The Captain walked into the Labs and walked directly to the CSO’s office. Tapping a command into the pad, the doors slid open and he went inside without a word, allowing the doors to close behind him.

Petty Officer Guldek was on duty and she stared as the CO entered. As the door remained closed for a minute, she was acutely aware that the man surely should have realized that Lieutenant K’Sang wasn’t in his office. Indeed, the Bolian scientist hadn’t seen him all morning. Just as she was about to go and ask the Caotain if he needed anything, an unfamiliar voice came over the comms. =/\= Lieutenant Junior Grade Naim to the CSO office immediately, please. =/\= Guldek stopped short and turned, wondering what was going on.

Kiama had been deeply immersed in a project when the call came over the comms and startled her. The scalpel in her hand slipped, leaving a tiny cut at the side of the index finger of her other hand. Tapping her combadge with that hand while holding up the bleeding finger, she replied, =/\= I’m on my way. =/\= She then put everything as quickly away as possible while wondering who was calling her and why they wanted to talk to her in the CSO’s office. She wasn’t the CSO after all, but K’Sang had probably been called as well or was already there, she mused. On her way out, she fished a band aid out of small, teal coloured box sitting on the work station closest to the door.

It was only a few minutes later that Kiama arrived in front of the office. After quickly making sure that her uniform and hair were still in order, she pressed the chime and waited to be called inside.

The door slid open to reveal the Captain alone in the room. He was placing a small Klingon statuette that had previously sat on the CSO’s desk into a crate. Looking up, he said “Lieutenant JG. Come in, please. Just helping the Lieutenant a bit.” The door slid closed and he pointed at one of the two chairs in front of rhe desk. Taking a seat in the other, his eyes flicked to her finger and he said “Nothing life threatening, I hope?” with a smile.

A hint of confusion played across Kiama’s face as she took in the room and the Captain. Slipping onto the offered chair, her back perfectly straight, she looked briefly down at her own hand as if she had already forgotten what had happened. “Occupational hazard when working with sharp instruments,” she replied with a smile and a soft chuckle. “It’s just a minor cut. I’ll stop by sickbay once my shift is over and have them have a look at it just in case.” Turning more serious again, she continued, “What’s going on Captain? Why are you helping Lieutenant K’sang pack his things? Where is he?”

Cochrane replied “The Lieutenant has been called back to the Alpha Quadrant. Nothing detrimental, in fact quite the opposite. But I am not at liberty to discuss it, so we will continue our conversation in a different vein.” and he fixed Naim with a stare and a slight grin.

Kiama nodded silently and waited for the Captain to continue.

“I want you to be the new… permanent… Chief Science Officer of this vessel. I am hoping that you would agree with me that it is time for you to take that step.”

Bowing her head and closing her eyes for a couple of moments as she tried to sort through her thoughts and emotions while trying to keep them off her face as best as possible. This was certainly not what she had expected and she wasn’t sure how to respond. Did she want the position? Sure, yet after what had happened before and how things had happened … well, she was hesitant to say yes and her emotions were all over the place. Of course she knew that it hadn’t really been anybody’s fault and she had only been acting CSO, which was always temporary position. So she probably should be grateful and just accept the offer.

After several moments of silence, Kiama finally looked up again and said softly, “Thank you for the offer, Captain.” It was neither a yes, nor no and she knew that she should say more. Yet with her thoughts and emotions still all over the place, she found herself quite unable to say anything else just now.

Cochrane’s head cocked slightly to the side and his eyes narrowed slightly. “You’re welcome… but you do know that I need an answer… right? I mean, if you don’t want the job....” and his voice trailed off slightly.
