Kaia looked around the room. “Not much. I was looking at the ceiling and following the weaving patterns in and out. They are kinda pretty. A little mesmerizing if you stare at them too long…”

Kaia, Engineer

Kiama followed her friend’s gaze and looked at the ceiling as well. “They are,” she said softly. “You could almost lose yourself in them.” While she stared at the pattern, her mind started to wander; back to her childhood, but also to the more recent past and the present. It was a bit as if her mind was jumping from one memory to next, following a trail of emotions.

Kaia closed her eyes and refocused. “Want to see the rest of the house? I think we may have to cut the tour short after that, but we can meet up another time to see the next place.”

Kaia, Engineer

“I’d like that and I’d love to see as much as you’d like to show me,” Kiama replied with a warm smile. She was sad that they’d have to part ways soon, even if it was only very temporary. And really, on a starship you were never really far apart. She enjoyed Kaia’s company a lot. So while she was sad that their date would eventually be over, she was also excited about the prospect of meeting again. Yet the more pressing question was: How to get out of the hammock without landing on her bum again? As she shifted her weight, she felt the hammock move more than she’d like. But to her own surprise she managed to get off without making a fool of herself. Looking sheepishly at Kaia, she said, “Well, that certainly went better than trying to get onto the hammock.”

Kaia couldn’t control the small guffaw that released from that comment, a blast of laughter that caused her to rock back and forth in the hammock a little. She hopped off gracefully, landing on all fours then standing up. She told the computer to revert the size of the build, and the room shrank around them. Thankfully the ceilings were tall enough for Kiama to not have to stoop, although the doorways might make her feel like she was in a hobbit hole.

Kaia, Engineer

As Kaia started to laugh, Kiama couldn’t help but laugh as well. Not that she even tried not to, though. Laughing together in this way was always good! Once the room had returned to its previous size, she said, “Lead the way!” While it had been interesting to see what the room would feel and look like for her friend, she didn’t mind at all that it was back to it’s original size now; including having to stoop to walk through doorways. In a way it was almost a … humbling experience and put a new perspective on her own privileges.
