The sickbay doors hissed open as Ensign Shon Baht stepped through the threshold for his duty shift, arms held out to his sides and hips swaying to display the wide cloth band with a large metal buckle wrapped around his waist. Catching sight of his nearest coworker, Shon completed a dramatized 360 degree spin to show off his new apparel as he approached.

“Giiiiiiiiirl, look what the cat just dragged in,” Yvonne Johnson said in a deep sassy tone. Her hand reached out to the side whacking the air until it found Jasmine’s arm. Once it did she rapidly tapped her arm until the CMO stopped doing what she was doing and turned her attention onto the duty nurse.

“Huh,” Jasmine said not understanding what was going on. Yvonne pulled Jasmine’s sleeve down so that the doc’s body was bent in the direction Yvonne wanted her to look. Yvonne’s eyes were locked onto the newest arrival in sickbay. “What in god’s green earth is he doin’? Is he tied up?” The duty nurse has an incredulous look with one eyebrow raised high in almost a suspicious manner.

Check out this ‘gait belt’ I just replicated from old Earth medical records! Not only is it quite the fashion statement (and very slimming), BUT it’s also super helpful for moving weakened crew without throwing out your back! Want to try it on? I have no idea why these things went out of style, they’re great!”

Shon pointed down at his waist with both hands and looked at his victim expectantly, wiggling his hips a little to send the loosely-adorned royal blue belt bouncing.

“No I think he is our new ensign,” Jasmine smiled at the man standing in the center of the room. “And he is wearing a gait belt. Remember Ensigns Bambi Parker and Candy Parker the buxom bridge twins,” Jasmine started to explain.

“Bridge Twin,” Yvonne sniffed in an annoyed manner. “Honey you mean the cougar twins that went after any man with or without the pips,” she crossed her arms looking at Jasmine as if she were lying. “You mean those two twins that were transferred to the Ogawa because they threw their backs out in the limbo competition trying to get your husband to notice them in those coconut tops,” she added pantomime as if Jasmine needed it. “Those Bambi and Candy Parker twins?”

“Yes,” she rolled her eyes at her head nurse, “but more importantly those two straps we used to walk them around the sickbay,” she pointed to the ensign, ” those were the redneck version of a gait trainer so be nice,” Jasmine pointed a finger at Yvonne.

Turning her attention to Baht, Jasmine crossed the room with a smile. “So are you Baht or Bat,” she tried to figure out how his last name was pronounced from the spelling.

“Welcome to the Manhattan,” she said warmly.

Lt. Jasmine Wynter CMO

Shon turned from the poor ensign he had ambushed as Jasmine approach, eyes widening slightly in recognition. “Doctor Wynter!” Shon exclaimed with a smile, “I was wondering when we would run into each other!” He offered a playful half-bow, bending at the waist with his right hand clasping his abdomen while the left swept outwards.

Shon displayed a good-natured grin as he righted himself, and moved to meet Jasmine halfway. “It’s pronounced ‘baht’ like ‘baa-t’ or maybe ‘bought.’ I’m not particularly concerned about it.” He continued closing the distance, and at this point it was unclear if he was moving in for a handshake or a hug. “Thank you for the warm welcome, it’s so good to meet you!”

After whatever form of physical greeting Jasmine initiated (or avoided), Shon took a step back and bent sideways at his hips to lean around Doctor Wynter and offer a small wave and a smile to Yvonne before turning his attention back to the chief medical officer.

Jasmine stuck out her hand, “I also love your initiative with thinking outside of the box. Starfleet teaches you the facts but the Manhattan,” she let out a laugh, “the Manhattan teaches you about life. A few months ago we had an issue with a kid who got their head stuck in a console. All the medical tech in the world was useless but a gallon of cooking oil solved that issue. Wanna go get a cup of coffee and meet in a more relaxed setting,” she hooked a thumb at her office?

Shon shook Jasmine’s hand warmly, clasping it with his left as he did so and smiling as he maintained eye contact. Shon snickered at Jasmine’s anecdote and nodded at her offer to move to the office. “Of course! I hope I didn’t interrupt, but if you have time now I am more than happy to chat!”

(Ensign Baht, Medical)

Jasmine led the ensign to her office and gestured from him to take any of the seats available. Moving to the replicator she programmed her favorite beverage. “So what’s your poison,” she asked the new doctor in her department.

Ensign Baht perched on one of the chairs in front of the doctor’s desk, crossing one leg over the other and clasping his blue hands around his raised knee. “Oh, orange juice would be splendid, thank you Doctor Wynter. I’ve managed to avoid regularly drinking coffee or tea so far… although it remains to be seen if my assignment to the Manhattan is what finally makes me take up the habit,” he jested with a good-natured smile.

