Jasmine began to work on other sections of the burns as the nurses and other doctors took sections also so that the treatment progressed as quickly as possible. An hour later Jasmine set down the last dermal regenerator. A soft bandage was over Faye’s eyes. She would be able to see but it would take a moment for her eyes to adjust once Faye opened them much like a bright light filling a room where you were sleeping. Taking a seat next to the science officer, Wynter leaned back in the chair to begin the paperwork and wait for the woman to awaken.

A little while later, Faye’s levels of consciousness began to rise. Her mind then shifted into dreaming.

A flash of light preceded the sensation of moving through the air before there was a sudden sensation of pain as her body hit the ground. Dazed, Faye looked up and where as in reality, it would have been Romulans in military uniforms standing over her, the face of the now dead lover peered over her. “Faye… Faye it’s time to go.”

She sat up, her head throbbing and looked around. It was not the charade of a science complex she sat in, but instead she sat amongst the tall grass overlooking the lake of her childhood. The sun was warm and she closed her eyes, savouring the heat that spread over her skin.

But that heat suddenly felt too hot. Her heart started racing as she sensation moved swiftly to uncomfortable to unbearable.

Jasmine reclined in the chair next to Faye. They had been working for a few hours on her burns. It was exhausting work trying to keep Faye as comfortable as possible as they treated her body almost inch by inch. The work was not hard but mentally it was taxing. It always was in cases like this: Cases that involved the crew. As a doctor, she could maintain a professional distance but when you worked side by side with people it was vastly harder than a nobody walking into a clinic. A beep caused her eyes to open as she looked at the body function panel above the bed. The K3 Indicator showed that her pain tolerances were within normal limits but that was only a guideline reference. Real people tolerated pain differently and Faye’s tolerance was well above most peoples so the reading might not be accurate. What concerned Jasmine more was the beats per minute rapidly increasing.

Calloway’s heart rate showed an increase on the monitor and a moment later, she bolted upright. “No!” she shouted, wide eyed, exhaling a panicked breath.

“Faye…Calloway you are okay,” Jasmine said flying to her feet. It was then she made a rookie move. She leaned in.

She tried to looked around, but it was mostly dark with brightness around the edges. Her hands instantly moved up to her face, feeling the edges of the bandage there.

“Duck nuggets,” Jasmine winced taking a step back as she walked right into Faye’s hand moving towards her face. It was not Faye’s fault at all. Jasmine had literally broken Bedside Manner 101 of don’t get up in a patient’s grill when they are coming out of surgery, coming out of anesthesia, or coming out of a traumatic event. Faye was experiencing the trifecta and Jasmine was treating it like it was the woman came in for some Alka-Seltzer for a stomach ache.

Faye felt her hand ache slightly, but she couldn’t quite connect that with it having collided with the poor doctors face. This time too, it was her right hand, which was her dominant one. At least she hadn’t been aiming. A few people had experienced her intentional right hook and it was never a good situation.

Blinking trying to move the tearing up of he eye, Jasmine placed a hand on Faye’s shoulder and offered comfort. “Calloway you are safe. I put a bandage over your eyes. They take longer for the medicine to work because your cornea was flash burned and we don’t want scarring. That is why it is black. I promise you are okay,” she said firmly but gently.

Faye hadn’t realized she was holding her breath and she exhaled. A part of her wanted to brush the hand on her shoulder away but she began to recognize that the voice was the same as the one earlier and that it belonged to their Chief Medical Officer. “So… I’ll be able to see properly again? What about the rest of the burns. It could feel it. I know they were there,” she said in a small voice. She was doing her best to breathe calmly to keep her panic at bay, but so much about this situation played right into her time with the Tal Shiar- far closer than she wanted to think about right now.

“You are going to be fine,” Jasmine said patting her shoulder. “The miracle of medical technology can fix up anyone right a rain given just a little bit of time. There will be no scarring but the area will be sensitive and maybe a little sore as the epidermis returns to normal. So you want to tell me how it happened,” Jasmine asked dropping into the seat next to Faye. She knew the question was open ended. She wanted it that way. Whatever Faye wanted to share, Jasmine would listen to.

The doors to Sickbay slid open and Cochrane came through, a look of obvious concern on his face. Seeing the CMO and Calloway, he made his way over to them. Looking at the CMO and then Calloway, he said “Doctor. How is your patient?”
