(Firstly let me apologize for this taking so long, work has been getting the better of me for the last few months as I’ve somewhat changed fields and have been on a non-stop rollercoaster that is Sales Engineering working/learning with a product I know nothing about. But I should be in a good place to finally be able to post more consistently!)

Tyv wasn’t the most easiest person to get along with and he was pretty sure the pink skin he traveled with was sick of him by the time he stepped off the shuttle into the shuttlebay. Almost as he took his bag off the shuttle and looked around it was already beginning to perform it’s procedures for departure. As he looked around for a Federation ship it wasn’t half bad. Surely it was no Andorian Warship, but it would do. His antennae swiveled around his head getting an idea of the location as he headed towards the interior of the ship. He adjusted the Hrisal at his waist. It wasn’t easy getting it accepted as a cultural accessory, but he would be damned if he’d be anywhere without it. After several combative arguments and back and forth from the Andorian embassies to the Academy, they reluctantly allowed him to carry it after he finished with the academy since he was enrolled with the Officer Exchange Program. He didn’t quite fit in with the first few ships he had been with and with nearly everyone he encountered he had to provide the proof that Starfleet allowed him to carry the 60cm long blade that looked similar to a scimitar. He moved a bit of his rough white hair from out of his eyes, he’d have to make sure it gets cut later as he reached a small terminal in the hallway. “Computer, where is the current Captain of this vessel?”

A prompt response indicated that the Captain was currently in his ready room. Though Tyv know protocol was only to check in with the Department Head, Medical, and the Counselor he felt that it was essential to check in with the Captain of the ship in order to understand and see who he was serving under as well as for him to get an idea of who will be serving under him. It was somewhat of an Andorian state of mind, be he knew it was only for the betterment of everyone. Some few arguments before about how it was unnecessary or a waste of time always fell upon deaf ears with him.

His lifestyle was rather simplistic and more or less always had been militaristic. He did not have very many personal belongings aside from the Hrisal at his waist. He picked up the one dufflebag of his belongings and followed the corridors until he silently ended up in front of the ready room. He smoothly pressed the chime and awaited a response from within.

Ensign Tyv (Security)

“Come in.” came a slightly accented voice from within and the doors opened. The office was obviously recently moved into, as there were still a few small boxes stacked in a corner of the room and two bookcases on one wall stood with book shelves behind their glass doors. Pictures had been mounted around the room, and various odds and ends graced places here and there. Displayed prominently, however, on a shelf by itself high up on the wall directly behind the desk that sat opposite the door, was a lone figure of a gold Ox. Lighting had been directed so that it drew the eye of anyone who came through the door almost immediately.

Seated behind the desk was a human male in the red uniform of Command officers. He looked up as the doors opened. His hair was black, making the bright blue eyes beneath the well-groomed hair even more intense. He had a youthful appearance, somewhat more so than the Captain’s pips at his collar would seem to indicate. Looking at the figure in the doorway, his gaze also falling obviously onto the Hrisal on the figures waist, the man said “Yes, Ensign? What can I do for you?”

Upon stepping, in he set is bag down right to the left of the entrance and proceeded to almost march fluidly to be front and center of the Captain’s desk. It’s as if he was comfortable with this kind of situation. Though as he walked up he shifted the PADD he carried in his opposite hand into his left and held his right against the Hrisal to keep it from making noise. With his last step, he snapped to attention in front of the Captains desk, his heels clicking together slightly as he did so. “Good Afternoon Captain, I am Ensign Tyv Ch’qirross and I have been assigned to Security under your command aboard the USS Manhattan. I am reporting in as ordered.”

Though he was facing and staring directly forward his antennae continued to survey the room, getting an understanding of his surroundings and, as paranoid as it may seem, to make sure nothing come up on him from behind. “I have a copy of my orders for you sir along with a cultural exemption for my Hrisal, issued by Starfleet.” He slightly leaned forward, holding the PADD out with his left hand for the Captain to take at his discretion. Though it was a long trip getting here, he could feel the excitement start to build up in his blood. Hopefully this would be a place where he feel he could belong.

Ensign Tyv (Security)

Cochrane leaned back and looked at Tyv, not acknowledging the PaDD. “Ensign, I think we need to establish some boundaries here. First of all, at ease. Second, this isn’t quite the way you come aboard a Star Fleet vessel. You don’t check in with me. Especially before you check in with your Department Head. In fact, you should complete all your check in’s for coming aboard before I even know you are here. I applaud your initiative, but let’s keep things proper and within the confines of the regulations, shall we?” He paused for a moment and then, looking at the Hrisal, he continued.

