She nodded and carefully rose to her feet, balancing on the edge of the stone retaining wall that held the tier she was standing on. Gesturing over to Naim’s left, Faye smiled. “So basically, much of this will be pathways lined with beds. I will eventually have more hardscaping and larger shrubs and even small trees that will create quiet spaces. In the middle we’re looking at more open, formal styled beds and over there”-she gestured the area to the CSO’s right-“will be beds for food production. At least that’s what I’ve had in my head as I started all this.”

Looking at each direction Faye pointed out, Kiama saw the arboretum come to life in front of her mind’s eye as she listened to Faye’s description. A soft, moonstruck smile on her face.

Carefully, Faye stepped down to the next tier ledge and then hopped off over the last two to the ground, flexing her knees enough to cushion the shock. “All in all, I’m looking forward to seeing how it comes along.”

After blinking a couple of times, Kiama turned and looked at Faye again. “Me too,” she said softly. After one more look around she continued, “I’m happy to help in whichever way I can. Just let me know what you need.” While she wasn’t exactly a gardener herself, she had always enjoyed being outside and surrounded by nature. It was one of the things she was missing serving on a starship. Also, Faye’s passion for this project was contagious. In a good way.

“Seeing as we are producing something useful in here,” Max grinned, his comment pointing out a typical view that inedible planets were a waste of time to some people’s opinions, although they looked nice sometimes, “what would the chance be of securing a small plot to grow chillies, specifically. I might even get the Science dept involved in a quest to make the galaxies hottest chilli.”

Lt Cmdr Wynter, CE

Faye grinned. “Don’t worry, I’ll save you a row or two for chillies. I might even help so I can then in turn make the best hasperat you’ve ever had. Learned from a Bajoran friend of my parents. Guaranteed to light your face on fire in the best possible way.” She glanced at Kiama. “If, of course, you think you could divert some of your department’s resources to such an endeavour.”

~Faye Calloway, Data Specialist

“Absolutely,” replied Kiama without missing the beat. “I love this project and as long as it doesn’t impact whatever mission we happen to be on - and I don’t see that happening - I’m more than happy to divert resources from my department. Just let me know what you need.” She smiled enthusiastically at Fay as she talked.

Kaia practically burst through the door, panting slightly. “Sorry, I am so late! I know I was supposed to be here like half an hour ago but I got so sidetracked with arranging the decorations for Indie’s tank that I completely forgot that time was passing!!”

She looked at the trio. Her two friends on the Manhattan and her DH. Oh. Her DH. She didn’t know the CE was going to be here. She stood up slightly. “Ah…hi Lt. Cmdr Wynter…”

Kaia, Engineer

Waiting for Max talk first, Kiama simple greeted her friend with a wide smile.

~Lt.jg. Naim, aCSO

“Ensign Kaia,” Max said and waved her over. “Perfect timing, tell me, what’s your opinion on Chillies? Those spicy vegetables, you know? Any experience in making them really grow well?” Despite the fact he was kidding, his face was perfectly straight and he seemed like it was a purely professional work question, although the glint in his eyes betrayed him to anyone that new him more than just in passing.

Lt Cmdr Wynter, CE

“I am not familiar with that vegetable,” Kaia replied frankly. “You should know my people do not eat much, if any, plant material. It gives us bad gas and… other gastrointestinal problems.” She answered his kidding question with an answer that provided far more information than he asked for.

Kaia, Eng

“Well with the kind of chillies I’m talking about, everybody is bound to get gastrointestinal problems if done right,” he grinned in reply. Max had always been a salt of the earth type of Engineer and that kind of conversation around the dinner table had never phased him. The looks Jasmine gave him when he did it phased him far more than the actual topic of conversation.

“Not even for flavour and seasoning?” Max asked Kaia. “I mean, your people have evolved more from the whole rip the meat off the bone still bloody, right? Maybe?”

Lt Cmdr Wynter, CE

“We cook our meat. And we substitute it with other proteins when available. But the Raka are still hypercarnivores. A rarity among humanoid species, I know. We do not tend to add spices or flavours to our food. We do not have the most refined sense of taste so such efforts are… Somewhat wasted on us.”
