Faye waved her off slightly. “Nah, I’m all good,” she said, moving for a chair. Settling herself in and leaning back, Calloway gazed at Kiama curiously. “So, now that you’re running the show, as it were, I bet you’re curious what I can actually tell you about my work.”

“Your bet is correct,” Kiama replied as she sat down on her chair again; her back straight and her legs crossed at the knees. Though, while there was a certain stiffness about her posture, she didn’t seem uncomfortable or tense. “And I would like to enlist you to help the science department during the upcoming mission. But we can talk about that later. First I’d like to know all you can tell me about your work and yourself. I’ve read your file. Or at least all of it I have access to.” To herself, she added, Though that raised more questions than it answered. Aloud she continued, “And in return you can ask me whatever you want to know about me.” While she was a fairly social person, there were things about herself that she didn’t like to talk about. Yet she had a feeling that if she sincerely offered the chance to ask questions in return, Faye might feel ever so slightly more comfortable.

For a moment Faye wished she had her swivelling chair from the lab. There was something about turning back and forth that allowed her more nervous energy to be expelled in a controlled way. “Well, what I told you before is true. Much of my work is classified and restricted to the captain and first officer. But what I can say is that I am essentially reinforcing the Manhattan’s firewall systems and improving external communications. My task is to improve data security and ensure we can communicate with the Alpha Quadrant via the wormhole as we need to.” Would that prompt more questions? Scientists by their nature were curious people so Faye certain expected it.

Tilting her head slightly to the side, Kiama looked at Faye for a moment. Or at least she looked in her direction. Considering that her eyes seemed unfocused and glazed over she was probably not really looking at anything just now. Eventually she said, “Physics and IT have never been my forte. So, can you explain in more detail? Also, I understand the part about ensuring that we can communicate with the Alpha Quadrant. But I was under the assumption that Starfleet vessels have a very strong firewall to begin with. What is there about our mission out here that needs reinforced firewalls?” She felt like a complete novice and hoped that Faye didn’t think she completely incompetent. And thus a very small part of her felt tempted to read Faye to find out what the other woman was thinking about her. But that would be a violation of her privacy and something Kiama had sworn to herself she would never do. So she pushed that thought to the very back of her mind and just hoped for the best.

She shook her head very slowly and with honest regret. “I’m afraid I can’t tell you that. But, aside from a few small excursions, Starfleet has not had the opportunity to have any significant presence in the Delta Quadrant, until now. With the completion of Starbase Event Horizon, we now have a jumping off point to explore in a way we haven’t since the day the Bajoran wormhole was discovered, revealed..... whatever you want to call it.” Faye leaned in and adopted a serious mien. “The point is that we are vulnerable out here. Starfleet Command is still a long ways away, and we still face risks that we wouldn’t poking about the Federation. My job is to anticipate those risks and batten down the hatches as it were. And it’s a job I take very seriously,” she said openly.

“I understand,” Kiama nodded in reply. Throwing caution to the wind, she continued, “In fact I know more about confidentiality and security clearances and the like than most people would expect; especially from someone who only recently graduated from Starfleet Academy. But because of Betazed’s recent past and my family’s position in society, it’s been a part of my life for almost as long as I can remember.” Almost as if in an afterthought she added, “At least till I left.”
