“I see the draw but always get my arse kicked. I got a D in the self-defense required course at the academy. Then I made a friend who takes any form of friendly competition and turns it into a guerrilla match. I am like that sick, young, zebra with three legs and half a hoof when I spar but it does feel good to hit someone at times,” Jasmine took a deep drink of her coffee after trying to imitate the highly uncombative animal she just described.

Calloway snorted. “You wouldn’t have lasted two seconds as a Maquis. Shame. We could have used a few more people with a sense of humour,” she said.

“If you ever want to try and be less like an animal going to be slaughtered, let me know. I can’t promise I’ll teach you stuff in the Starfleet combat book, but you’ll have a few tricks up your sleeve.” Faye shrugged. “Also can’t promise you won’t be cursing me for the first few sessions. It’s going to hurt.”

“Deal,” she smiled at Faye. This side of Faye was nice. It was often hidden though under a shield of wariness and a cloak of suspicion. Jasmine didn’t blame her for coming off as aloof. After the little bit Faye shared and the parts of her medical Jasmine could read, Faye had had a rough go of it. At least she was opening up to the crew now. Everyone needed a home. Maybe Faye finally found hers. “So do you have any family?”

The question, so basic, so universal, caught her off guard. Slightly wide eyed, her mouth opened to say something but nothing came out. It wasn’t like she hadn’t been asked the same exact thing recently, but the conversation had already been in that general area. “Uh, not really. Dominion killed everyone I knew, including my father, and my mother disappeared the year before. Last I heard she had returned to the the Alpha Quadrant after being in the Delta Quadrant on the Voyager, but…” Faye shrugged. “I haven’t heard from her and there’s no trace of her, so either she doesn’t know I’m alive or doesn’t care enough to bother.”

Faye brushed the thoughts in the air with a careless gesture of her hand. “Please tell me you have a better family picture than mine…”