Grabbing the drinks she settled back in her chair and propped up her feet on the edge of the desk. She had never really put a lot of heavy stock on meetings like this after a first general impression. Baht seemed laid back and not someone she would have to worry about every word or action with. “So you wanna tell me something I am not gonna find in your file about yourself,” she asked taking a sip of her coffee.

Shon took a swig of the orange juice with a small ‘ah’ escaping his lips as he withdrew the glass. He titled his head slightly to one side, considering Jasmine’s request. “I starred as Fiyero in a production of the historical human play ‘Wicked’ during my senior year of secondary school in San Francisco! My rendition of ‘Dancing through Life’ received a standing ovation, if you don’t mind my bragging,” Shon puffed up his chest a little as he spoke. “I have a love for theatre. I find it so much more involved than holodeck scenarios, to be honest.”

“Oh my god yes. I hate holodecks and try whenever I can to avoid them but real life does have it’s drawbacks,”

Suddenly, the click of the comm announced an incoming message.

=/\= Sickbay, this is Lieutenant Commander Wynter. I have a Medical Emergency, prepare for an incoming emergency site-to-site transport =/\=

=/\=Understood=/\= Jasmine replied jumping up from her seat. She didn’t signal for Baht to follow but she knew he would. Medical emergencies requests brought everyone out of the woodwork. She hadn’t had time to ask about his specialty but all doctors had one. That is why it was all hands on deck. Jasmine didn’t fret over rank or whose neck was the shiniest in times like this. The most qualiied person took the case once they knew what it was.

Seconds later, the swirl and sound of a transporter sounded in the main sickbay as Max appeared, crouched low and holding a bundle in his arms. He looked up and the site of him made a number of the nurses hold their breath, likely for the exclamation of concern that would come from Jasmine followed closely by the statement that the Chief Engineer was being careless and a fool again.

“What the hail,” Yvonne yelled out. “Jasmine your man was on fire,” she said in her sassy tone putting her hands on her hips. “And I ain’t talking handsome.” Yvonne Washington had taken every class known to man for her profession but nothing prepared her for the crazy arse Mintaran people with their check list o’ love and you ain’t readen my mind-brain anatomy. This event, however, was certainly going on the list to the Sunday comm calls to her cousins Lavonne and Sharevonne Washington stationed on the USS Ogawa. She let out a mmhhmm hmmm hmmm sound as she sat back down seeing the CMO burst from her office.

“What,” Jasmine grabbed the fire extinguisher out of instinct looking at Max.

“Girl I said was on fire not actively in flames,” she came around the desk quickly and headed to the hypo section of the sick bay. Pulling various vials and creams from the cabinet, Yvonne muttered under her breath.

“Max,” Jasmine yelled dropped the cylindrical fire suppression canister and hurrying over to him.

Max was, smoking. His yellow Operations/Engineering tunic was burnt in several places, mainly the chest and his hair was standing on end and singed like he had stuck his finger in a power socket, and he was missing most of one eyebrow. His sleeves were rolled up, and blackened and his arms bore the red scorch marks and blisters of burns from his hands to past his elbows like he had stuck them into a furnace and quickly withdrawn them. In his arms a small round bundle lay curled up, about the size of a dinner plate and a finger thick. It was furry, clearly and it was also badly singed and smoking.

“I need help,” Max said as he came to his feet shakily, revealing that he was only burnt from his waist up.

Lt Cmdr Wynter, Chief Engineer

“What happened? Baht take the baby,” she ordered looping an arm around Max’s waist. “Bed’s six and seven,” she called out. By taking those beds, both Jasmine and Shon would be able to get information about the event simultaneously since they were practically next to each other. At the moment, Jasmine was not concerned about how or why Max had a baby.

Lt. Jasmine Wynter CMO

OOC: Sorry it took me a bit to get to this, the grad school semester started this week so I’ve been preoccupied!
Ben

IC: Ensign Baht had followed Doctor Wynter out of the office with purposeful strides, but he was admittedly unsure about his place in the crisis. Jasmine had just met him. He did not quite expect her to trust him so easily with direct involvement in the medical emergency. So when the chief medical officer told him to take the baby, Shon blinked in surprise. Then, he jumped into action.

Ensign Baht swooped in to take the bundle from Max, being especially gentle as they made the transfer. Holding his breath, Shon pulled back the cloth to inspect the baby briefly. He gulped with relief when he saw that the infant was still alive. With careful, measured steps, Shon approached bed seven. He laid the newborn on the pad lightly and began slowly peeling away the bundle to get a better look at their injuries.
