Cochrane listened as she spoke. “So how will you account for the signal disruption of unfamiliar compression logarithms when the signal reaches the subspace relay networks? I mean, that may end up giving you false incompatibility flag when it hits, right? Or do you have a particular frequency assigned for the project that has been cleared before hand?” he asked inquisitively. It was obvious he was interested, and had at least a rudimentary knowledge of the subject. While he was no Scientist or Engineer by any means, he wasn’t entirely blind to the other disciplines. And knowing if there was a frequency he should’t step on in the course of the mission may help keep the project moving along.

Her eyes were told the story going on in her head where she calculated how best to convey something. At least she had always bene able to do that if not hold her tongue when her emotions got the better of her. “In part. There is an approved frequency and I will be testing with it extensively. I also have some… special pieces of hardware that will be, if they work properly, able to counter any issues that one would expect with us sending data through not only a relay but a wormhole. It’s part tweaking what we know, and the the rest is purely experimental.” She held up a hand as if anticipating a protest. “I do have plans to double transmit things, one through normal system processes, and also with the enhanced version. I can compare the data that I’m given from Command in return and analyze and weak from there.” In truth, this was really exciting and it showed in the micro-expressions on her face. She was finally doing something worth if her notable IQ and multitude of skills.

Cochrane nodded. “Sounds like you have all the bases covered that you can, Lieutenant. I’d say that the project is well in hand. All I will say from my end is that the mission of the ship comes first, so if we are ever in a position we have to pick between your project and the ship, the ship wins. I sincerely doubt that will be the case, but I want you and I to be on the same page. I’ll do whatever I can to assist, up to and including staying out of your way and making sure others do the same. Deal?”

Faye sat forward a bit. “The ship is“-she placed her hands on her chest-“my mission, Captain. What good is exploring and meeting new and re-encountering old species if the data about all we experience isn’t safe? I know my record is a bit of a head-scratcher at times, but if there is anything I need you to believe about me, it’s that for better or worse, Starfleet is my life, and I am committed to this ship. I’ve worked really hard to come back from… well, Hell. I could have walked away from Starfleet, but the reality is that this is the best place for me. Do with that what you will, but know you can trust me to look out for the Manhattan, Captain.”
