“That is really neat,” Kiama smiled and then rose gracefully to her feet as well. Walking over to one of the replicators, she ordered a large salad with baby spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, crumbled goat cheese, corn, some chicken breast and a vinaigrette. She also ordered a piece of garlic bread and a bit of rhubarb juice mixed with sparkling water. Taking the try from the replicator, she headed straight back to the table and slid back onto her chair. “I hope you’ll like your spicy fried chicken,” she said with a smile.

“I’m sure I will!” Kaia said with a grin, taking a bite of her chicken and happily munching. She looked at Kiama’s meal. It was so complex and full of different types of food! Half of which she couldn’t eat.

Kaia, Eng

Kiama ate several bites of her salad in silence before she asked, “How is your chicken? Do you like the spiciness?” After taking a sip of her drink, she took a bite of her garlic bread, enjoying her meal greatly.

Kaia shrugged slightly. “I can taste a slight burning feeling in the back of my throat but it’s not really standing out for me.” Raka, unfortunately, did not have refined tastebuds.

Kiama nodded thoughtfully while having another bite of her salad. “Are there any taste that stand out to you in particular?” she asked curiously. “I know that for a lot of people there are things that do. Sometimes so much so that it can overshadow anything else.”

Kaia shook her head slightly. “I dunno. A lot of humanoids put a lot of emphasis on taste but it’s not really all that big for me. I tend to just eat what’s put in front of me without really thinking about how it tastes. I like varying it up sometimes just for fun, but it doesn’t usually make that much of a difference. Unless someone throws heavy fibres into my food… but that’s a different kind of mixing up that’s not so nice,” she grinned wryly.

“Indeed,” Kiama nodded thoughtfully.

“I guess, where humans and other species emphasized taste in evolution, we evolved with enhanced hearing and sight - in comparison to humans. What we lost in our ability to differentiate specific tastes and smells, we more than made up for in our much better hearing. It really helps in engineering. For example, did you realize that there’s some faulty wiring in the wall right behind us? I can hear it fizzing. And with the slight dip into what is classified as Infrared Vision that I have, I’d just like to say that your cheeks and nose are much redder looking for me that they are for you. Especially when you blush,” Kaia said with a cheeky grin.

Kaia, Eng

Tilting her head to the side a fraction of an inch, Kiama tried to hear the fizzing, even though she knew that her hearing wasn’t good enough for that. At the mention of blushing, Kiama chuckled softly. “With how dark my skin is, you are probably the only person on this ship who can see when I blush. Something to keep in mind.” With a wink she continued, “Not that mind, though.” She ate another forkful of salad and then added, “After all, I’m used to everyone knowing exactly what I’m thinking and feeling at any given moment. So when I first left Betazed it took some getting used to that not being the case anymore and people subsequently misinterpreting my emotions and all based on my body language and facial expression. For example, because of my upbringing my generally very straight postured tends to make people misread my body language. Especially when meeting someone over a meal for the first time it happened more than once that they thought I was feeling uncomfortable or wasn’t enjoying myself. When being prim and proper in certain situations is simply deeply ingrained, so much so that I usually don’t even notice.” She gave a small shrug and grinned lopsidedly at Kaia. “I’m sure I’m not the only one those things have happened to and usually any awkwardness resulting from it gets resolved fairly quickly.”

Kaia giggled at the talk about posture as she finished off her meal. “Thanks for spending this time with me, Kiama. It was a lot of fun hanging out,” she said with a big grin.

Kaia. Eng

“It’s been my pleasure and thank you so much for showing me your home. It’s a beautiful place,” Kiama replied with a wide smile. Rising to her feet, she continue, “I’d love to do something like this again in the near future, if you like.”
