Faye couldn’t help but be slightly amused at Naim’s embarrassment. “Yeah well, those organisms with brains are the ones I’m actually worried about. Data is data, but it’s sent and corrupted by methods that those brains devise. Not only do I have to work on the technical side, I have to think about the psychology of people I’ve never met to make sure I have us prepared for anything.”

“Fair point,” Kiama admitted with a nod. “Your work surely sounds intriguing and very complex. It’s like … being a psychoanalyst and computer specialist at the same time.”

~Ensign Naim, Scientist

Faye snorted. “Almost, but I’m not allowed to make jokes about craziness, but suffice to say I don’t think you want me psychoanalyzing *anything,” she said with a firther amused grin.

Calloway glanced at Cochrane. “You know, all that work sounds like a dual job. Who do I talk to about a raise around here?” she deadpanned.

~Faye Calloway, Data Specialist

Cochrane returned her glance and said “You should ask the guy in charge. I’d be careful, though. I hear he can be a right terror when someone brings up budgetary and fiduciary additions.” in the flattest manner possible. Turning back to the Ensign, he said “So tell me, Ensign. What are you looking forward to the most about being here… and by ‘here’ I mean both the ship and the Quadrant.”

Cochrane, CO

Faye simply grinned slightly at the CO

“Do you want the short or long answer, Captain?” Naim asked in reply.

“Oh, I’m a big fan of long answers, Ensign.” Cochrane said sarcastically. “But in this case, you choose.”

With a nod, the scientist replied, “I’m biggest passion has always been neuroscience, but exobiology is just as fascinating. And while I want to learn and see as much as possible while we’re out here, it’s those two fields I’m most excited about deepening my knowledge. There is so much out there we have no idea about. So many mysteries to uncover.” Her black eyes were sparkling and her whole face was lit up in excitement. And without noticing it, she slipped into a long speech about different brain structures and brain waves, about different delta quadrant species she so far had only read about and how much she’d love to learn more bout them. She mused about what else they might encounter. All the while using more and more specific terminology and gesturing with her hands a lot. And to both Cochrane and Calloway it would probably be obvious very quickly that she’d talk forever if neither of them interrupted her.

Oh boy! Faye could keep up, but she just blinked at Naim, not entirely sure what to think and, to prove a measure of growth, she managed to say nothing rather than something she might regret. Point for me, Calloway thought.

After several minutes of scientific jargon, quoting of obscure articles and research papers, and gestures that would put an Italian Thanksgiving dinner party to shame, Cochrane smiled broadly and said “Wait wait wait. Hold up, Ensign. You lost me around ‘neurological proclivity of subordinate something-or-other.” and then he chuckled and put a hand on her shoulder. “But I can certainly appreciate your enthusiasm.” and he smiled at her before removing his hand. “I hope that you get a chance to study all of that and more. Just make sure you don’t spread yourself too thin. We need everyone on point, Ensign. As the old nautical maps on Earth used to say where unexplored places were shown… ‘Here there be dragons.’” and he nodded at her and then at Calloway. “Now, if you both will excuse me. I have a ship to run.” and he began walking down the passageway.

“Captain,” Faye said simply as he moved to leave.

Heat rushed to her cheeks and Kiama felt a little sheepish. But at least the Captain wasn’t annoyed as many other people had before when she talked their ears off without even noticing it. “I will do my best, Sir,” she replied with a smile. “So far I’ve mostly managed to keep a healthy balance.”

~Ensign Naim, Scientist

“Keep that up, Ensign.” Cochrane replied as he began walking. “That is a skill that will serve you well throughout your career.” and the CO waves and disappeared around a band in the passageway.

Faye looked between her lab door and the new ensign. “Right, so… I suppose i have work to do as well,” she said awkwardly.

~Faye Calloway, Data Specialist

Smiling sheepishly, Kiama nodded, “Yes, I should let you get back to work and continue my own exploration in non-restricted sections.” Looking straight into Faye’s grey-green eyes, she continued, “It was good meeting you, Lieutenant. I hope you’ll have a good rest of your day and maybe we can meet for a drink or lunch or something in the Lounge some time.” She had a feeling, that Faye wasn’t someone to easily accept such offers, but it never hurt to offer.
