This time Faye snorted. “Fair enough. It’s not like there were any real red flags to find. That I know of so far,” she said with rueful smile.

Regarding the captain, Calloway took her time working through her options. There were very few and his plan did have the best outcome for the ship. Because at the end of the day, she was assigned to the ship as its protector, just acting in a very different way. If she screwed herself over, then she couldn’t do that. Moving forward and stopping in front of him, Faye held out her hand. “Alright, Captain Alexander Cochrane. You’ve accepted a rebel and a spy into your midst willingly. All I can do is pledge to you that I will do everything I can to never make you distrust my loyalty. And I might make a lot of mistakes, but I never make a promise I’m not willing to uphold with my life.” Whether he knew it or not, Faye was not prone to dramatic vows and this was actually a more significant act of vulnerability than any quiet confession she’d share with someone.

Cochrane stood up and looked at her for a moment, and then took her hand in his in a firm shake. “Fair enough. If you do screw up, just tell me. We can deal with consequences later. And as far as rebel and spy goes? As long as you are our rebel and spy, we should be fine.” and he let go. “Now. Let’s get this ‘hidden order’ garbage stowed. Make the call. As far as I’m concerned, you didn’t tell me a damn thing. And then get ready to brief Ops and Engineering. We are going to need them on this to get it done in time. Agreed?”

“Agreed,” she said, looking over the lines of his face for a moment, before taking in the pale eyes that reminded her of icebergs. “I’m the first to admit that my brain doesn’t always set up reasonable expectations, but I did not expect you to take this so well. Why are you?” It was a simple enough question, and she supposed the answer could be simply enough, but as with most things Faye also knew that they existed in layers. What he’d tell her and what might be layered between that, well, that was the the part she’d likely have to draw her own conclusions about. Still, it was worth asking.

Cochrane shrugged and said “I’m not, but.... Well, there really isn’t a whole hell of a lot I can do about it, right? So… we take what we are given and make the best of it. Trust me, there is a lot more swearing going on in my brain then I’m letting on. Probably why they let me have the big chair on the bridge.” and he chuckled. “Calloway, we can unpack the emotional baggage that came with the situation later. Let’s just get the situation resolved first.”

She nodded. “I’ve had imirrhlhhse going through my head since yesterday, so…” Calloway shrugged. “I’ll go call my handler. Despite what the situation may call for, my going straight to my handler is actually going to be taken better. Besides, I need to report the near marring of”-she pointed to her face-“this anyway, and for there I can slip in the rest. If nothing else, he’s proven to have my back as much as he’s able, so we’ll see how that unfolds.”
