Vorraye laughed a bit. “I can assure you I do not see ‘Bub’ or ‘Jerk’ coming out of my mouth. But Alex suits you. Raye is about all anyone calls me.” She moved to where the boxes were and glanced up at him, her head tilted slightly as she looked at him curiously. “Would you like some help unpacking? I’ll unwrap, you decorate?” She nodded to the box beside her without touching anything yet.

With a wink, she added, “Though as I look… ‘hey you’ may work on occasion as well. What do you think? Suggestions to holler my way?” She was teasing him but making it light hearted enough to not offend.

Cochrane remained seated, but smiled as he shook his head. “No, I can manage the unpacking. I appreciate the offer, though. As for you? I will instruct my crew to refer to you as Ms. Anders, as you are a civilian. In formal occasion, we could do the ‘Diplomat Anders’, if you like. But informally, if you like Raye, Raye it is. I’ll try to steer away from the ‘Hey you’. Might give people the wrong impression.” he added with a chuckle.

Vorraye smiled. “Raye is fine, Sir. And I wouldn’t want anyone getting wrong ideas.” She moved to sit across from him. “Is there anything in particular you desire of me when I am here? I know contacts are a pretty cut and dried, but anything you want in between times?”

She was glad he wasn’t one who treated her like a stuffed shirt pariah. She’d been with Captains, and Admirals, who thought she was either worthless window dressing, or a beck and call slave for everything they wanted done shy of fetching their caf drinks.

“Yes, there is. I’m glad you asked. We will be meeting with new races, that is pretty much a given. As the Chief Diplomatic Official on board, I would like you to prepare a debriefing for all Senior Staff once contact has been established and our preliminary dealings are done. Whatever you can glean from our interactions… cultural cues, predispositions, customs… anything that we can look back on as a kind of ‘primer’ for dealing with specific races. Also, I want you to try and get an opinion of the race from other species as well. All of this I want you to maintain in database. I would recommend coordinating with the Science and Engineering sections for this. We want to compile a full profile on everyone we meet. But here’s the catch. We need to keep that information locked down. I don’t want anyone other than yourself and the Senior Staff to have access. Any exception will have to go through me. Does that sound reasonable to you, Raye?”

Vorraye was relieved, actually, at being given an actual assignment. “I can do that. I will start with the species we know. Greetings, attire, and the appropriate notes with the knowledge already in the databases about each race. I can flag necessary readings for Senior Staff, if you wish. Basic greetings and immediate insults. And every new species will receive the same attention as well as Fleet Assessment reports as I receive them back. Is that what you were thinking?” She then remembered he wanted certain things locked down.

“And I can add the notes and pertinent information to be accessible by Senior staff only. The usual Fleet intel is available to anyone looking it up, of course. We can set the files in batches so if necessary, certain files like ‘greetings’, ‘appropriate attire’ and ‘insults’ can be made available to others without having to redact anything sensitive.” She realized there will be times the whole ship will need to be aware of certain protocols. But when not necessary, it could often be misconstrued and misinterpreted.

“Perfect. That is exactly what I was hoping for. And going forward, please note that you are considered Senior Staff. I don’t want anyone thinking that simply because you are not Star Fleet that you don’t hold a position of some authority on board the Manhattan.”
