Subconsciously, Kiama leaned slightly forward. “Your description sounds both familiar and foreign to me and I can only imagine how hard it must be for you not to have that bond. As a Betazoid I can always sense the emotions of the people around me. So we learn how to shield our own emotions and ourselves form the emotions around us when our telepathic and empathic abilities begin to manifest during puberty. I suppose it’s similar for you? A way of self-protection so we don’t get overwhelmed by the emotions around us. And it’s similar with our telepathy. I could read almost anybody’s mind on this ship, but I don’t as I respect their privacy. Often we use our telepathy more as a way of communication than anything else. The idea of losing that is frightening and I can imagine how lonely you must feel because you don’t have the bond out here. I …” Suddenly her voice trailed off and her gaze became unfocused, with her eyes slightly narrowed and her left thumb lightly resting sideways on her lips.

“We have our ability from when we are young kids,” Kaia said with a slight tilt of her head. “It is not something that can be blocked, which is why I compare it more to the sense of smell than anything else, usually. Or the ability to see colours. You cannot stop seeing in colour without stopping sight at all.” She trailed off, seeing Naim looking somewhat… distraught? It was hard to tell. “Are you okay?” she asked, reaching over and putting her little hand on Naim’s knee.

Blinking once or twice, Kiama returned to the here and now. Placing her slender, dark hand gently on top of Kaia’s she sad, “Yes, I am. I just had an idea and my thoughts went down a rabbit hole. I’m sorry.” Shaking her head ever so slightly, she continued, “It is fascinating that your people have those abilities since childhood. If a Betazoid is born with these abilities, they usually develop severe mental health problems. Anyway, that bond sounds like a very special connection. I wish there was something I could do to help.”

“I suppose it makes sense for us to have the empathic sense as a child, as it is an integral part of how we communicate as individuals and as communities. A child without the Enne is… I would think they would grow up with a lack of ability to empathize with others. Galdor has a marked decrease in childhood bullying. And in any kind of negative relationships. When you can feel the pain of the person you are causing pain to, it makes it less easy to hurt others.” Kaia rambled.

Kiama nodded here and there in reply. “That development of your society is only logical. It’s the same on Betazed. We are a very peaceful society and crime rates among Betazoids are very low for the same reasons you mentioned: You feel another person’s pain, you’re unlikely to cause pain on purpose,” she replied. After a short pause she added, “What does Galdor look like? I assume there are different climate zone as you’d find on most M-Class planets? What does the place look like you’re from?”

~Ensign Naim, Scientist

“Galdor is an M-Class, yes. We have a wide variety of climate zones. The area I am from is called a temperate rainforest, with winters below freezing, summers ranging into the 30s or 40s Celsius, and high levels of rainfall. One of Galdor’s most popular destinations to visit is there, Ba’slu city - the city of trees. It is… beautiful. I did not grow up in Ba’slu city, but I was able to visit it before I left for Starfleet. I grew up rather close to the forest floor, in houses where several trees make up a house. In Ba’slu, the trees are so massive that one can fit an entire library within the trunk. It is amazing to see.”
