“Yes, Sir,”replied Naim almost immediately. She then headed towards Byrne Knots and greeted her with a warm smile. “Good day, Minister Knots. I’m Lieutenant Kiama Naim, the Manhattan’s Chief Science Officer and this is my colleague Lieutenant Faye Calloway. It’s a pleasure to meet you. How would you like to proceed from here on?” While she had a plan of her own in mind, she didn’t want to give the impression that they came here to take over or anything. This was their planet and the she and the rest of the crew were guests here. Thus it seemed only right to her, to led the sub-minister lead the way forward.

Byrne was very eager and she reached out in that eagerness and pumped Naim’s hand in a vigorous shake. “I am so pleased to meet you,” she said and glanced at the retreating figure of the Second Minister. “Call me Knots. First names are typically used in clan homes and the clan name, in my case Knots, outside of that. Otherwise everyone in the house would be Knots and that would be terribly confusing, wouldn’t it.” She turned to Faye and almost sprang forward to shake her hand, braids bouncing.

While managing not to giggle, Naim didn’t fully manage to keep an amused smirk off her face at the eagerness of Knot. It was a little over the top, but at least right now she didn’t mind that. Though hopefully some of that would slightly ebb away as they started to work together.

The oft socially awkward Calloway startled a little and looked a bit wary, but stuck out her hand anyway and gave a nod. “Nice to meet you,” she said sincerely, though with noticeably less brightness than Knots projected.

Knots didn’t appear to notice the hesitancy and just charged on anyway.

“I’m very interested in the issues you’re experiencing with your crops. I come from a colony that grew a lot of our own food, so while it was n a smaller scale, I know a great deal. Could you explain more about the specific observations you’ve been making?” At least this was something she could focus on and she was most definitely very interested in helping.

“It is one field in particular that is puzzling us and we are simply at wits end,” Knots said, her hands waving in apparent extra expression.

Even though she didn’t mind taking the lead on projects, Naim was happy to let Calloway lead the conversation. The other woman was, after all, the expert and it thus made much more sense for to ask the questions and whatnot. So for now she listened closely, while also tuning into all her other senses; though as always she wasn’t reading people’s minds.

“It simply is producing little or what there is is like it has been through a drought, but that simply is not so.” She directed them away not toward the archway where most others were going but toward a small hangar. “We get to take a flier. That will get us there much faster and you can see it from overhead.” Knots was leading them toward a square looking contraption that looked not unlike a drone of old only much larger. It had a transparent control area, an oblong bubble set between the four arms extending over. Instead of blades there were rotors. Similarly, under the oblong bubble there were more. It looked not unlike a rather large insect.

“The crops in question are principally grains grown in the midlands which are on the rise between the coast here and the mountain range.”

“What is the expected yield versus what you’re actually getting?” Faye asked curiously, happy to have a problem to put her mind to work on that was different from the rest of the mess that had been her professional life lately.

Knots came to the machine and the doors slid back automatically along with steps folding out. She launched herself up the steps. “I am a qualified pilot, in case you are wondering,” she said. “It was one of the requirements when I did my post university schooling. My mentor did not want to drive and did not fly so I was required to.” She fitted a pair of goggles over her eyes that looked like a kind of WWI set of flying goggles only with thinner rims. “There is a webbing bar next to you. Just pull it over you and it will auto lock.”

She started up a sequence then turned in the chair that evidently swiveled. “The yield is about 30% on average from what we’d expect. However the grains are inedible. When you process them they lose all structure and are dust after the grinding. You can in places rub them between your palms and they just fall apart.”