“Now I am going to sound more than a bit harsh. No one… and I mean no one… is going to walk around this ship armed due to a ‘cultural exemption’. I don’t care if that is signed by the President of the Federation. Yours is not the only martial culture represented on board this ship. I have other Andorians who don’t have the need to carry such… ‘acutriment’… on their person. I also have Klingons, Bajorans, Orions, Iyaarans… all of whom would have just as much cultural impetus to carry weapons as you. So if you are allowed, I would have to allow them as well. This is a science vessel, Ensign… not a war ship. And as we will be dealing with races we have never encountered before, I will not have our first impression be one of potential conflict. So that will be stowed in your quarters or in the Armory, the Security Chief will decide that. Am I clear, Ensign?” he asked. His look was one not of hostility, but simple authority.

Cochrane, CO

OOC: Sorry for the short post :O the longer ones could possibly come afterwards!

IC: His antannae were rather rigid and his jaw could be seen clenching as the Captain spoke, it was clear he didn’t agree at all, though almost as if swallowing the pill he just set down the PADD on his desk and returned to looking straight ahead. “Understood Captain. Permission to speak freely, sir ..?”

Ensign Tyv (Security)

OOC: No problem!

IC; Cochrane’s look was one of not-so-mild irritation, but his voice was calm. “Granted. Say your peace, Ensign.” he replied.

Cochrane, CO

He continued to remain at attention , staring straight ahead at the Captain’s wall, and tried to stay within protocol as much as possible, but he couldn’t let his opinion go un-noted. He wanted to be as efficient and effective as possible, but sometimes the way he approached it didn’t seem to garner the effect he intended. Hopefully with his last few attempted prior to his arrival he might be able to communicate a little more efficiently this time. “It was my intention to complete the check-in’s immediately after meeting with you sir, perhaps it’s an odd Andorian custom, but I believe it to have a beneficial effect to meet the Commanding Officer of a vessel. It provides an opportunity for both parties to learn of the other. On my end, it would provide me insight to how you command this vessel along with possible goals and priorities you might have as a whole so that I can more effectively work towards achieving them. On your end it could perhaps provide insight into myself; To know what I’m capable of, how my personality is, so that you can know how I would be in certain situations that you might assign me in. Whether it’s for exploration or combat sir.” His antennae seems to lose their rigidity over time as he spoke, becoming a bit more comfortable and continued to probe the room again. “On that matter .. what would be the point of having phasers or torpedoes on an exploratory vessel be then? Is it also not protocol for a security officer on an away mission to carry a hand phaser? I don’t see much of a difference between a phaser and my Hrisal aside from the effective range. In my opinion I believe that all your officers should proudly display their culture, whether it’s a weapon or religious material. It could make them more efficient and ready for anything that might come at them.” He paused for but a moment before continuing. “I of course mean no disrespect sir, I’m just trying to figure out how to align myself with your priorities. If you say to store my weapon.. you can consider it done.” His tone through the whole thing didn’t reflect any sort of combativeness to it and towards the end it was clear in his voice that obedience would be rendered if it was requested. He hoped he communicated his position effectively enough to learn more about the Captain as he stood there and awaited the judgement and reply. Ultimately it was the Captain’s decision on anything that goes on within their vessel and he was in no position to even question their authority so if he requested it, almost no matter what it was he would obey. It was basically considered sacrilege to disobey a command back on Andoria, he still held the same belief even now aboard a Federation vessel.

Ensign Tyv (Security)

Cochrane stared at the figure for several long moments. Finally he said simply “Take a seat, Ensign.” and indicated one of the two chairs facing the desk.

Tyv silently and patiently waited until he heard the command from the Captain which prompted an immediate response from Tyv without hesitation. A simple “Yes sir.” was all that came out as he took a step to the right and sat down in the chair perfectly without looking at it once, but then gave the Captain his full attention, sitting straight in the chair.

“I want you take something to heart, Ensign. You are no longer on Andoria, nor are you part of an Andorian crew. You are on board a Federation star ship. And we represent every culture, species, planet, and being who is a part of that Federation. If we allowed everyone to carry and display every last cultural symbol they wished, we would be awash in symbolism. Also, those things show how we are different. Here we emphasize what makes us the same. Religions, cultural heritage, heirlooms, traditions… these are all hings specific to individual beings. We are not individuals here, Ensign. Here we are all Star Fleet. All of us. There are no exceptions to this. And rather than spend our time dealing with what separates us, we will instead focus on what brings us together.” and he paused for a moment before continuing.

