The doors to the Engineering bay on Deck 18 opened and the new Commanding Officer walked through. Looking out on the warp core, he took in the large space spanning multiple decks and the Engineers moving about keeping things in proper working order. Cochrane smiled a bit and then looked over at the Master Systems Display. After a few moments he nodded and then walked to the Chief Engineer’s office and pressed the chime.

It took a moment, but presently the doors opened. Instead of the Chief Engineer greeting him, a very attractive woman in the gold of engineering instead walked out straightening her tunic . She recognized the man by the pips on his collar and paused, eyebrows raised slightly. “Captain,” she said and then glanced back inside the room. “Commander Wynter is inside, Sir.” She said, a slight reddening appearing on her cheeks before she walked away to resume her duties.

Inside the room, sitting on the edge of his desk was the Chief Engineer. Notably, the man was minus his tunic and in a plain white tank top. The wiry muscles of his arms and shoulders laid bare and a number of red looking marks, slowly fading, covered those same area’s. “Captain,” he said as he looked up while he turned his tunic the right way out, and began to put his arms through it to put it back on. “Please, come in. Coffee?”

Cochrane looked back at the retreating figure and then looked at the obviously out of uniform CE. With a slight cocking of his head to the side, he said “Am I intruding on something, Commander? I can always come back later if you are… preoccupied? I’d hate to interrupt a, uh… staff evaluation?”

Cochrane, CO

Max waves the Captain in, “No intrusion Sir, I don’t do staff performance assessments on a Tuesday.” He grinned and stood, slipping his tunic over his shoulders then doing it up. Then, he extended his hand to the man. Lieutenant Commander Maxwell Wynter, Captain.

In his other hand, he held up a small medical tool. “I got some minor burns from an overloaded conduit, nothing serious. However my wife is the Chief Medical Officer, you can imagine the disapproving looks and lecture if I wandered in there with another burn. NE Macphersen there is a trained medic, she knows how to handle her tools, and is more than qualified to treat minor burns. That way, I don’t need to lose time going to sickbay then having a discussion about being more careful tonight instead of, spending a nicer evening with my wife.” He grinned and slid the medical tool into a drawer, “Welcome to Engineering.”

Cochrane looked at the man and said flatly “But you of course report such minor occurrences to your spouse for keeping an accurate medical file, correct?” It was difficult to tell if the man was being serious, was still trying to figure out if what he saw is what he saw, or if he was just having a bit of fun at the expense of the Chief Engineer in situation and the obvious potential for misinterpretation.

Cochrane, CO

“Of course,” Max said while walking to the replicator. “Just, not right away. I leave it a few hours until we’ve had dinner, a drink or two and are watching a movie or relaxing and talking about our day. It’s hard to be angry at someone when your cuddling up to them on a couch watching a movie.” He shot a look at the CO and made himself a coffee, large and sweet with a definite smell of hazelnut coming from it. “Are you married, Captain? Coffee?”

Lt Cmdr Wynter, CE

“Coffee would be great, thank you. And no, not married. Came close once or twice, but I suppose Star Fleet had other ideas.” he said with a chuckle. “How long have you been on the Manhattan, Commander?”

Cochrane, CO

Max made another coffee, this one a plain no frills coffee that came with it’s own milk and sugar on the side on a small tray then returned to the desk and sat down. “Jasmine and I both joined the Manhattan right before she was assigned to the Delta Quadrant so pretty much from the start of all this,” he said, indicating the various schematics on display not only of the Manhattan, but also of the station that the Manhattan had been tasked with assisting with the setup and construction in whatever capacity they could. “As we have come across various conditions unique or more prevalent in the Delta Quadrant, we can provide the Starbase with a better idea of what kind of challenges it might face.”

Lt Cmdr Wynter, CE

“And what conditions have you encountered so far? And have our partners on the station been helpful?”

Cochrane, CO

“Most helpful,” Max reported, “it’s in their best interests to listen to what we have to say, otherwise they might be sucking vacuum next time a spatial anomaly pops up near them.” He reached over and took a PaDD out of a drawer and passed it over to the CO. On it, was a list of noted conditions and anomalies that had variations outside of the norm for the effects on a ships systems compared to what they had experienced back home. The list wasn’t large nor was it particularly dangerously significant but it obviously signified a lot of people-hours of work by the engineering and science teams testing the variations.
