Cochrane smiled and said “The promotion is necessary, Lieutenant. Because you have earned it.” He looked at her collar and said “You’re out of uniform, Lieutenant. Might want to fix that before you come out of your office. Department overview on the XO’s desk by 1600 hours today, ok?” and before she could answer, he turned and walked through the door.

As the doors closed behind the Captain, Kiama sat back down onto the chair she had just risen from. This was definitely an unexpected turn of events that left her with a number of things to process. For a few minutes she just sat there, lost in thought, before finally opening the small box in her hands. As she switched the hollow pip for the solid one, she couldn’t help but chuckle softly. Not even in her wildest dreams would she have even thought of being promoted to the rank of full Lieutenant so soon after graduating from the Academy. Rising to her feet again, she quickly, but carefully placed the last remaining items of K’sang’s belongings into the box before settling down behind the desk to quickly write the report for Cmdr. Creed, before focusing her attention back on their current mission.

Kaia burst into the office unexpectedly. “Lt. K’sang,” she blurted, then stared at the face sitting at the desk. “Oh, you’re not,” then her eyes snapped onto the golden pip. “Did you?” The little Alien officer looked around the room, made the connection, then jumped up so that she was basically perching on the edge of the table. “Kiama, is that a Lt. Pip? Where’s all K’sang’s stuff? Are you the CSO now?”

Kiama looked up startled as the doors to the … her office door suddenly opened. Yet almost instantly the surprise on her face was replaced by a wide and warm smile. Hello Kaia,” she greeted her with a soft, good-natured chuckle. “Lieutenant K’sang was called back to the Alpha Quadrant, but the Captain told me that he couldn’t go into more detail. And yes, I got promoted about an hour ago and am now the new Chief Science Officer.” Shaking her head a little, she added, “I certainly didn’t see that coming.” Becoming more serious again, she looked closely at her friend and asked, “Is everything okay? Can I be of assistance in some way?”
