Standing upright, Faye stood with her arms akimbo and eyed the one section. Out of the corner of her eye she spied movement and turned her head ever so slightly in that direction. “You know, this isn’t a secret project or anything. Unlike my other work, it doesn’t require stealth,” she said idly, taking a step back to get a better sense of the entire space as it was laid out so far.

The small ensign let out a little purring noise. She crouched, her hands resting on the ground, and looked around at the little project Faye was working on. “You are Lt. Calloway?” she asked. As was surprisingly common among her species, she traipsed across the floor on all fours until she had reached next to the woman, then stood up. Head tilted, she looked at what she was working at, although her lower vantage point made it rather difficult to see.

“I am. We met in Engineering a little while ago,” Faye said, her stormy grey-green eyes assessing the engineer. She then shifted her attention back to the outlines created by her metal markers. “I’m laying out the lines of the garden the CSO gave me permission to build. Just sitting with the design for a bit first before I decide if it’s final or not.” She pointed to the larger section towards the back in the centre. “That’s going to be built up to be a bit of a hill and the beds around it will be terraced. Figured we could be a tree there and create sort of a nook for people to hang out in. There’ll be vegetables and fruit in some beds and the rest will be flowers and shrubs and whatever else pops into my head. Or whatever else people feel like contributing.”

Kaia nodded, trying to picture it. She looked at the design, tilting her head. “Is there anything I can do to help?” She asked, blinking a few times.

Calloway nodded. “Sure. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done. Retaining walls, raised beds. Not to mention the irrigation and water recycling. I wanted to get the design settled before I brought it to Chief Wynter so he doesn’t freak out .” She cast her gaze at Kaia. “He’s not a man that likes those kinds of surprises.”

Kaia nodded quietly. “Does that mean you want to have it actually started, or have settled on a design?” She chuckled slightly. “I can help if engineering type things need to be considered. I am not certain I would be of much help in the physical construction. Humans build things on such a larger scale than what my people are accustomed to,” she reflected.

She eyed the engineer critically. “There’s plenty you could help with. I mean, you work on a starship after all. That’s a pretty big construct in of itself. And not all of the garden will be about the retaining walls and raised bed frames. There’s irrigation, pathways, planting. Plenty of things people can help with if they like.,” Faye said. “So, to answer your first question, both. I need to make sure the design is sound for the function of the ship, and then help getting it going.”

Kaia grinned slightly. “I do enjoy engineering. I’m generally used by the Chief to get into small spaces that human-sized people have trouble with. Like that access tube I was crawling around in. I wish I could explore other vessels. Like a vulcan ship or a klingon one!”
She realized she had gotten side tracked and smiled sheepishly.
