Shon’s relief at the change of topic prompted another wave of guilt, which then shifted to embarrassment as he was very aware that Kiama could probably sense all of these internal feelings.

Pushing forward to leave the heavy subject behind, Shon tilted his head upward in thought as he retracted his hands and used his spoon to scrape up the remains of his clam chowder. “What did I like most about the Academy…? Well, your second question is easier so I’ll start there. I actually moved to Earth when I was fifteen to complete secondary education at a San Francisco public school that has a reputation for feeding graduates into the Academy. I had a wonderful host family that I still keep in touch with. And it obviously worked out for the best, because I got into the San Francisco Starfleet Academy, first try!” He beamed, obviously a bit proud of himself.

“Oh wow,” Kiama said softly; feeling both impressed and surprised, while also wondering if there was more to it. Moving to another planet without your family at the age of fifteen was a big step after all.

“This may sound sappy,” he continued, “but I guess honestly what I liked most about the Academy was the people. It was so amazing to be surrounded by such smart, talented individuals, and from such a variety of cultures as well! I was lucky to have a wonderful cohort. I made a lot of great friends there, but taking this position on the Manhattan means that I won’t be seeing any of them for a bit, considering they’re all back in the alpha and beta quadrants.”

Shon smiled warmly. “But that’s why it’s so exciting to meet new smart, talented people, like you!”

OOC: I’m sorry for the delayed reply. RL got rather crazy.

Kiama returned Shon’s smile and nodded here and there while listening. “Well, thank you for the compliment. I can definitely return it. And I agree, it’s great to meet so many and divers people through Starfleet; both within and by exploring this galaxy!” she said, her eyes sparkling. “I can’t wait to get to know the rest of the crew and to meet other species. There is so much to learn. It’s exciting!”

Shon snickered. “Listen to us! If only a recruiter for the academy could hear us now… they’d have us shooting a promotional vid like that,” he said with a snap of his fingers.

Kiama had just popped another macaroni into her mouth and nearly inhaled it as she started to laugh; which in turn led to a bad coughing fit. For some reason she had a hard time stopping her laughter which made the whole “not being able to breath because of a macaroni” situation worse. Tears even started to well up her eyes and still she was laughing and coughing at the same time.

Shon half-stood from his chair as Kiama’s food went down the wrong pipe, watching her intently for any signs of choking. When he confirmed that she was still able to breathe despite the coughing and laughing, he settled back down, glad that he didn’t jump straight into the Heimlich. Still, Shon eyed Kiama with apprehension until she had completely cleared her throat.

“What about you,” Shon volleyed back, “were you at San Fransisco Academy? It’s a big campus and considering we’re in different fields, it’s entirely possible that our paths simply didn’t cross.”

Finally recovered from the macaroni-incident, Kiama replied, “I went to the San Francisco Academy as well. And I’m not surprised that our paths didn’t cross despite the overlap in science and medical. But as you said, it’s a big campus and you graduated before me, so we were in different cohorts on top of that.”

Shon nodded. “But then again, maybe that’s why you feel familiar, in some way. A friendly face, even all the way out here.”
