“It’s what,” Jasmine asked in a gentle tone. Faye was a hard person to get to know. At times like this she seemed ready and eager to make connections but other times her past seemed to make her put up a force field placing her almost in a state of isolation. Faye was amazing at her job but life was more than just a job. Jasmine knew this. If it wasn’t for Max, Jasmine’s life would be dull. She couldn’t imagine working a full shift and then coming home to an empty home with just four walls for company. Maybe Faye would open up to her. Jasmine hoped she would. Everyone could use a friend or two even if they were as different as night and day.

“Calming. Rewarding,” Faye said, her tone almost reverent. “When I worked in the communal gardens as a kid, it felt like for a time everything was good. All the chaos outside of our little space disappeared and I could just… be. I’m trying to find ways back to that, because I haven’t found anything that works so well as getting my hands dirty in some soil, and after a time, harvesting food that I hand in growing.”

“Have you ever had anything like that?” Calloway asked.

“Yes when I hike,” Jasmine said but not before thinking about her response and the way Faye would take it. “Okay, so hiking is really not the correct term. I mean people say that all the time but I don’t know a single person that has the gear. Boots, hat, canteen, walking cane,” she rattled off a few things. “Generally I find that when you get to the heart of the hiking obsession it is usually just you and your girlfriend looping the park in spandex with a latte harping on how the men are arseholes and your boss sucks. Works well for Celina and I because we are not in the same department. She rants about Jack and how the man in the big seat is not the man she comes home to in her recliner. I counter with how Max can fix the warp core in three minutes flat from exploding but still can’t manage to fix the replicator in our quarters until I threaten no sex for a week. I do know the peace you are talking about though,” she nodded at Faye. “It’s nice when you can have it.”

“It’s so fleeting sometimes. The only other time I feel like nothing else matters is well”-Faye grinned slightly-“when I’m bashing things in the gym or the holodeck. Holodeck is better, because you can really go to town with a weapon and not worry about the walls. Or people.” She shrugged. “It’s my method of anger management, for all the good it does me.”

“I see the draw but always get my arse kicked. I got a D in the self-defense required course at the academy. Then I made a friend who takes any form of friendly competition and turns it into a guerrilla match. I am like that sick, young, zebra with three legs and half a hoof when I spar but it does feel good to hit someone at times,” Jasmine took a deep drink of her coffee after trying to imitate the highly uncombative animal she just described.

Calloway snorted. “You wouldn’t have lasted two seconds as a Masquis. Shame. We could have used a few more people with a sense of humour,” she said.

“If you ever want to try and be less like an animal going to be slaughtered, let me know. I can’t promise I’ll teach you stuff in the Starfleet combat book, but you’ll have a few tricks up your sleeve.” Faye shrugged. “Also can’t promise you won’t be cursing me for the first few sessions. It’s going to hurt.”
