He laughed and picked up a fork. “I honestly don’t think I could make it that long without trying this. But I’ll eat fast.” and he smiled and winked and took a bite.

Cochrane, CO

She laughed and picked up another bite of her own. “See… I get you to eat.” She smiled and leaned back in her seat slightly. “I’m gonna have to be sure you don’t skip dinners anymore. You realize that. I hope you don’t get sick of me after a week.”

He chewed and swallowed, then picked up a piece of garlic bread. “Well I suppose that depends heavily on the menu selections, doesn’t it?” and he smiled as he took a bite.

Cochrane, CO

She laughed and nodded. “So perhaps, rather than hacking your replicator to find out what you order the most, because something tells me it’s not a clear cut list,” she laughed again. “How about I simply ask you what you like to eat?”

Raye
Diplomat

He finished a bite and thought a moment. “My stables are just sandwiches. But I am not averse to a good salad. My family tends towards vegetarian dishes since my father married my step-mother and her cultured vegetarian leanings. But I can certainly enjoy a steak every now and then. But my all-time favorite? Sushi. I could live on that only and be happy. What about you? What are your preferences?”

Cochrane, CO

She laughed. “Meat and potatoes girl, I confess. Though I have a weakness for pasta. I enjoy salads as well and haven’t had sushi in years, to be honest. Guess it never crosses my mind to eat it in space.” She smiled and nodded to the lasagna. “I hope it’s good enough. Maybe next time I’ll get a nice eggplant Parmesan. How’s that?”

She took a sip of her drink and started to use her bread to soak up and eat some of the sauce on the edges.

Raye
Diplomat

“Mr. Harv makes an amazing vegetable risotto. Maybe you should get in his good graces and ask him to make a batch. Trust me… well worth whatever you bribe him with.” and he laughed and took another bite of the lasagna. “And it’s good. Or I am more hungry than I thought.”

Cochrane, CO

She laughed. “I’m a bit selfish. I’m going to say it is because it tastes good. And I’ll keep that in mind. It sounds amazing.” After a couple bites she looked at him. “So, in the 5 minutes a week that you lack anything professional to do,” she teased him with a smile, “what do you like to do? Am I sitting before a closet violin virtuoso, or perhaps a Vulcan poetry aficionado?” She smiled and wriggled her eyebrows teasing him.

Raye

He stopped with a bite half-way to his mouth and grinned. “Why, yes… yiu could say I am an aficionado of Vulcan writing. It helps… considering who my mother is.” and he set his fork down, still smiling. “I have to ask… did you mean that as a joke? Or did you miss a certain segment of my file that I am sure you have read.”

Cochrane, CO

“Actually, I was serious, to an extent. I was aware of your mother. But children from mixed families seem to usually go one way or the other. And while I knew nothing of what Vulcan culture you embraced, if you did embrace anything, it might be the poetry. Especially with the influence being your mother. Had it been your father, it probably wouldn’t have crossed my mind. Many think them cold but they are some of the most in depth souls I have ever met. And with you being to dedicated and stoic, I took a chance you inherited more from your mother than merely your work ethics.” She glanced at him and held up her glass smiling.

“And I happen to like Vulcan poetry. I am by no means a professional at it. But I often find myself stirred by their words.” She watched him wondering if that was the answer he had been expecting.

Cochrane nodded and said “Fair enough. Well, I am very interested in my mother’s work. And she and my sister, her daughter, not my twin… have both embraced a lot of human culture as well. Stova is absolutely fascinated by music from the 1980’s. She says that Depeche Mode is the most mathematically perfect sound in the universe.”

Cochrane, CO

She screwed up her face a little and laughed. “I am horrible at ancient Earth music and culture. I tend to get so caught up in the here and now because of my job, that it always seemed that looking that far back was of no value other than entertainment. Something, like you, I seem to not take enough of.” She leaned back, setting her empty plate back on the tray. “Though if you care to, we can schedule out five minutes a week at the same time and you can show me.” She winked and laughed.

