She pondered for a moment, turning the bread around with her fingers. “Probably a week? If everything goes well. If I work a few long days, then a couple days of that will be initializing the new system in sections and checking for issues. As agreed, I let you know I’m about to bring the last bit online.”

Looking out the window, it still amazed her how close she was in a figurative sense to where her mother had once been. Initially she had thought it would make her feel more connected to the woman who had disappeared from her life twenty-four years ago, but that initial feeling had faded with reality. Shara wasn’t out here anymore and she had never come for Faye. The chances of them ever being reunited were slim- either by chance or by Shara’s choice. Where are you? she wondered silently.

Cochrane watched her stare out the window and fall into deep thought. He didn’t interrupt, it was late and people tend to do that when they are tired. He simply ate his stew and had a piece of bread. The chef came out to clear some of the unused dishes and said “Captain. Hope you enjoyed the meal. Do you need anything else?” Cochrane shook his head in the negative. “No, thank you Chef. It was marvelous. Best I’ve had since Risa, actually.”

Faye’s attention was drawn as Harv returned and she gave him a friendly sort of nod.

The words hit Harv and he dropped one of the bread plates on the deck and it shattered. “Oh hell! Oh. I’m -I’m-I’m… oh no. So sorry, sir. I’ll get the cleaned up in a jif. No problem. My apologies. Won’t happen again. Be right back!” and he took off like he had been shot out of a cannon into the kitchen.

Harv, Chef

Faye startled and her stormy grey-green eyes widened as she took in Harv and his clearly panicked reaction.

Cochrane was startled by the plate, but even more so by the Chef’s reaction. Looking at Calloway after Harv left, he said “It was just a plate! What was that about?”

Her eyes were fixed on where Harv had retreated into the kitchen. “I… don’t know,” she said softly, but it was clear by her expression that she was intrigued. And when Faye was intrigued, there was little that could dissuade her to focus elsewhere. But I will find out. Under the circumstances, maybe the hoopla she complained to Blue about had its merits. Maybe what she was looking for was something else entirely they hadn’t considered. She didn’t disagree with her orders, but they hadn’t really given her the flexibility she needed to do this properly and adapt as things unfolded. Maybe she’d just have to go with it and face whatever consequences later.

Shifting her attention back to her stew, she devoured another bite. “So… Risa? Any good? Never been there myself, but everyone seems to rave about the place. To me that means there’s a good chance it’s highly overrated,” she said with a tiny smirk.
