“Well, I think it has to do with the bonds that we form. Raka bond for life. I know there are a lot of races out there where the mating bonds, well, do not last long, but that does not work for us,” Kaia tried to explain. “If a Raka is the beloved of another, being far apart is painful, emotionally. I have heard it compared to a deep depression. They can handle a few weeks or months, but some off-world missions can take years. There were… a lot of, well… suicides, in the early days,” she looked away. It was a dark topic, and she didn’t want to make her friend uncomfortable.

Kiama walked over to Kaia and gently put one hand on her friend’s shoulder. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to bring up such a painful subject,” she said softly. She didn’t mind talking about such things, but she didn’t want Kaia to feel sad or feeling like she had to tell her something that was a painful memory in her people’s history.

“The people of Galdor do not hide that history, but we swore to learn from that mistake. Mated pairs cannot be separated without breaking the bond that ties them (essentially, divorce), at least among the Raka and Laleri. And ships built for long-term exploration or combat are not the best places to raise children, whatever species you are,” she added.

“That’s true. I guess with Starfleet allowing families on so many of their ships, it never fully crossed my mind that that is not the case for every culture and might actually not be the safest place for a family,” she mused. More to herself, she added, “Though safety is also sort of relative, isn’t it?”

“That is true,” Kaia said with a deep breath. “I am not sure about Starfleet’s practices in that, but I am not the one who makes those decisions. Obviously.”

Kiama nodded silently, not sure what else to say. But maybe there was nothing else that needed to be said right now.

“Do you want to go get something to eat?”

Kaia, Eng

“Yes, food would be good,” Kiama replied with a smile, followed by a soft chuckle as she realised that she was actually feeling hungry. Funny how quickly time passes when you are in pleasant company or how easily she forgot to eat at regular intervals. “Where would you like to go?”

“I think there is a cafeteria nearby, next to one of the rec rooms,” Kaia suggested. “Computer, end program,” she instructed, and the black room full of green lines re-appeared around them. “I have been considering getting a pet. What do you think of that? Have you ever had a pet?”

Kaia, Eng.

Kiama nodded in reply to Kaia’s suggestion and then shook her head. “No, I haven’t. I begged my mother for one when I was a child, but she was dead set against. I didn’t understand at the time. While it isn’t very common on Betazed to have pets, it isn’t unusual either. A few of my friends had pets and I couldn’t understand why my mother wouldn’t allow it.” A soft, humourless, chuckle escaped her lips. “She always said, ‘You’ll understand when you’re older.’ It made me so angry. But the thing is: she was right. I understand now. As a Betazoid, I can sense the emotions of animals as well. They can be harder to block and more unsettling at times. Especially if you come from a family of strong telepaths, as my mother - and thus I - does.” Looking at Kaia she added with a smile, “Though I think having a pet is wonderful. You should get one. What type of pet were you thinking of?”

~Ensign Naim, Science

“That makes sense. We also have empathic abilities, but it does not connect to non-sentient beings of our planet. Or anyone outside of Galdor, sentient or not. Complex animals, we can slightly sense their desires or needs - hunger, sleepiness, energy levels, and such. And they can sense our intentions, as far as they are able to comprehend. That is what makes the Vek such good hunting companions, as we are able to communicate wordlessly with them during the hunt. They are very intelligent animals. I was thinking, perhaps a fish. Something without too much in the way of emotional energy requirements.”

Kaia, Engineer

Kiama nodded here and there as she listened to Kaia while walking towards the cafeteria. “A fish sounds nice. And those held as pets are always very pretty to look at. Not to mention that you don’t have to worry about a fish tearing your quarters apart while you’re on duty or escaping or something,” she said with a wink. “Any idea what kind of fish you’d like best?”

~Ensign Naim, Science

Kaia nodded, immediately looking very excited to share. “There is this Earth fish called a ‘Beta,’ and it is such a beautiful fish. They have long, trailing fins and they can be this vibrant blue colour. And they are solitary too so I don’t have to worry about getting it a companion fish! Of course… Getting it to the Manhattan might be an ordeal. I wonder if they can put a fish in stasis…?”
