Everything froze- except for the slight drop in her jaw. Faye forced herself to breathe but it came out as a sharp inhale. Hands folded in her lap, they shook and she had to fight to keep some semblance of her composure. “Alive,” she whispered. That sorry excuse for a person they had captured had told her he was, but she hadn’t believed it. It seemed… incongruous with what else she had known. “Is… is he okay?”
For her part, while desperately relieved, Shara kept quiet, her attention partly on Faye to monitor how she was doing.

Cochrane watched Faye as he spoke. “Well… he is alive. And he will be okay, but he was definitely put through it. From the report from the Field Agent, Strickland had been tortured for an extended period. Intel garnered from the site indicated they were after something, but he didn’t give it up. Strong one, that guy. He is currently undergoing surgery and rehab on a medical ship that will be bring him to the Event Horizon.”
Ah hell! Whatever reserve of composure Faye had evaporated as Alex spoke. Tears slipped down her face. Event Horizon. He’d be close by soon then. But she processed what the CO said and shook her head. Tortured for an extended time. “They had to have switched in the fake just after I was given this assignment.”
Shara nodded. “The timeline does seem to fit,” she said softly.
Cochrane paused and looked at both women. “Look… because of the nature of this… well… fiasco is really not the choice word for this… I had to go outside Star Fleet and call in a favor. That favor comes with another layer of complications, as most do. I just want you both to know that going forward. Okay?”

For her part, Shara just gave a half-shrug. “Life’s complicated…”
But Faye wasn’t so nonchalant. Rising to her feet, she began to pace slightly. “It’s all so wrong!” she muttered under her breath.
Shara’s expression sank. “Faye… this is not your fault.”
Spinning, Faye stopped and pointed a finger at her mother. “No! you don’t get to sit there and say that. This is because of me. And you can spin it anyway you want, but that is the truth. He deserves soooo much better than that. I was supposed to have his back just like he always had mine!”
