“Voyager definitely didn’t paint them as an eloquent race; ‘exciting’ might just be an understatement!” Riali added from where she was situated at the science station, swerving around to face the Raka engineer and Cochrane.

Lt. Deandres
CSO

Cochrane chuckled. “Too true, Lieutenant. Passive scans on their vessels. Comms, let’s hail our new guests and see if Voyager’s files hold up to our first contact, shall we?” He stood up and then had a thought. “Belay that order, Comms.” and he tapped his badge. =/\=Bridge to Diplomatic Attache Anders. Your services are requested on the bridge immediately. Bridge out. =/\= he said in friendly manner. He looked at the bridge crew, shrugged, and said “We have a Diplomat, may as well use them, right?” with a grin.

Cochrane, CO

=^=Yes, sir… On my way,=^= was Vorraye’s response. She quickly changed into a more suitable tunic top and breeches and headed for the bridge.

“Agreed and she will have her work cut out for her,” Celina said entering the bridge. “I was hanging out in security when the call came in about the Kazon arriving at the station,” she explained how she was semi up to date and hadn’t been on the bridge until this moment. Handing the captain a PaDD she moved to her station continuing to brief the captain on the contents of the PaDD. “The Kazon are a patriarchal society and there have been reports that they will treat foreign women like they treat their own women. As second class citizens, you talk down to. Aside from that, they are also the only species known to have been rejected by the Borg for assimilation because they were unremarkable. Kinda embarrassing species stat but we should be able to outgun them if the diplomatic options go south,” Celina replied bottom lining the conversation.

Lt. Celina Rodgriguez CTO

“I wonder how they would treat me,” Kaia wondered aloud. “I am not exactly screaming my gender to the rooftops like all you humanoid species do,” she gestured briefly to her very flat chest. There was almost no visual difference between the males and females of the Raka, from a human’s point of view. “In all honesty, they would likely view me as an inferior species due to my size. But I would be fascinated to see how they would react to a Laleri or a Hatriku…”

Kaia, Eng

A moment later, the young lady arrived on the bridge with a smile on her face. Stepping into the room she glanced around the room and made note of everyone there. Something told her this wasn’t a social call.

Vorraye Anders
Diplomatic attache

Cochrane looked up as the doors opened and a grin crossed his face. “Ms. Anders, thank you for coming. We have new arrivals at the station. The Kazon. Thought you might want to stretch your diplomacy legs a bit. Comms are at your disposal.”

Cochrane, CO

“Sir…” Vorraye nodded to him and moved to the vacant space beside him. “Shall we say hello?” She then glanced at the view screen and nodded to the helm to open the comms. =^= This is Diplomatic Attache Vorraye Anders. To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking? She forced herself not to step closer to the screen. Moving in front of the CO would mean she thought of herself as better than him. To a species who did not place females very high on the ‘respect list’, this could be seen as making the Captain look weak. She would not risk that when she had no idea what the situation was.

Vorraye
Diplomat

A few moments of silence passed and then a face appeared on the screen. A male Kazon looked at Anders and sneered. “Fetch your mate, female. I will speak only to them.” and the screen went dark.

Cochrane looked at Vorraye and said “Oh, I can tell you two are going to be bestest friends already.” and chuckled. He knew that the Diplomat was aware of the Kazon reputation for it’s view on women. He was actually impressed that she hadn’t, in the name of diplomacy, recommended that he speak to them first. “Might as well set the standards from the get-go.” he thought to himself.

Cochrane, CO

“Should we blow their mind and claim I am her mate,” Celina added with a chuckle. It was a rhetorical question and she hoped the attache could detect that in the tone of her reply which had been thick with sarcasm. In no way was Celina a social justice warrior. She thought that had died in the twenty-first century but she did have little patience for sentient beings not seeing other sentient beings as equals. It was such a simple concept. Treat others as you wanted to be treated. Apparently, the Kazon did not teach this principle in their kindergarten classes.

