Drink her left hand, Faye turned her body towards him, bracing her right arm on the back of her couch. It was somewhat interesting how long it had taken him to close the space between them and actually sit. Maybe there was a part of him that was actually afraid of her, and after the last couple of days, maybe he should be. “Friendddly…” she said with a wide grin. “I tried earlier to keep things civil, buuut you did seem to keep poking about things you shouldn’t.”

“I feel like I keep repeating myself, I deal with facts I needed to know the facts about you” He shrugged taking another sip, sitting back into the chair his arms crossed in his lap once he returned them down for finishing the glass, he hadn’t realised how much he’d been drinking.

“But you also wouldn’t give me the ben’fit of the doubt,” she said with a shrug. “You didn’t want to trust me.”

Setting her drink beside her on the floor, Faye leaned towards him. She wasn’t all that much shorter than him, so she didn’t have to work to gaze into his eyes. “You want to know somet’ing? Okay,” she whispered, her lips drawing that ‘okay’ out like it was multiple syllables. “I have a near eidetic memory. And I learn information very, very quickly. I’m also exceptional with computer systems. It’s why I’m here on dis ship. And soooo, since I wasn’t actually charged with anyt’ing and I still ‘ave my access I went lookin’ into what actually happened when I was on the run.”

“That doesn’t surprise me at all” He set his own glass down now, wondering if they were about to fight or worse… “I did what I had to do.”

Her gaze shifted and while she still seemed highly amused, there was gleam of something more dangerous. Her arm slid along the back of the couch a touch more until she was quite close to him. “I get de unusual circumstances, and I can even forgive ‘em. But… you ever pull that crap on me again, ever treat m’life so carelessly, and”-she dropped her voice to a whisper-“you will regret it. Deeply.” Her hand moved over and she tapped his chin. “Got it?”

He didn’t flinch, intellectually she was smart than him, at least in most ways but he wouldn’t say she intimidated him after all he had gotten the better of her whether she meant him to or not. “Note taken, but ever shoot the captain again or any of this crew I will be taking you in” He felt the almost icy cold of her finger on his chin, unsure if it was in fact cold or just their conversation.

She pulled back slightly, a flicker of pain passing through her eyes. “I didn’t want to. The captain was the one who handed me de phaser. It seemed a reasonable idea at the time…”

He didn’t move back from her posturing, “I don’t want us to fight Calloway, I respect you, what you did to get the job done and I felt like we were moving past our rocky past I hope it can stay that way, in the past that is.” He was trying now, making peace was certainly the more favourable option, he didn’t need nor want her as an enemy her was too old and tired to have to watch his back. “I’ll regret saying this but I almost like your style.”

At that, Faye smiled and sat back. “We all have regrets.” Reaching for her glass again, she adopted the same position as before, with one knee up and bracing her left arm (glass in hand) and right arm on the back of the couch. “Believe it or not, I’ve had no interest in fightin’ you. A few years ago, I might have relished it, but not anymore,” she said with a shake of her head before taking a good gulp of the whiskey.

Deciding to pour himself another he picked up his glass and met her gulp with his own before filling it back up and holding out the glass again for her to have a refill. If he was going to be doing this might as well do it right. “We all share our burdens, sometimes a burden shared is a burden halved”

For a moment she gazed over the back of the couch towards the window, the stars an ever present reminder of many things. When she returned her gaze to him, it was thoughtful. “You wanna know the whole reason we had dat whole chase and brig stupididy? Because someone, a group, is messin’ with me. They want what I know, but I can’t recall it. No access,” she said, tapping her head. Her gaze dropped to her glass as she continued speaking. “Before de Manhattan I agreed to do a covert mission for Intell. Never done anyt’ing like dat before. But… it went badly Luke and I got caught. And I was a prisoner of the Tal Shiar for nine month. Wasn’t till after I escaped dat I understood that what they had been doing to me was some sort of experiment. They used my brain like a hard drive. Sooooo much information. It’s there, but I can’t access it on purpose.”

He listened intently, she wasn’t the only one good at taking in information, his eyes dropped for a moment before then realising perhaps she didn’t need or want sympathy and instead wanted someone who understood. “I, fortunately, haven’t had to deal with them directly at least not to my knowledge but during the fall out of the Dominion war we fought with both the Romulans and the Marquis, we knew how bad they treated their prisoners when we stumbled across a POW camp” He sipped his drink again. “I’m sorry you had to endure that>”

She nodded and then drained the rest of her glass.

“You’ve read my file, you know how my ex-wife died and yet you mentioned your participation within the Marquis.” He eyed her now over the top of his drink.

Faye nodded slowly and looked up at him. “I was fifteen, Luke. My parents built a life on our colony and then fought to defend it. Like I said, everyone ‘as regrets. But.. I don’t regret fightin’. ‘Cause I did fight at times. Not a lot, but I helped my parents, or at least my dad with tech stuff. My mom disappeared when I was thirteen. She wasn’t dere when the Dominion came. I’m sorry our fight caused her death, but I can’t and won’t take responsibility for every hurt everyone else experienced at the hands of a group that numbered on the thousands. It’s not fair,” she said adamantly. She was tired of being blamed for stuff she couldn’t have done anything about. And while she had regrets, to this day defending her home in the way she could was not one of them.

“I never said I was blaming you for anything, everyone has their differences some worst than others. I have my own fair share of things I’m not proud off too” He leaned back placing his free right hand on the top of the sofa and began to take in the bare room, “Were rather alike, perhaps more than we would care to admit., and that is a scary notion for either of us to consider.”

Calloway chuckled. “Besides, as everyone who hates us is ‘appy to remind us, we got ours well and good when the Cardassians joined the Dominion. Don’cha worry Luke, we paid for our resistance…” she said with a bitter laugh. All these years later the memory of the bodies scattered all over their settlement was etched vividly in her mind.

His gaze fell back to Faye, there really wasn’t much else to look at in a room so stark. “And we paid our dues too.” He raised his glass, “To shattered memories and damaged pasts” He took a longing gulp before settling again. “You know this stuff’s illegal right? Even out here in the Delta Quadrant” He joked shaking his head, “Im going to regret this in the morning, well later on really.” He paused then thought about his words, “The drinking not talking to you of course, I’ve…” He paused again and decided what the heck, a little liquid courage inside of him. “I’ve enjoyed talking to you.”
