The Counselor nodded. “I’m sure we can work with that. I will respect the boundaries you set as far as classified information, Cmdr. For today’s plan, I will let Faye get some rest because she certainly needs it, but I will make her my number one priority tomorrow.”

“If there comes a time when operational security is an obstacle for either of you, please tell me. I may have some favors I can use to facilitate even a small bit of consideration. Understood?” and his eyes moved between the Counselor and Calloway.

“Understood, Captain.”

Shara snorted, but there was a smile that slipped onto her face. “I’m treating this whole thing like a covert mission, Captain. And sometimes on a covert mission you have to take a certain amount of the operational latitude you’re given to make decisions on the fly. Not everyone gets that, but after all my years of service I do.” She wavered her head slightly. “I think between all of us we’ll find our way around any of the tighter spots we may find ourselves in.”

“Good.” Alex replied with a single and definitive nod of his head. “I expect to be kept in the loop as much as is allowed, Counselor. Thank you, both. Dismissed.”

Shara gave a crisp nod, glad they were all on the same page.

Slipping out into the corridor, she waited for Rollo to exit and fell in step to walk with her. “So… how do you want to handle this?” she asked, thinking a check-in rotation would be good, but not wanting to overstep, even if it was her daughter.

“If we were at a medical facility, it would be easy. There would be round the clock eyes on her, but I think she’s been through enough of being under a microscope the last few days.” They continued to walk while Rollo thought about it. “Your situation with Faye is very unique. I’m sure she has feelings of abandonment for the years you weren’t around, but you said you’ve touched on that already?” Blue-grey eyes looked over at the Cmdr.

“I don’t want her to feel like we’re all pouncing on her because we’re afraid she’s going to screw up or lose it, but it is important to find ways to see her frequently over the next few days.”

“I told you I wouldn’t meet with her until tomorrow in the hopes that she’s getting some rest, but I would like your input here. What do you think she would respond the best to—one on one time with me, or time with the two of you where I’m there as a sounding board?”

—Rollo, CNS