Lt. Celina Rodriguez CTO

Cochrane smiled a small but mischief-filled grin. “I’m down for it if you two are. Although we might want to save deliberately antagonizing new species until we are a little more familiar with our new play-area. And who the playground bullies are…”

Cochrane, CO

Olivia looked up from her chai beside the captain unsure of what was going to happen next. She looked up at the captain and wondered if she should join them or stay behind on the ship.

Grace, CNS

“Agreed buuuuuuuuut,” she drew out the word like a teenager trying to convince her father to give her the codes to the shuttle for Friday night, “we do have the power to drag their happy behinds up and down the playground without getting grass stains on our clothes. Just saying,” Celina shrugged it off. She would not press the issue but she as all about sending an all female away team to meet the Kazon. As CTO she was meant to hink of all the tactical options available in a situation. She let this idea of an all female crew float around in her head for a minute and then became perplexed at the thought. If Cochrane met them with an all female crew it might appear that he was In the house, as the frat boy college films always seemed to imply when a man walked in with several beautiful women. This would probably impress the Kazon and that was the last thing she wanted to do. If they came in with a mixed crew it would probably be best. Although the most adventerou option would be to leave the XO and CO on the ship as an all female away team went over yet no one was going to go for that. So many options to annoy the Kazon and yet so little time to try them all.

Lt. Celina Rodgriguez CTO

“Just because we can doesn’t mean we should, Lieutenant. But I will certainly keep the option in mind.” he said with a slight chuckle.

Cochrane, CO

Vorraye laughed as the banter bounced around the room. “If we aren’t careful, they’ll go home and claim women have harems and men are played with for pleasure.” She laughed at the idea and shook her head. “I’m sure we can slip in a peck on my darling’s cheek, should it come to that later,” she said with a wink to the tactical officer to let her know the idea didn’t offend her, but amused her. “But in this case I’m thinking the Captain may be the prime gender this time.” She glanced at him and batted her eye lashes. “Though being ‘your’ mate may not be a good thing either. We’ll stir up the sandbox later. But for now, Captain, I believe you should hail them and perhaps just defer to me openly, rather than in private as we would on most diplomatic missions. In this instance, your open display of valuing my opinion, or even deferring to it if you desire, should be a sufficient display of human behavior. Don’t you think?”
She didn’t step back behind him but did move back to his side.

Vorraye
Diplomat

Cochrane nodded and said “Sounds like a plan to me.” and he stood up and nodded at the Comms officer to open the channel. As the channel opened, a slight mischievous twinkle took it’s place in the Captain’s eyes and, once the channel was opened, he said “This is Captain Alexander Cochrane of the United Federation of Planets star ship USS Manhattan. Welcome to Event Horizon Station. May I ask to whom I am speaking?”

There was a pause and then the screen opened up again and the Kazon from before was visible. “I am Commodore Hylek of the Gruto Clan of the Kazon. We are here to conduct trade. You will allow this to happen, will you not?” the figure said in a manner that seemed to indicate his words may not actually be a question.

Cochrane smiled a bit and said “Oh, that’s not up to me, Commodore. I am the Commanding Officer of this ship. The station is a separate entity. If you wish to conduct trade, you have to get clearance from the Federation Diplomatic Corps. They are the ones who have final say on who can and cannot conduct trade and establish formal relationships with us. I’m just here to see who and what is around… you know, Science vessel and all.” he added non-nonchalantly.

“Fine. Direct me to these diplomats of yours.” the Kazon relied tersely. Cochrane smiled, but those that had dealt with him even briefly would know that it was not exactly a friendly smile.

“Oh, you already met her.” he said, making sure to emphasize the word. “Diplomatic Attache Anders. She is the one who will… or will not… allow you to conduct your trade mission. I’d recommend remembering that not all species follow your social rules, Commodore. We in the Federation promote on merit… not gender. Just a bit of advice, Sir.” and he looked at Vorraye, he face turned from the view screen and looked at her with a sly grin. “Madame. Commodore Hylek on the comms for you.”

Cochrane, CO
