“For sure,” Shon said with a nod as he swallowed another spoonful of his lunch. “Speaking of the current mission… Have you heard what people are saying? The planet we’re going to help has purposefully regressed their technology, and we’ll have to do the same while we’re on the planet…” He waved his spoon in the air. “Don’t get me wrong, there’s an art to old-school medicine, but why wouldn’t you want to use dermal regenerators, for example, if you could?”

“Yes, I have. It all sounds fascinating and … disturbing,” Kiama replied. “I can’t imagine voluntarily turning the time back and not using all the knowledge and technology we have especially in medicine. I mean, sure, I see the romantic idea of living a simpler life without modern technology. And there is something about getting back in touch with the nature and all. But when it comes to medicine, I’m out,” she continued and then fell silent again and instead focused on her food, still eating just one macaroni or small peace of chicken at a time. She was lost in thoughts, or rater got lost down memory lane. And while she tried to keep her emotions both shielded and not visible on her face, Shon might be able to detected sadness and maybe even a hint of fear if he looked closely enough.

“Exactly!” Shon said as he threw his hands in the air dramatically. “I can only imagine the public health crises they must have that could easily be prevented. I’m going to give them a piece of my mind when we get down there, let me…” Shon trailed off as he saw Kiama’s expression, “tell you…” He softened his tone considerably. “Hey, are you okay?” he asked gently, concern in his eyes.

(Ensign Baht, Medical)

“Hm?” Kiama looked and blinked and few times before answering Shon’s question. “I’m sorry, my brain took me down memory lane … This mission … these people … I don’t understand why they would do this voluntarily,” she continued in a soft voice. “Then again, maybe it’s not as bad as we, as I am imagining. I guess we’ll find out sooner or later.” As she said that, her usual smile was back in place, though it didn’t fully reach her eyes.

Shon nodded with a twinge of hesitation, as he could not help but wonder what had made Kiama change her demeanor momentarily and if he should change the subject. “As long as they don’t have the types of problems that usually plague pre-warp species we’ll be fine. If we drop into a war zone that’ll definitely complicate things,” Shon said bitterly with uncharacteristic cynicism.

“I sure hope so,” Kiama said with a soft sigh, “I have already had enough war zone experiences to last me a lifetime. So I could happily live without adding more to it.” Under her breath she added, “Especially now that I’m not a child anymore.” Shaking her head, she continued at normal volume, “Though I suspect that the Captain would have mentioned it right way if we were to entre a war zone. I mean, yes, I don’t know him well, but he doesn’t come across as someone who would hold that kind of information back. Not to mention that I would expect more tension and all from him and the rest of the senior staff if this mission would involve beaming down into a big conflict.”
