Alex laughed and clapped. “Oh, yeah! That sounds like a great idea, Faye! I’d love to!” and he clapped once. “You better review some vids on it. Let’s you know what you are in for.” and he chuckled.

Faye was entirely unready for such an enthusiastic response. So with slightly wide eyes, her look of surprise shifted to a wide grin. “I’ll be sure to do that,” she said with a light laugh. Huh. How was this so easy? Had she changed that much? Or was it him? Maybe Alex Cochrane was just the right kind of person to set her at ease.

Propping her elbow on the table, she rested her chin in her hand. “So, cooking lessons. Anything you’d like to learn to make? I can pretty much wing it on any cooking surface. But we should probably stick to basics initially.”

Alex thought about it for a moment and then said “An omelette. I have never been able to make one of those. Is that basic enough?” and he laughed.

Faye nodded thoughtfully through her smile, chin still in hand. “Yes, that’s a good place to start. Eggs are always good.” Her gaze drifted off elsewhere. “My dad liked omelettes. He was a good cook too,” she said softly. For once it wasn’t painful to remember, but it wasn’t often she willingly went down that memory lane.

Cochrane looked at her and saw her perspective shift. He said, slightly softly so as not to interrupt her reverie, “Is that where you learned? From your dad?”

She nodded and smiled softly, shifting her gaze back at Alex. “Partly. He was a tech guy and found cooking to be relaxing. My mom could cook something edible but definitely had no talent for it. But between my dad and his friend Karden Jast, I got to attempt a lot of stuff I don’t think I would have if we had lived elsewhere.” She shrugged. “Perks of living in a small self-sufficient settlement.” Then she grinned. “But Jast did teach me to make a mean hasperat.”
