Turning, she braced her hands on the edge of the worktop and leaned carefully on the table. Allowing herself to meet his gaze, so inhaled slowly, wondering how much of this she should or could explain. But he valued honesty and it was the one thing that made things easier lately. “Well, the bet about the pizza was real. It was a joke though. I just… I guess after the whole thing with the jefferies tubes and my actual assignment came to the surface I realized I didn’t want to go back to how I had done things before. I mean, I still will balk at large gatherings. I’d rather face a firing squad most times, especially if I can’t just blend in and hide a bit.” Faye smiled slightly. “But… Jasmine Wynter happened and suddenly it seems I have a friend I wasn’t expecting. I don’t know what it is about that woman, but she’s fearless in a way I’ve never been. I can’t change who I am or the things that have happened to me, but I don’t want to live my life waiting for the next thing to explode. I like it here. It’s home in a way I haven’t had for a very long time. And I guess I just want to celebrate that in my own weird way with people who don’t run away screaming after interacting with me.” She shrugged and gave a lopsided smirk.

Cochrane listened as she explained, and his eyes focused on her movements and expressions. When she finished, he was quiet a minute. “Faye… you have no idea how happy that makes me to hear you say that. That is probably the best compliment a ship captain can get, that their ship feels like home. And I’m glad we can give you that, Faye. Really… I’m more than pleased that you feel comfortable here. Because this ship is better off with you on it.” and he nodded at her.

She smiled softly. “Well, you’ve gone out of your way to demonstrate that, and aside from being unusual, I’m in a place in my life to actually believe it. So thank you.”

“And you are right… that lady is a sheer force of will and nature. I think I’d take your firing squad rather than tick her off.” and he laughed.

Faye laughed. “Indeed. And she’s not the only one either. There are others I’ve been cordial with, though it helps that my garden project is interesting to more than just me,” she said with a grin. “You should come by soon and see where we’re at.” It was one of those things that Fate just couldn’t help but be enthusiastic about. And while it wasn’t work per say, it was meaningful on a personal level and it was in the end as much for the crew as it was for her. It went without saying that she’d have never bothered to start it if she didn’t think she’s stick around to finish and enjoy it.

“I’ve heard. I’ll come by and take a look. I’ve been trying to keep my distance so that there is some place that is wholly separate from rank and the reservations that come with Command Staff being present. But I want to see, so I’ll just blame you for inviting me.” and he laughed and then cast a glance at the door. “Where are your other guests? Oh… right… its them. Never mind.” and he chuckled again.

She gave a lopsided smirk. “I could pester and find out how late they’re going to be, but my dough isn’t going to go off. Worse comes to worse we get first dibs and get to make ours when we’re hungry. And besides, it’s not like the company is terrible,” Faye said, shifting into a grin. She couldn’t remember smiling or laughing as much as she had in the short time he’d been here. How did he exactly manage that anyway. But that was why she enjoyed spending time with him, why she had been feeling ever drawn to him. But as far as she knew it was entirely one-sided. Just because he was glad to have her on the ship, didn’t mean there was anything personal on his end.

And yet… there was this part of her that wanted to find out one way or the other. Faye just couldn’t get him off her mind most days, which was the weirdest thing to have happened to her socially in a very long time. But she could play the long game. It was what she was good at anyway. “So, besides those twinkle toes of yours, any other interesting hobbies or skills I should know about?”

He leaned back and smiled and said “Well… I do like music. So I may play an instrument… or, you know… five.” and he laughed. “Well, I used to. Haven’t since I was given the Manhattan, actually. My instruments are still packed away in my quarters or in the hold. What about you? What do you do when you arent pursuing logic problems and cracking computer code?” and he smiled at her.
