Jasmine let out a deep laugh that shook her entire body as she opened the box. Sliding the eye patch over one eye she held out her hands in a ta-da pose. “So what do you think,” Jasmine turned her head modeling the new apparel fishing for a compliment.

“Just you watch, you’ll start a new fashion trend,” Calloway said, her eyes glimmering. Wynter’s response seemed to be an acceptance of the apology and for that Faye was grateful. “We can call you One-Eyed-Wynter, and all shall fear you!” she added dramatically.

“So Max told me you are planting a garden on the ship,” Jasmine asked. The rumor that this was happening had spread through the mess hall fast enough and the fact the engineering chief was helping gave her a lot more information than most. “I am not saying I am not a fan of the idea but what brought it about,” Jasmine asked taking a sip of her coffee.

Faye wasn’t exactly surprised people were talking about it, but on the other hand her observations so far were that few people seemed interested. Which was fine by her. She shrugged. “A few things, I guess.” She chewed on her lower lip for a moment before pulling out a chair and accepting the unsaid invitation to stay and chat. “I used to do a lot of gardening when I was little. Everyone on the colony had to pitch in, or else we didn’t eat. That was the life on the edge of the Federation for you. But there’s something… calming about it. After the explosion in the jefferies tube I was… taken back… far too much, to some events that happened a little while ago.” She tapped her head with two of her fingers. “As I’m sure you probably know, my BPD can be more difficult to deal with after difficult events, trauma, etcetera. I’ve been looking for a non-medication way to try and…” What was it that she was looking for anyway? Peace? “I just need something to do that isn’t punching things out on the holodeck or in the gym. Something therapeutic. So I want to grow things. And we have a whole section of the science department that is meant for a garden if we want one, so I asked the Chief of Science what she thought and she gave me the thumbs up. So… I’m building a garden,” she said with a small smile.

“What kind? Flowers or vegetables,” Faye asked taking a sip of her coffee. “I love gardens and flowers but my mother called me the Darwin Gardener. This simply meant I stuck you in the ground and you were on your own. Survival of the fittest,” Jasmine let out a laugh. “The only good thing is my garden always looked spectacular; however, it should have because I treated everything in it like an annual. Drooping stems…you’re gone. Brown leaves…you’re outta here,” Jasmine laughed as she recanted her story. “It was pure cheating but not lying,” she held up a finger. “I told everyone that is what I did so no one ever thought I had a green thumb.”

Faye smirked. “There will be both in this one. The central areas will be pure relaxation spots and the outside will for food production. I wanted a place where people could just hang out, but I like the satisfaction of growing food and cooking something you actually enjoy with the results of your hard work. It’s…” She trailed off, letting her mind drift to those tenuous memories that existed in the murkiness of her childhood. There had been good times. People wouldn’t know it from their usual interactions with her, but there had indeed been some happy times, even if they felt fleeting some days.

“It’s what,” Jasmine asked in a gentle tone. Faye was a hard person to get to know. At times like this she seemed ready and eager to make connections but other times her past seemed to make her put up a force field placing her almost in a state of isolation. Faye was amazing at her job but life was more than just a job. Jasmine knew this. If it wasn’t for Max, Jasmine’s life would be dull. She couldn’t imagine working a full shift and then coming home to an empty home with just four walls for company. Maybe Faye would open up to her. Jasmine hoped she would. Everyone could use a friend or two even if they were as different as night and day.

A very clearly disoriented Barvan entered sickbay, very clearly looking for medical attention.
