn’t like they were scheduled to go anywhere just yet. But all the same, Faye felt something in her relax as the sight of the working warp core.

“Calibration testing on the eps lines” he explained, “when we came through the wormhole we lost a few grids, the calculations and measurements weren’t as exact as needed to handle the jumbled energy we experienced. Since then we’ve been adjusting the grids to compensate, hopefully, they can stand up to what you have in store as well. It sounds like the adjustments worked.”

Her own ear was turned towards the core and she nodded in agreement. “Sounds clean, but then again every core is different and I don’t know this one yet.” It was inevitable that any crew member who spent long enough on any given ship and paid even a modicum of attention to it would eventually recognize the sound of their ship’s warp core when it was working in good order. But then again, she rarely met people except engineers who paid that much attention to the warp core. Except for maybe a commanding officer.

“You will” he quipped as he turned from the core, but keeping an eye on the Engineers below doing their duties. “It sounds like we’re going to see a bit of you now your here, let’s hope your work turns you into one of those helpful gremlins rather than the ones we have to hunt and wrestle into a blender.” His grin revealed the tease, and he turned away from his team fully, trusting them to get their work done.

She gave him a slightly lopsided smirk. “But I’m glad you’re well practiced putting things back to working order again. You’ll need it.”

~Faye Calloway, Data Specialist

“Again with the ominous foreshadowing” he laughed, “and here I was thinking we were going to get along so well. For the record, its Steinlager, cold, and if you really break something big time you owe me a pizza. Not the replicated kind but a whole one.”

Max scratched his chin and looked at his team below once again. “I better get back to work” he said and offered his hand once again with his plain smile back. “Nice to meet you Lieutenant Calloway, try not to break too much before we get out of dock, please?”

The tiny form of Ens. Kaia popped out of a nearby Jeffries Tube. It was so easy for the small alien to crawl around in the Manhattan’s crawlspaces, since she was so much smaller than the average humanoid. “Hello, Leftenant Commander,” she said with a grin. Then noticing the non-engineer in the room, she turned to wave a small, four-fingered hand. “Who’s your friend, Chief?”

Ens. Kaia, ENG

Max had slightly raised his eyebrow, he wasnt yet used to having a small alien capable if going places that the small Galdorian did with such ease, but it was certainly a boon.

With a nod, he Introduced the two. “Ensign Kaia, this is Leiutenant Calloway, Faye is our ships data specialist and is going to be working on a few things that might strain our EPS grid in a few spots. Shes going to let us know where and when, so we just need to monitor the grid and perhaps reduce the flow or route it alternately while the work takes place. The Leutenant is also rated level 3 In Engineering, so if we need an extra helping hand we can count on her aid.” Then, he looked back to Faye. “Faye this is one of my senior Engineers, Ensign Kaia. Of I’m not on hand here, Kaia is the one you need.”