“As to your questions about armaments. Having weapons systems allows us to defend ourselves or those in need. But as I am sure you are aware, Federation vessels don’t make a show of their weapon systems much. As for the phaser on an Away Team mission? Ensign, Away Team missions are a far cry from walking through the passageways of your own ship. To be blunt… don’t be obtuse. You now the difference. And if you want to display your culture, I recommend that you do it through your actions. A blade at your side might mean something to your people. It may mean something completely different to another culture. You best remember that, Ensign. And it is your job to make the best first impression you can. Walking around with a weapon that isn’t pertinent to your duties isn’t part of that. You should be able to do your job without it. If you can’t, then maybe we need to find you another line of work.”

Cochrane, CO

Tyv nodded as the Captain finished. “I suppose you are correct sir, a united front is hard to poke holes in, especially when it comes to defense.” There were many races involved with the Federation, Andoians being one of them from the near beginning. All different, same uniform. Hell if it weren’t for the Federation, Andoria would probably still be in a war with the Vulcans and Tellarites. He nodded again, “I will definitely do as you say sir and inquire with the Chief of Security with where to store my Hrisal.” He tilted his head slightly with a look of curiosity upon his scrunched eyebrows. “If you don’t mind me asking, how long have you been with Starfleet ..? What intrigued you to be part of it?”

Ensign Tyv (Security)

Cochrane’s look softened slightly, but the stern visage was still predominant. “I have been in Star Fleet for fourteen standard years. I have a… familial history… of service. One of my siblings also serves. Does anyone else in your family serve in the fleet, Ensign?”

Cochrane, CO

A strong sense of pride overwhelmed his face as he nodded and grinned excitedly. “Yes, of course sir! All of my bondmates are currently in service with the Andorian Defense Force! Along with both my fathers and one of my mothers. My two children are currently too young to serve, but they’re doing quite amazing with their studies! I wouldn’t be surprised if they enlisted as well!” As all Andorians, the emotion in his excitement fueled his speech making it beyond apparent that he enjoyed everything about the topic. “Though it seems that I’ve been the only one interested in Starfleet. Something new and different that they haven’t tried before and I’ve always heard curious stories of pi-” He cut himself off in order to correct his phrasing to “Humans .. apparently they more adaptable, flexible, and resilient than they appear to be. It’s driven my curiosity to the point where I’ve wanted to know more about the Federation as a whole.”

Ensign Tyv (Security)

“It has been my experience that most races seem to underestimate humans for some reason. Must be our charming disposition and gullibility.” Cochrane replied with good natured sarcasm.

Cochrane, CO

Tyv squinted at first trying to figure out how to take the Captain’s comment first before erupting into laughter. “Well said Captain! No one mentioned to me that humans were funny too! This will definitely be an interesting assignment and I believe I will enjoy serving under you sir!” He stood up, back at attention, feeling as if he had wasted enough of the Captain’s time by his most likely ill timed check-in. “With your permission sir, I will continue the proper check-ins. I also happen to have a gift as well sir if you’d accept it?”

Ensign Tyv (Security)

“Permission granted, and a gift is not necessary, Ensign. But if refusal is some kind of insult to you… then let’s see what you have.” he added with a smile.

Cochrane, CO

Tyv grinned widely “Very wise Captain to not refuse a gift from an Andorian!” He made his way back over to the bag that he left near the door and crouched down over by it and unzipped it. “It’s probably something more of my own tradition or maybe even just my own way of giving people a little bit of an introduction to Andorian culture ..” He shuffled around in the bag for a moment, before starting to walk back towards the Captain’s desk with two bottles of a blue fluid. “A small gift for yourself and the First Officer, some Andorian Ale!” The bottles weren’t terribly big, probably only big enough for a drink and a half, but he pridefully set the bottles on the Captain’s desk in front of him before continuing to talk, “The gift varies all the time, whether it’s some Andorian Ale, maybe a small swath of Andorian silk, an ushaan-tor.. depends on whatever I could get my hands on at the time to share! I do have one other bottle as well for my department head as well.” He stood at ease in front of the Captain, hoping he selected an excellent gift before coming to the Manhattan.
