With all her check-in’s finished and her belongings unpacked, Kiama decided to wander around the ship some more before her next shift would start. She had already poked around some of the science labs, but only the one’s in the vicinity of the main lab. Though that of course still left a fair number of labs unexplored. Unable to decide where to go next she had made a list, told the computer to put them in a random order and then - with her eyes closed - pointed at one of them. Definitely not a scientific approach, but one that worked for her nevertheless.

How eerie, the mocha skinned Betazoid mused as she wandered down the corridor of Deck 13. She had never been in this area of a starship before and the fact that she was the only one in sight made a slight, but pleasant shiver run down her spine. She just had to be careful not to let her Imagination run wild. It was far to easy right now to imagine ghosts or the Borg suddenly appearing in the corridor with her.

After a couple more minutes of slowly walking down the corridor, Kiama arrived at her destination: Computer Science Lab 2. With excitement and curiosity written all over her face, she walked purposefully towards the door. And then right into them as they wouldn’t open. Something she certainly had not expected. “Ouch,” she mumbled as she took a step backwards and looked confused at the door and then the PaDD with her list of labs; all the while gently rubbing her forehead. “Why won’t you open? I’m a scientist and you are a science lab. So I should be able to get inside, shouldn’t I?” she asked, looking straight at the door in front of her.

“Because you don’t have the proper authorization,” a calm voice said behind Kiama.

For a brief moment Kiama just kept looking at the door to the computer science lab. Surely, the door did not just speak to me, did it? Or maybe I hit my head harder than I thought, she thought, before realizing that the voice had come from behind her and not in front of her.

Faye stood there in her sciences blue uniform, arms akimbo. She eyed the other scientist, her stormy grey-green eyes assessing, judging, though her face gave no indication as to her mood. Inwardly, she was a bit irritated but was clearly doing her best to keep it under wraps.

Turning around, she flashed a bright smile at her fellow officer. “Sorry, I had no idea that any of the labs are restricted,” the Betazoid said. She could sense Faye’s irritation, but hoped that she hadn’t left a too bad first impression. “I’m Ensign Kiama Naim. I’m new to the ship and wanted to have a look around all the science labs,” she added, hoping that that explanation would ease the other woman’s irritation.

“Clearly,” Faye said dryly. “Well, unfortunately, this is about you’ll see of this lab. It’s restricted. though I think you’ve figured that out already,” she added, a tiny smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth.

A voice with a slight British accent came from behind both. “Lieutenant Calloway. I do not think that is how we welcome new crew to the Manhattan.” Standing behind them was a tallish man with black hair, icy blue eyes, and a hawk-like nose. Captain pips shined brightly on his collar. “Ensign. I am Captain Cochrane. Welcome aboard. I’m sorry, but the Lieutenant is correct. This particular lab has been restricted to essential personnel only. I hope that doesn’t dampen your enthusiasm for being here. The Manhattan is a big ship, and she has lots of interesting places you can access.”

At the sound of the voice, the scientist turned around, looking a little startled. She had been so focused on Faye that she hadn’t consciously registered his approach. “Thank you, Captain,” Kiama replied with a soft smile behind which she tried to hide her surprise and awe to find herself face to face with the Captain so shortly after setting foot onto the Manhattan. “And you don’t have to worry about that. There is very little that dampens my enthusiasm,” she continued emphatically, catching herself by surprise and thus then falling silent very suddenly.

“Hey, I was being nice,” Faye said, the smirk shifting into a smile as she turned to face the captain. “I didn’t yell, I didn’t threaten to beat anyone up. I mean, let’s be honest, I don’t think we’re expecting me to be standing about with welcome balloons, now are we?”

Watching the Captain and Faye, Kiama felt a cold shiver run down her spine as she heard the other woman talking about yelling and threatening to beat someone up. She was most definitely grateful that neither had been the way she was “greeted” by her. Yet all that made her only more curious. What was behind that door that explained and justified all this? She was longing to know, but pushed that to the back of her mind, knowing full-well that she wasn’t allowed to know and that she’d get in serious trouble, if she started to poke around and was caught; which was bound to happen.

Cochrane smiled a friendly smile at Calloway, and said “Point taken. If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were getting soft, Lieutenant.” with a wry smile on his face. Turning to the Ensign, he said “I’m glad to hear you say that, Ensign. This ship has been taking the proverbial wind out of people’s sails recently. I hope your excitement is contagious. I mean, we do have a mostly unexplored Quadrant of the galaxy in front of us and we are on board one the finest science vessels the fleet has to offer. I’d say that would be cause for excitement. Wouldn’t you two agree?”
