OOC: This is outside of the main sim events …

IC: The Runabout Collins was being flung about by the eddies of the wormhole. It was on its way to the new Federation outpost in the Delta Quadrant. As well as supplies to aid in the construction of the space station, it held some new personnel, mostly for the station, but there was also a new crewmember for the Manhattan on board: Dr Karla Reyes.

Right now, she had her medical tricorder out, scanning one of the NEs on board who was taking the trip a lot worse than herself.

“Ensign, you were on an Academy training vesssel, and then Earth spacedock. You probably haven’t been through a bad storm on an ocean on Earth before. I am really not surprised you are feeling sick,” Karla commented, adjusting a setting on her hypospray, before touching it to the NE’s neck, “that should ICLyou feel better, Ensign.”

The Ensign nodded, and the non-Orion’s face stopped looking so green. Karla move around, checking the others on board, before returning to her seat, alongside a Cardassian, dressed in the uniform of a Cardassian Medical Doctor.

“This anything like the badlands, Durn?” Karla asked him as she sat once more. His actual name was Durnit, but they had pet names for each other - his was Durn, and hers was Karl.

Durnit reached out a hand to steady her before replying, “quite similar, actually, Karl. I went through the Bajoran wormhole a few times back in the day, and that was a lot more pleasant than this one.” Karla gave his hand a quick squeeze and him a kiss. Karla had been in Starfleet for a short time, having spent years in the civilian medical field, firstly on Earth and then elsewhere. Her career resulted in her getting married twice, firstly to a Betazoid, then to a Vulcan. She had three children - half Betazoid twins and a half Vulcan son. After the death of her second husband, she decided to work for a joint Federation-Cardassian medical facility, where she met Durnit. She was older now, but the passions ran as strongly for her as they did in her younger days.

Now, they were on their way to new postings, she to the Manhattan, where she’d be part of the medical staff, and him to the space station where he’s join the multi disciplined and multi species team of Doctors. She hoped they’d see each other from time to time.

The runabout continued its trip.

Karla watched Durnit as the Cardassian snored softly, then as the pilot of the runabout indicated that they were nearing the end of their trip through the wormhole, she gently nudged him.

“You can wake up now, Durn,” Karla told her Cardassian boyfriend softly.

“I wasn’t asleep,” Durnit protested, his eyes snapping open, “just resting my eyes.”

“They were closed for 1/2 an hour or so,” Karla told him, smiling gently, “not to mention the snoring.”

“I was clearing my throat …” came the response.

“For as long as you closed your eyes,” she answered, though her tone suggested she didn’t believe him, “never mind, I hope you’ve successfully cleared your throat and rested your eyes. We’re almost through the wormhole into the Delta Quadrant.”

“Finally,” Durnit said, “I hope hat we can …”

Whatever it was that he was hoping for was left unsaid as the opening of the wormhole at the Delta Quadrant end came into view and all eyes turned to the view. The constellations were different to back home, of course, and the space station being built was still very much in construction phase with the variety of construction vessels and scaffolding around it. It seemed that part of it was already in operation as the infrastructure around the middle of the station was lit up, and it seemed ships were docked there, rather than bringing along repairs.

“There have been some Hirogen in the area,” the pilot reported, “the Manhattan is dealing with them. Those of you who have been assigned to the Manhattan, you’ve got some downtime on the station, I’m sure the crew of the station would appreciate any assistance you can provide.”

“The Manhattan might need my services,” Karla commented, “especially if they are ‘dealing’ with Hirogen.”

“Be that as it may, Lieutenant, I am responsible for the safety of this craft and all on board,” the pilot said, “my orders are clear, deliver you to the station. From there, I’m to ferry workers back through the wormhole.”

“I guess that I’m stuck on the station for the time being then, whatever will I do to keep myself busy?” she looked archly at Durnit.

“Help in the infirmary?” he suggested with a smirk.

“I suppose that I could do that, or I could … inspect your quarters there, particularly the bed and ensure it meets Starfleet standards,” Karla answered calmly.

“What a good idea,” Durnit replied, “funny I never thought of that.”

“Why don’t you two get a room,” the pilot said as he kept his eye on what was above them as the wormhole eddies buffeted the runabout and manipulated the controls on
the helm.
