Gwyn walked up to her Department Heads door and as she went to activate the Chinese her hand malfunctioned and it started to hurt her. “Ah! That hurts!” She leaned on the door with a large amount of force. She regained her composure and activated the chime and she continued to whince. The sweat still continued to come down her face.

“Enter” came the voice of the Chief Engineer from within his Office. This Office overlooked Main Engineering from the middle deck of the complex, and from here Max could look out over the warp core and his team as they carried out their duties, a short set of stairs leading down from the cutaway deck that ringed the room to the Main Engineering deck below. The Doors opened smoothly to reveal the Lieutenant Commander standing at a panel on the wall, which displayed the various schematics he might wish to call up. He appeared to be comparing notes on a PaDD in his hand to individual maintenance lights that appeared on the various decks he was flitting through, and didn’t immediately look around at whoever was at the door.

A man with short dark blond hair and slight stubble that looked more groomed than a few days growth, he seemed focused on the task at hand and notably was still wearing his engineering tool belt with an assortment of tools ready at hand. “How can I help you Ensign?” he asked, still without looking around at all.

OOC: I meant chime not Chinese. I was using my phone and it autocorrected.
IC: “I’m the new engineer. I’m supposed to go to the department head’s office. Which is… Ah you understand.” She sat down and kept working on her hand. “So what is it when need to talk about?”

Max paused in his work on the ship schematic and turned as the Ensign made her way to the chair in front of his desk, watching without comment as she sat and fiddled with the hand. Placing the PaDD to one side on a nearby desk his eyebrow rose just slightly and he moved near to the chair the Ensign had made herself at home in, placing his hands behind his back almost casually but obviously formally to anyone paying attention.

“First thing we need to talk about” he said, using the Ensigns own words and making a point to look at the hand, “Ensign Frazer, is whether this is in fact a social visit or if you are making a report to your Department Head on a Starfleet vessel.”

“I apologize, sir but…” She took a deep breath. “You have no idea how much this hurts.” She pointed to her cybernetic hand. “It interferes with my work and my life.” She looked up at him. “I’m here to report in to my Department Head on a Starfleet Vessel.” She said formally. “Before you ask, no, the hand will not be a liability to this ship.”

“I may beg to differ Ensign” Max said, not unkindly but more as a point of discussion. “If it hurts, and interferes with your life it most certainly interferes with you, and if it affects your work as you say then it interferes with you, and that is a liability to my staff and this ship. Perhaps you should remove it.”

He remained standing, looking at the Ensign seated before him, “And it seems to have affected your memory that when you report to an Officer you stand up until you are invited to take a seat Frazer. Your last posting may have been relaxed on shipboard etiquette Ensign, but this is a real Starship and I doubt the Executive Officer or Captain would look favorably on a member of my Department forgetting basic Academy training. I know I do not.” His tone wasn’t condescending or stern, simply reminding the Ensign about expected behavior of Officers in Starfleet.

She stood up quickly. “I apologize, sir. I’m nervous. I’ve heard a lot about this ship. Sir, I have thought about removing my hand. It is…” She sighed. “Annoying, but I have lived with it for most of my life. I worked with my parents in their work and it’s never been a problem, but if you order me to… I will.” She straightened her back and looked forward.

“Well” Max began, now moving behind his desk to his chair, then nodding for the Ensign to be seated, again, and taking his own seat. “I’m not going to order you to remove it, a one handed Engineer isn’t much good to anyone when the torpedo’s start flying and we have holes to patch, but we are Engineers and there has to be a reason why that thing is giving you pain. We will look into it, the cybernetics division of Starfleet Medical should have already sorted that before assigning an Officer to a Starship, have you though about getting the nerve endings dulled by Medical to prevent the pain associated with the electronic signals agitating them to work the cybernetic device?”

She sat and said, “I have had some nerves dealt with but others are very hard to get to. When my parents designed it, they never took into possibility that I may have to work on it.”

“Of course, sir. I do want to see what they could do. If you could help me, I think I could fix it. Would you be willing to help, sir?” She tapped the desk nervously.
