Faye smirked slightly at Cochrane. “And here you were giving me a hard time about the hours I kept. Aren’t commanding offices supposed to be setting good examples for their crew?” she said pointedly, only half-teasing.

She dug into the hot stew, grateful for its warmth and satisfying taste.

“We are. But I get a pass since I just got here.” he said with a chuckle. Taking a bite of the stew, his eyes went wide in surprise. After a few more bites, he said “This is amazing. I don’t think I’ve had anything like it… well, maybe once. But that was on Risa. I doubt that recipe has found it’s way to the Delta Quadrant.”

Ripping off a strip of the bread, Faye dunked it into the stew and grinned slightly. “Yeah, not impossible, but unlikely. It does remind me of something we would have made back on Tracken II. We did a lot of communal cooking for the evening meal and this is something people would have contributed produce from their plot to.”

Popping the bread into her mouth, Calloway nodded slowly as she chewed and swallowed. “It is good,” she admitted.

Cochrane nodded in agreement and took a few more bites. “So how much do you have left to do before your project is on-line? Not asking for specifics, just a time-table.”

She pondered for a moment, turning the bread around with her fingers. “Probably a week? If everything goes well. If I work a few long days, then a couple days of that will be initializing the new system in sections and checking for issues. As agreed, I let you know I’m about to bring the last bit online.”

Looking out the window, it still amazed her how close she was in a figurative sense to where her mother had once been. Initially she had thought it would make her feel more connected to the woman who had disappeared from her life twenty-four years ago, but that initial feeling had faded with reality. Shara wasn’t out here anymore and she had never come for Faye. The chances of them ever being reunited were slim- either by chance or by Shara’s choice. Where are you? she wondered silently.
