Setting the tray down gently at her feet, Faye surveyed the Botanical Garden. Well, the space that would become their Botanical Garden. She couldn’t help but smile at the idea and was grateful the CSO had agreed so enthusiastically that they should convert the space as designated. At least here she could work on something that wasn’t involving a life and death situation and didn’t require any deception on her part. She also didn’t care if others wanted to help, so long as they let her have her own space to cultivate.

Sitting down on the deck in the middle of the cavernous space, she pulled out the large PADD from her satchel and laid it across her lap. With a stylus, she began sketching out layout ideas, letting her imagination pull from the all-too-clear memories of life on a colony and a self-sufficient settlement that cherished hard work and independence.

Within half an hour she was starting to feel like she had a good sense of what she wanted the place to look like. She was envisioning a circular path with ‘spokes’ branching off and dividing the room. Each section could be a different sort of bed, but Faye recognized that whatever they put in here would have to grow under reasonably similar climactic variable. In the middle she wanted a little forest canopy with a woodland garden and nook and crannies a person could seek out for quiet. She could see people meditating there, though she smirked at the idea that others would likely take advantage of it for romantic interludes. To each their own.

One of the biggest parts of the garden was a double-wide spoke that would serve as a food garden. This, more than anything, was the piece of her previous life she wanted to bring here. That and the small pond. It wasn’t going to be the lake or anything, but it was a happy reminder and the sound of water was always a welcome thing in a space like this.

After awhile, Faye’s sketches came together in a cohesive plan. Moving to a crate, she took out some small metal objects and began laying out the paths so that she could see how big each section really was and make adjustments as necessary. It would take awhile, but she found this sort of menial work rather meditative, just like she had all those hours of connecting optical cables together. At least this wasn’t going to result in electrocution or severe burns.

Being an engineer who was small and could easily fit in the smaller places of the ship, Kaia could often be found in the nooks and crannies which were usually inaccessible after the ship was fully constructed. She had found some interesting things this way, including a cool little hollow between two bulkheads with a small collection of moonshines and blankets.

Today it led her to a room on deck four which seemed to already have an occupant. The small alien slipped out of an access hatch and landed on the ground nearly silently, watching the woman working and waiting for Faye to notice her.

Standing upright, Faye stood with her arms akimbo and eyed the one section. Out of the corner of her eye she spied movement and turned her head ever so slightly in that direction. “You know, this isn’t a secret project or anything. Unlike my other work, it doesn’t require stealth,” she said idly, taking a step back to get a better sense of the entire space as it was laid out so far.
