“Ingenious. I’m sort of surprised that no one hasn’t done this in the past,” Walker said looking over Faye’s shoulder. “How much does it slow the data transfer down by? I’m assuming it doesn’t add much of a buffer, or it would start to impact most of the ship systems.”

Why had no one ever put a system in place to easily kill the processes. It was almost as if the designers had forgotten the idea of computer intrusion into the systems. But he also wondered if there was a way to overwhelm the system, so it couldn’t shut everything off.

Faye turned a corner, and continued over to their target junction. “Well, it’s not as much as you might think. Only fifteen percent, because if we do much more than that, the lag in the various systems would make working and living on the ship rather annoying. Mostly, it’s only going to fire if it detects anything unusual, but there are some programmed aspects of the firewall that allow for viruses that might try to mimic good data.” Calloway came to a stop at the manifold and pushed to antigrav cart slightly ahead of her, creating some work space. She looked back at Darrach. “That’s where you folks still need me. I’ll be monitoring data streams, not for the content, but for markers that it’s been tampered with, or contains structures that have the capacity to alter our systems. I’m not reading the actual sensor data, or people’s mail, but instead it’s more like I’m just giving everything a general health scan with skills that are uniquely adapted for data incursions.”

She smirked slightly as she brought the device out again and offered it to him. “Hold my baby for me, will you?”

Walker nodded as he took the device, “Sure thing. That makes sense, it would be next to impossible to actually scan every single piece of data flowing through the system.”

“Would you believe that I’ve been doing this kind of work since I was a teenager?” she said, feeling rather amused.

Walker chuckled, “after what I’ve seen over the years, it definitely is believable. But what got you into this type of work so young?”

“My parents,” Faye said casually as she undid a panel and shut down the power to that section. “I grew up on Tracken II, in what would become the DMZ. We had our nice quiet little life, but there was always the spectre of violence hovering on the outside. My dad was a computer tech in a previous life and he taught me everything he knew about systems. When things got heated and the treaty was signed, well, it became a necessary skill.” She glanced at Darrach. He didn’t know? That seemed strange to her given that she felt she moved through life surrounded by gossip. It was a reminder that she just wasn’t that special. “My parents joined the Maquis.”

Walker nodded, “That would definitely explain it.” Keeping an eye over her shoulder so he could keep up with what she was doing, he leaned back against the wall. “Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t agree with what how they operated, but I was definitely not happy to hear how the Dominion came through and wiped out all of the colonies.

Faye tensed slightly but focused on making sure a component was on correctly.

“I had friends who made the jump. While I didn’t agree with what they did, I definitely understood their reasoning. And I could definitely respect their efforts to live the life they wanted.”

Shifting the device to his off hand, he pulled out his tricorder and looked at the adjustments she was making. “I hope that they didn’t end up putting you on the front lines though.”

“Didn’t have,” Calloway said bluntly. “The front lines came to us.” She looked away from Darrach for a moment. “Those destroyed colonies? Mine was one of them.”

Faye held out a hand for the device. “We’re ready for it now. I can do this part myself, but having an extra set of hands to feed the cabling makes it much easier,” she said.

~Faye Calloway, Data Scientist

“I’m sorry to hear that,” he said as he passed the device over to her. “Just point to which cable’s you want and I will feed them to you.”

Walker could tell that he had gotten a bit to close to home. The last thing he needed was her to clam up right as she was finally starting to work with him. “So, I’m sure you’ve had some interesting postings during your time in Starfleet. Any that you can actually talk about?”