Raye
Diplomat

“Well, I dont share her taste in music. My tastes lay back a bit further, even. I love listening to swing music. I even learned to dance in that style.” and he laughed. “And that would take a bit longer than five minutes to teach.”

Cochrane, CO

Raye laughed. “Well, you are the Captain, perhaps you can bank up your weekly break and take a whole daring 30 minute break some time.” She widened her eyes in mock shock and awe and laughed. “I am definitely not familiar with swing and I doubt my waltzing skills translate to swinging dancing.” She laughed unaware she had misspoken the dance style.

Raye
Diplomat

He laughed and said “*Swing, not swinging. But you do some of that when you dance that way. And I bet waltz would give you a good base to start.” and he pushed his now empty tray away as well. “Now I believe we had a deal of some kind? Concerning dessert?”

Cochrane, CO

Her laugh was full of embarrassment. “Well apparently I can hold a conversation with my foot in my mouth. That’s gotta count for something.” When he mentioned the deal, she laughed and grabbed the bottle. “You grab the cake, I’ll take the bottle. I will send someone in later to clear this up. If that’s all right with you,” she smiled and rose, waving the bottle slowly back and forth in front of him with enticement.

Raye
Diplomat

“Nope, I got it. My space, my mess. On this ship, no one cleans up my messes in here since I’m the one that makes them.” and he stood and straightened his uniform. He gestured to door and said “After you.” and he picked up the cake.

Cochrane, CO

She smiled. “Then I’ll help you clean up later, if you want. My mess, too, after all.” She laughed and went thru the door. Passing thru the Bridge, a bottle of scotch in her hand and cake in his, they got more than a couple odd looks. The Watch had changed and she was grateful for it. She moved without a word towards the lift, her ‘diplomatic face’ on with its solid pleasant smile and a nod to those who said good night to her.

Raye

Cochrane looked at the Watch Commander and said “Done for the evening, Lieutenant. Make sure the Department Heads all have copies of the last transmission from the Event Horizon, and tell Engineering that I am still getting complaints about the refreshers on Deck 6. If they cant get the smell handled by 0800, then I will have a few words with the Chief Engineer about his shift personnel. Tell them that exactly. Good night, Lieutenant. Safe watch.” and he absent mindedly patted the woman on the shoulder and nodded to emphasize his point.

“Yes, sir. I’ll make sure its handled right away. Have a good evening,Sir.” and she tapped the comms, a look of a targ on the hunt on her face.

Cochrane followed Anders to the turbolift and then said “Lead the way, Ms. Anders.”

Cochrane, CO

Raye smiled and headed for the lift, stepping in before him. Once they had started, she smiled. “So, is chocolate cake a good dessert choice, or is there something else you favor?” She nodded to the plates he held.

Raye

Cochrane smiled and looked at the floor, then up to her. “Let me think on that one for a moment.” and he looked at the deck and section indicator as they moved along. It was a short ride, and in a few moments the doors opened. Gesturing out with one of the plates, he said “After you.”

Cochrane, CO

“So many choices, I know.” She laughed and preceded him out of the lift and turned to head for her quarters. When they stepped in, he’d see a room more or less sparse but comfortable. There were padds scattered on her desk and a forgotten cup of tea. There was a blanket haphazard tossed on the back of the couch as if discarded by someone napping and a pillow against the armrest to support the idea.

Around the room were assorted trinkets and baubles from her past. Mostly intricately designed boxes in various sizes and shapes. Some jeweled, some engraved, but enough to make one think it was a collectable. She nodded to the couch. “Make yourself comfortable. I’ll grab glasses and forks.” She set the bottle down and lifted her legs one and a time, heel across her opposite thigh, and unzipped her boots. Setting them beside the door, she opened the cupboard to search for glasses.

Raye

Alex shrugged and moved the blanket and took a spot on the opposite end from the pillow. He looked around and saw the various boxes about. “Are you a collector? Or are these a specifc decor I’m not familiar with?”
