Reaching for the water, she took another sip before she once again poured herself a little more whiskey. She was still drinking but with a bit of sense. Such as it was. She shook her head before taking a sip. “Not early on. It was really great. I loved dat place. There was so much freedom to explore. Try stuff. Buh when it did change, it was hard. We were fighting fer our lives, even if others fel’ we were on de wrong side.” She shrugged.

“Starfleet d’ough. More complicated. I… think I would have left Tracken evenshually. Pretty, but boring.” Faye smirked. “I learn t’ings too quickly. ‘Ave to keep pushin’ ahead, learnin’ new things. After some years of bein’ aimless, I knew I needed, I dunno, structure. Discipline, even. And…” Her voice dropped a bit and she sipped her drink some more. “I suppose it was a way to make amends, in a way.”

“A better and worthier reason than most, when I joined people just wanted a bit of the action, the federation hadn’t faced war and it brought the good and the bad out in people.” He shifted his weight, “Are you going to be staying long? Or is your next assignment around the corner?” He wasn’t sure why he wanted to know, perhaps he didn’t want to invest time on someone who was going to leave so quickly, he also wanted to know if she’d be trying to track down her real handler but knew that to be a far more sensitive and recent topic.

Well, that was the question, wasn’t it? But while everything had been turned upside down multiple times over and given a shake for good measure, there were certain things that were still true. Faye finished off the glass of whiskey and set it down on the coffee table with a clunk.

“Dis is my assignment, Luke.” She said his name as if it were a punctuation mark. It was fun to say! Luke. Luke. Luke. Faye smirked. “I’ll show you my work soon bu’ it needs me here to monider and adjust. Besides, here in de Delta Quadrant, you want me here in case big bad t’ings sow up.” Faye leaned in, her usually stormy eyes bright. “I’m dat good.” She patted his leg as she sat back up a bit. “Don’t worry, I’ll be ‘ere to piss you off another day.”

“Good, I wouldn’t want you running og before I had the chance to get to know you a bit better, and maybe throw you in the brig once or twice” He chuckled and finished his drink, “I think its time for you to go to bed, me too for that matter don’t want to give anyone the wrong impression and you have a date with the counsellor.” He stood up, wavering slightly before steadying himself, any objection at this stage would be futile, they were both drunk and Luke was way past his bed time. That and the way she was changing his opinion and view of her was beginning to scare him a little, Stockholm syndrome he thought, and he certainly felt like the captive here.

She had already slept for something like eleven hours. And sleep meant more troubled dreams. At least with the alcohol her mind shifted away from the constant chatter. And then he was here, and at least for a moment she felt calmer. Grounded. “Wrong impression?” she said, arching her brows and chuckling. “Most of the crew thinks I’m a traitor who deserves to be locked away. I don’ t’ink we’re tooooo worried about my reputation.”

“Yes well you did shot their command staff and have the ship on lockdown, but people can have other impressions of people.” Luke remained standing, she hadn’t asked him to leave and he didn’t just want to go.

Faye stood up, measuring her rate of rise so that she didn’t stumble and get dizzy. It meant that as she stood she could lift her gaze to meet his slowly. He was only a hand width’s away from her. “Go… if you want to. But you don’t have to.”

Her closeness was foreign to him, and her words were somewhat of a conundrum to him. Just when he thought he had figured her out she’d throw a spanner in the works and leave him drooling in a pit of his own confusion. “I don’t want to go” he said finally, his breath laboured somewhat from the alcohol and the current standing arrangements. “I just figured, the time and the drinking, I don’t want to overstay my welcome”
