Cochrane made his way to the Security Chief’s office. He was a bit more relaxed here, as this was his background, and he was interested in seeing what the Security Chief was like. Walking past a few crew members who did a double take as he passed, he came to the office door and pressed the chime. He hated it when the his old CO would just walk in his office, he wasn’t about to do the same with his crew.

Cochrane, CO

“Enter!” came the voice within the office. The door swoshed open to reveal the room itself. There were two comfy arm chairs facing a desk. The desk had the standard LCARS terminal and a few data pads lying on it.

Logan was sitting on the business end. He was busy working on his terminal. A mug of freshly replicated, steaming hot coffee was a hand.

The only decoration the room had was antique phaser rifle mounted on the bulkhead behind him. It was from the circa 2260’s.

Cochrane walked in and looked at the man and, after a moment waiting for the man to look up, smiled slightly and said “Lieutenant Drake, I presume?” and crossed his hands behind his back.

Cochrane, CO

“It is my office,” Logan said as he finished entering something on his LCARS terminal. The tallish, lanky, middle-aged, blond haired human then leaned back in his chair and said, “What can I do for — “.

He stopped talking as he recognized who it was that he was speaking to.

“Captain!” He exclaimed in obvious surprise. He scrambled to stand up at attention.

CSO

Cochrane chuckled and said “Relax, Lieutenant. I just wanted to check in with you and see where your department is at. Just trying to get the ‘lay of the land’, as they used to say.” and he gestured to a chair and said “You mind if I sit for a moment? I don’t want to interrupt if you have pressing matters.”

Cochrane, CO

“Please, Sir,” Logan agreed. “I was just catching up with running some evals on a few of my junior security officers.”

“We could always use a few more officers. But we haven’t really had any security issues.”

CoS

Cochrane took a seat and said “I know you are a bit short handed, Chief. Trust me, I’m working on that. As we encounter new races, the last thing I want is to be short handed on ship’s security. But until I can get you a few more staff, just try to do the best you can with what you have.” and he looked around the room. “So tell me about your self, Mr. Drake. What brought you to the Manhattan?”

Cochrane, CO

“Once, I was a a chief engineer of another starship,” Logan replied. “Then I was part of a team of Starfleet special operations. Then I decided to get into security.”

“Ship security is a different animal than security at a starbase.”

CoS

“Too true.” Cochrane replied. He was well aware of the security needs, and how they varied, not only from ship to station but also in the myriad ways individual ships operated. “So why the switch from Engineering? Hours are better and the offices are more comfortable.” he asked with a knowing smile.

Cochrane, CO

Logan replied, “How many times do you call for the CE to go on the away mission? That, and I had a rather bad time as a CE. After I went into security, I got to work for Starfleet Operations. I was into many of those black Op missions. I found the implications of many of them to be… Interesting.”

CoS

Cochrane nodded in understanding. “‘Interesting’… well, that’s one word for it, I suppose. I always found the potential blow-back from some of them to be something the higher ups didn’t really think about ahead of time.” and he looked around the office for a second. “So do you have an Assistant? Or someone who could fill the role? I’m a big proponent of redundancy in the Department hierarchy, as it were. So when you go on an Away Team -” he said with a grin in acknowledgement of the Security Chief’s previous statement, - we know ship’s security is in good hands.”

Cochrane, CO

Logan replied, “It’s been my experience that departmental assistants either always want the department head job, or they want to get transferred to some other ship to get that job. So they’re bad for the morale of the whole department.”

CoS

Cochrane cocked an eyebrow at the Security Chief’s statement. “I suppose that could happen. But the same could be said for some Executive Officers, don’t you think?” and he set his hands on his lap. “I suppose it’s all relative to the individual selected for the role. It’s my belief that those that show promise should be granted the opportunity to learn and be given more responsibility. Help them become better, and the ship as a whole becomes better.” and he looked intently at the Security Chief for a moment. “But I will also say this. It’s your department and I’m not going to tell you how to run it. Just make sure that the ship is secure.”

Cochrane, CO

“Hmm,” Logan pondered. “Maybe I can use an assistant chief at that. Someone to work the night watch. Or to stand in when I go on an away mission.”

CoS

“If you have someone you think could handle the responsibility, it might not be a bad idea. But again, your department… your rules.” and he let the subject drop.

“So other than a staff shortage, what else do you need? Any glaring holes we need to address before we leave?”

Cochrane, CO

“This is an almost new ship, Sir,” Logan replied. “All of the weapons and security systems are functioning well into normal operating parameters.”

CoS

“Ok…” Cochrane replied, maybe expecting a bit more. “What about the crew? Any issues? Incidents of note? We are far from home and surrounded by new species. I don’t want a trouble-maker trying to make it harder on the crew more than it is.”

Cochrane, CO

“I haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary,” Logan said. “Hmm you’re the second person to ask me about how the crew was doing. An officer named Caloway also did that.”
