Kaia was in the Holodeck, but the door was open with a sign that told any passerby that they were welcome to join in. Inside the holographic room was a wooded environment, large trees with sunlight filtering through the leaves, with a well-worn walking path. The air was cool and crisp, the leaves gaining a slight orange tint - the environment imitated that of Autumn. Jogging along that path in what amounted to jogging pants and a t-shirt was the diminutive Engineering officer, essentially just enjoying the weather and the exercise.

Kaia continued to jog through the enchanting landscape. After a while of running through the wooded path, the path opened up onto a wide field full of what looked like some sort of grain. Kaia stopped and took a head off the grain and sniffed it, tilting her head. “Hmm,” she murmured to herself, letting the wind take away the stuff before she kept running.

The doors to the holodeck swooshed open, and Logan entered. The program automatically changed his uniform into more proper exercise attire. He now wore a pair of sleek black running pants with a gold colored wife-beater shirt. “Ensign,” he nodded as he had forgot her name.

Kaia turned to glance at Lt. Drake. “Lt,” she said with a small nod. “It’s a nice environment, isn’t it?” she questioned, looking around as she paused in her running for a moment. “I found a program that was called ‘jogging path’ and this is what I got…” The young alien smiled at the human who had joined her, then turned back to her jogging.

Kaia

“It’s not bad,” Logan agreed. ” I routinely set my program for temperate forest with a light rain, thunderstorms, and a bit higher gravity at 1.8g’s.”

CoS

“Why would you want thunderstorms and rain?” Kaia asked, taking a gulp of water from the bottle she had brought into the Holodeck with her. “1.8 gs is pretty high too, that’s almost twice the gravity on my planet! I don’t think I could run in that,” she huffed.

Ensign Kavox made his way into the holodeck, wearing a black headband and a set of 5 kilo weights around his wrists and ankles, otherwise he was in his duty uniform. He spotted the human speaking to what looked to him like some sort of hara cat? Tall one, if it was, maybe standing on her hind legs? His eyes squinted for a moment as he tried to remember the significance, causing his nose wrinkles to squish together, until his eyes brightened with an ‘aha’ expression. He caught the tail end of the comment about 1.8g, and laughed a little.

“My old gym teacher, a nasty old Ranjen with a perpetual chip on his shoulder, used to make us work out in high-g thinking it would make us fierce back when I was a kid. He once got us up to 2.3g, and we were all sweating, grunting, and generally cursing his name and probable ancestry, and suddenly the grav generator he was using broke, and we were suddenly in 0.1g. He ended up in the building rafters, cursing down on us as if we had done it on purpose. So naturally, I kicked open the controls to the generator and reset them… while he was still in the air.”

“That’s horrid,” Kaia commented as she ran. “I’m Ens. Kaia from Engineering, by the way. I don’t think I’ve seen you around,” she said to the new arrival. “Did he keep making you run in high gravity after that?” She was about the size of a Terran cat if it was standing on its hind legs, although her anatomy was a little different. Her fur was a tan shade, and she had lilac-point markings, her feet, hands, face, ears, and the end of her tail fading into a soft greyish-brown.

They were currently running through a field of grain, and up ahead of them in the running path was another wooded area.

Monsant gave off a hearty laugh. “Ahh, ok, I’m Ensign Kavox Monsant, science department. Oh, he never tried it again. Once Doc Carey found out why his leg was broken, he made the…” He paused just a moment. “.. well, he made the authorities yank the whole accursed thing out. He had to settle for torturing us in normal grav after that.”

Kaia nodded slightly. “I’m glad I never had a teacher like that,” she muttered. She continued to jog. Her small figure seemed fairly suited to running, although perhaps not as much as that of a human. She stopped to take a breather, drinking a little more of her water.

Monsant gave a little shrug. “People who lived through the Occupation, they always seem to think those of us born afterwards are weak. They want struggling and suffering to be the defining characteristic of our entire species, just because it was the defining characteristic of their generation.” He shrugged again and took a long drink from his water bottle. “At least that’s what my dad says, and it made some sense to me.”

-Kavox Monsant

“Oh, you’re not human?” Kaia stared at him for several moments, trying to pick out the difference. When she couldn’t find it with her eyes, she stepped over to Monsant and took a deep breath through her nose, sniffing the air around him. “Ooh!” she exclaimed, jumping back again. The little two-foot tall ensign grinned slightly. “You’re from that Bajor planet, aren’t you? I’m so sorry,” she looked a little sheepish. “All you humanoid races look so similar to me…”
