Whispered voices again. Voices reaching out to her. False hope. She couldn’t succumb to them!

Then it was like something reached out and plucked her from the carnage. Her eyes slipped open only to be met with dim light and confusion. She expected the red to be everywhere, or maybe to see her tormentor grinning down at her moments before the pain would start again. Trembling, her head snapped in Luke’s direction and in the dim light, she almost cried out, surprised someone was actually there. But the small bit of recognition that allowed her to know it wasn’t was replaced quickly by her most recent companion: shame. Twisting her head away and forcing herself to gaze at the metal bulkhead, Faye wanted to toss some sarcastic comment his way like ‘Come to gloat?’ or something else equally pithy. Instead, her vision blurred and hot tears slipped down her face.

“No” He said drly as he watched her with a face of concern. “I have them too, the night terrors and the cold shakes. I wished someone would wake me up from them” He stepped backed now away from her personal space. “How are you doing?” He asked striking up some small talk.”

So many things she could have said. So many snarky replies. But instead Faye was too tired, too unsettled, too embarrassed by having her lower moments so blatantly on display that she let silence be their companion for a moment while she tried to figure out how to handle this unexpected situation.

Wiping the tears from her face, Face took in a shaky deep breath and turned back on to her back, bending her knees and bringing her feet flat on the bench. ‘Bed’ still seemed far too loose a term for what it was. “I don’t always get them. Years ago I used to. Every night, for years on end. But eventually it got better. A few years ago they returned with a vengeance, and though I have a handle on it most of the time, well… stress doesn’t help,” she said, all the while her gaze fixed on the ceiling. She could hear the subtle hum of the forcefield that had locked him inside the cell with her and for a brief moment wondered if she should be worried. But no, that was irrational. If she had had cause to worry, she doubted he’d have revealed anything personal about himself.

“I find swimming helps me relax my mind, I haven’t been able to do it much since coming here” He said thoughtfully, “Having spoken to some people on the ship it seems that your actions aren’t normal so I’ve come to the conclusion that whatever your doing is for some kind of higher hidden purpose, which I’m sure one day I’ll find out but I guess I’m here to say that I’m glad you came in peacefully and that perhaps my methods were a little aggressive.” That was for Luke as good as an apology as any.

She wished she had known had exactly had gone down earlier but for the moment she could at least hear the remorse in his voice. He could be playing her, but Faye felt convinced he wasn’t. Eyes still fixed on the ceiling, the afterimages of her nightmare were slowly fading, she wished she had thought of asking for a blanket earlier. She didn’t need one- it was plenty comfortable temperature wise- but there was a part of her that wanted to be able to shrink away underneath it a bit. Instead, she just wrapped her arms protectively around herself.

Finally, Faye turned her head and looked at Wyatt. “This ship is my home. This crew… the closest thing I’ve had to family in a very long time. Believe whatever you want about me and my motivations, but know that that is the truth.”

She returned her gaze to the ceiling. “I like swimming too. Did almost a whole year of physical rehab before this assignment and I did a lot of swimming.”

Deciding that enough had been said about why she was in the brig her left that behind them for now, “Swimming can be both physically and emotionally beneficial. We probably underwent similar rehabilitation programs, though I’m sure there were some differences.” Luke remained silent for a few minutes thinking about everything. Not just the chase but everything, his situation his past, and future.

“Well,” He said finally breaking the silence. “Whatever your motives I hope to see you around here more, not the brig of course but the ship and the crew. It would be awfully boring if you weren’t.” He motioned for the forcefield to be brought down and he stepped out. As it went up her turned and smiled, “I haven’t been here long but this is my home now too.”
